Drafted nowhere in the vicinity of #1 overall.......AND it was 30 years ago.

I'm not arguing that at all.
He signed Stanton for the rookie to lean on, but I can guarantee you Dorsey didn't have 3rd string in mind for Mayfield once the season is here....May mini-camp depth chart doesn't mean squat...
Maybe Dorsey just wanted a competent QB room from top to bottom. Not that far fetched of a notion......And I never said the Browns plan was to play Mayfield ASAP...I said Mayfield was going to alter the plans. There's a big difference....And I said it like five different times. People only hear what they wanna hear.

And I respond in kind to your responses. I get what you're saying. Not trying to get pissy with you. You and I just see different versions of this. To each their own.

Edit: I'm just not buying into the whole Mayfield as the instant savior thing. I've been burned too many times before with every new QB we've all fawned and drooled over. This time, I'll take the more cautious approach and hedge my bets. If Mayfield surprises me, I'm more than ready to embrace that. In the mean time, I'll watch him grow and get better.

  5. Flacco is a lot better than Jackson...he now has legit WRs on his team....I’m expecting Balt and Pitt to achieve 10 wins this year w a healthy season but we know that’s not happening....I should say w/out key injuries

  6. People think Mayfield is the best thing since sliced bread....repeat watch the Georgia game from 2Q on when they made adjustments and he had no answers...that was college ball

Dorsey signing Stanton gives him flexibility in August. Seems like every year a QB goes down in preseason. He could flip Tyrod for a couple 2nds never having paid him a dime.

  8. What? Lol...I think they learned from their mistake last year not to go into a season w a horrible backup(Kessler) and a rookie

Lets just say the majority of Browns fans are skeptical on the QB front. More of a "lets cross our fingers and hold our breath and hope and pray" vibe than anything else. I guess that's normal considering the last 20 years of complete dysfunction, but still sad none the less....We just spent the #1 pick of the draft on a highly decorated and productive college QB prospect, but most just seem to be hoping that we got a QB that maybe in the next three years (with proper coaching) could possibly develope into a starting NFL QB. The notion that we could have picked a great quarterback, or even just a guy that is actually better than the likes of Tyrod Taylor is generally met with doubt it seems...What can ya do? It's been that bad here. I've never seen fans more willing to bench the #1 pick...You'd think Taylor had a couple rings, the mad respect he gets...But I think it has much more to do with our own track record drafting QB's. It's just natural I guess for people to assume we messed up the draft...

On the other hand Taylor "is" a proven NFL QB, and Mayfield hasn't been benched. It's simply a rational approach to the season. If he can "take" the position, yeah! If he takes 8 games to achieve that, also Yeah! When he's ready and able to match / outplay Taylor, I'm sure he will get the ball.

I hope he then holds it for a long long time.

I along with the masses understand what you are saying TD, I'm not trying to argue that it could/won't happen. What I was trying to reiterate is that there are a lot of QBs that we're able to sit and learn, them went on to have great careers, that's all.

How many of the #1 picks that were forced into the lineup year one..ALSO... Was drafted to a team that signed/traded for a QB who had recently led their previous team to the playoffs?

We all, myself included, talk at length about Mayfield walking on to Oklahoma and winning the starting job immediately....BUT, he had a year to get acclimated to Oklahoma in between... Much like he has that opportunity here.

Again, if he is clearly getting ebeverythi about the pro game down and passes Tyrod, I will not be angry...I just want the kid to have the best opportunity for success.

Benched probably wasn't the right word, but if a guy is kept out of the starting line-up, what would you like to call it?
    yeah. (?)
Ok...I personally feel, that he will take over sooner. If it takes eight games into the season, it'll be cause for concern in my book. Unless , as I've said several times, that Tyrod Taylor is winning football games. If Taylor plays winning football, by all means, let the rook "learn" on the bench....
Of course the Browns are doing and saying the right things. The "rational" approach is the way they should handle it..Sometimes talent just can't be denied, would you not agree?

For the last time. I'm not suggesting the Browns rush the young QB into the line-up....Is it really that hard to understand the concept that the #1 pick of the draft could ascend quickly and take over the QB duties of the Cleveland Browns? You say Taylor is a proven NFL QB, and I agree, but the fact remains that his own team tried to replace him with Nathan Peterman last season. Let's not get carried away. Tyrod is a helluva step up from anything we had last year, but he's not a superstsar. If he was, he wouldn't have been traded for a 3rd rd pick, right? The Browns have Taylor on a one year deal. He's a place-holder....Baker Mayfield is our future, and it's okay for fans to acknowledge the possibility that the former Heisman winning #1 overall draft pick COULD take over as QB of the Browns quicker than "planned"...

I've been a die-hard NFL fan all my life Irish...Of course I'm aware of this. And there has also been cases where the young QB ascends quickly and comfortably into the starting line-up much sooner than anticipated, simply because it was clear that his talent couldn't be denied and he truly gave the team the best chance to win...

I'm not insinuating the Browns rush things in any way....I'm insinuating that Mayfield is the much more talented player, and it's only a matter of time. Most fans here seem to believe Taylor can hold him off and keep Mayfield on the sidelines his rookie season. Or at least until the bye... I just don't believe it'll play out like that....I think Mayfield will own that locker-room in short order, and he will take over much sooner...

Don't count #6 out for week one.... just sayin.

And if Taylor proves me wrong and we don't see Mayfield much this year, that'll mean we are winning games...So it's all good. It doesn't even compare to the nightmare QB situation Sashi had us in last year, I think we can all agree on that.

Here's the kicker. Tyrod Taylor has NEVER had this much talent around him. He absolutely COULD elevate his game to a level we haven't seen before, and that would be awesome. Ideal, as many have pointed out. This is a big money year for Taylor, and if the Browns have improved the roster to playoff contender status (which I believe they have), then I might be completely under selling Tyrod Taylor's ability to hold down starting job in Cleveland, and keep Mayfield at bay. We'll see......I admit that it was stupid of the Bills to bench him for Peterman, but that just speaks to the way today's NFL is. And to why I think we'll see Mayfield sooner than later..

I'm very confident that the Browns got it right finally by selecting Mayfield....And I'm also happy to admit that Tyrod could present more of a challenge than I'm giving him credit for. It's really just about winning football games as far as I'm concerned. If chemistry developes quickly and these Browns start winning, I don't care if it's Brogan Roback throwing to Damion Ratley...Just win.

I think you are taking things personally and not really understanding what the majority of Browns fans are feeling/thinking. I, for one, am not arguing with you about Baker Mayfield's skill set. I think I have championed him almost as much as SAS has...I will give that crown to Sam, but I have been in Baker's corner since last November. It isn't that I am crossing my fingers and holding my breath while praying, I have every confidence that Baker Mayfield is the future of this franchise, finally! All I am saying is that it doesn't have to be a crash course in learning the professional game, getting acclimated to a new city, learning a new playbook/new coaches/new teammates. He has the luxury of working WITH Tyrod Taylor this season and improving his entire skill set, while learning EVERY aspect of the playbook and getting settled in to his new environment. There is no hurry for him to step on the field as a starter...Now 2019, he better damn well be ready and I believe he absolutely will be if they take this approach.

Let me say this one last time...I BELIEVE they drafted a GREAT QB. I BELIEVE he will be the starting QB for the Browns for as long as they can afford to pay him without sacrificing the team...my hope is that he is in the same mold of a Tom Brady and understands he needs players around him and that he will get paid, but not to the detriment of his supporting cast...if that happens, I BELIEVE he will be the starting QB for the next 15 years.

I don't doubt in any way shape or form that Baker Mayfield isn't better than Tyrod Taylor, if I did, I would be hoping and praying that the Browns sign Tyrod to an extension..I'm not and don't really care if they do. They used a 3rd round pick on him for one reason and one reason only, John Dorsey understands the importance of having a VETERAN QB in the lineup every Sunday. Tyrod was brought in and used a valuable commodity in a third round pick, to start 16 games for the Cleveland Browns. That way in 2019, the Browns will have another VETERAN ready to start the first game of 2019 in Baker Mayfield.

That is my two cents, I am not arguing with you. I don't even doubt Baker will pass Tyrod this season, maybe even before game one of the season...however, I also believe he can work a lot of shit out, sitting behind Tyrod for one season, no risk of injury, no pressure to win in order for a coaching staff to keep their jobs, no pressure to get other first and second year players also on the same page as this young roster is asking for. Tyrod has been there and done that, he knows what is being asked and needed to be ready for the start of an NFL season, these are the things Baker can learn year one...then he won't have to teach himself those little nuances.

  16. You said the same thing about Kizer....you may get it right eventually, but not w Mayfield....your talking about a QB in Taylor who went 17-37 for 134 yds in a playoff game vs Jax and scored 3 pts....Kizer on the other hand vs the same team went 16-32 for 179 yds and a 1 TD in his 9th game...Tyrod very overrated and Mayfield isnt even close to ready

    *You're

Buffalo lost the game 10-3... it's not like they were blown out. Jacksonville was the league's best defense.

    And four turnovers.

And the Browns lost the game 19-7 and it would have been 12-7 had Kizer not fumbled (again) and had it returned for a touchdown from his own eight.

So Buffalo (as a team) gave the ball away twice and lost by seven points. Cleveland (as a team) gave the ball away five times (four by its quarterback) and lost by 12 (and really just 5 since the final score came as time expired).

I'm reading that as Cleveland was either better coached (hugely doubtful) or was more talented (outside of quarterback) than Buffalo... a team that went 9-7 and made the playoffs. Buffalo got objectively worse by trading away Taylor, signing McCarron and trading up to draft Josh Allen (not to mention obviously wasting a pick on Peterman in 2017). Cleveland got better in every way.

Sounds to me like 9-7 may be the floor and not the ceiling, based on what you're giving us here.

Actually, I said Kizer needed two years to get his shit straight and he went in game 1...WTF are you smoking coming in here and saying that? I do think had the Browns had a starter the caliber of Tyrod, DeShone could/will develop into a starting caliber QB. That hasn't changed the absolute best thing for his career happened this off season. Kizer couldn't be in a better situation, than in Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers.

There you go again, taking a single game and defining a career...well, not a single game in Mayfield's case, it was actually 2 1/2 quarters you used to define his college career...that was very thoughtful of you.

Since you want to continue to rack this up as knowledge instead of what it really is...

If a team beats Tom Brady and he can't figure out their defense for a half of football, does that mean that team has him figured out and he will never again play well against that team as long as they have the same personnel?

Tom Brady's New England Patriots lose football games, and Tom Brady has bad halves, sometimes full, football games. Would you take those bad games and throw it in his face when deciding if he had a great career and whether or not he belongs in the HOF?

Baker Mayfield had a College Football Hall Of Fame career at Oklahoma, let it go stopper, you are wrong in this instance...let it go...
