G.O.A.T. arguments are always fun and sometimes heated. Instead of arguing GOAT here though post the best you have seen at a position. It doesnt have to be in person can just be who you watched on TV though if you did get to see them in person how did they do on that particular day or if you saw them multiple times what day was the best. Of course this is even more opinion driven than GOAT but it should still be some fun to see who people list as the best they have seen. Now of course the older you are and the longer you have been a fan the more players you will have to pick from, but that doesn't mean that younger fans voices on who the best they have seen shouldnt count. If you have only been watching for the last 10 years or so you might toss out Julio Jones or Antonio Brown as the best ever and that is perfectly fine older fans dont need to berate them and say are you crazy they dont hold a candle to player X. Alright here are some of mine QB: Joe Montana RB: Barry Sanders WR: Im still going with Rice here though I might very soon argue Brown.
QB: John Elway (I was born in 1989 and only really got to watch him when he was good, after all you older folks got that overrated bias in place for him). During that span I actually saw him I'd have him ahead of the greats that played recently including Brady, Manning, Brees, etc. Maybe if I was a bit older I'd have Young or Montana. RB: Terrell Davis but if you want some longevity give me Ladainian Tomlinson. WR: I missed Rice's prime. So I'd have to say it's probably Randy Moss edging out Marvin Harrison. T.O., Julio and Brown are right there. The thing hurting Julio is his lack of TDs. I've watched enough to think it's the scheme and coaching but he's gotta get some soon or Brown could leave him in his dust.
I'll think on the rest, but as for running back I'm going with Marshall Faulk. First running back that I witnessed that was a factor to take it to the house in any situation and had the most well rounded game I have seen from a rusher. He's the standard by which I measure other running backs. Both his 2000 and 2001 seasons were just unbelievable to watch.
Barry Sanders was amazing and did nearly everything himself. He should be the All-Time NFL rushing leader. Eric Dickerson was great when he was great. Walter Payton. Faulk was awesome too. Would love to include Emmitt, but nearly anyone could’ve had a somewhat productive RB career behind that Dallas line. QB? Brady. Fuck me for saying it. WR? Rice/Moss TE? Gonzo I’ll have to ponder the rest...
Too bad you guys aren't old enough to have seen Jim Brown. Some of the more recent RB's were able to do some things better than Brown, but NONE of them did everything as well as Jim Brown.
QBs Montana, RBs OJ Simpson WR JuJu Schuster Smith That block on Vontaze Burfict was a thing of beauty, even though he was suspended that taunting he did was priceless.
Lets give this a whirl: QB: Definitely more for his regular season success than his post season, I'd have to go Peyton Manning. I thought about Dan Marino, but I only really watched the last half of his career. That was still good, but Manning took it to another level. Just the way he studied the game, didn't matter how a team lined up he would put his team into a position to be successful. Those chess matches between Manning and Ray Lewis were fun to watch. True his numbers weren't great in the post-season, but still he changed the position imo. Also a shoutout to Kurt Warner, he was fun to watch too. RB: This one is tough too, I'm going to say Barry Sanders though, even though I only saw a few years at the end of his career. He was the offense for the Detroit Lions, and he made the craziest runs look easy. Sometimes it looked like backyard football, just get the ball to Barry and get out of his way. Some of those exciting runs only generated a few yards but dang it was fun to watch. If Le'Veon Bell had a bit more speed, I'd argue for him because of his versatility. I personally think he's better than Faulk (might be the homer in me) and he would have more TDs if he had more breakaway speed. WR: Randy Moss. May have been a world class a**hole but man could he play when he wanted to. Didn't matter how you covered him, he could have 4 guys on him and he'd make it look easy outjumping all of them for the catch. Not only did he have the vertical speed to beat people down the field, he also had good change of direction to take short passes long distances. Rice was the harder worker, and the more complete receiver and ultimately the greatest receiver of all time, but Moss was the best and most exciting receiver I have seen. Another favorite of mine to watch was Moss' teammate Cris Carter. One of the greatest sideline catchers ever, and a lot of fun to watch. TE: Tony Gonzales. Without a doubt in my mind, the best pass catching TE ever. Don't get me wrong, Antonio Gates is not far behind, but much of Gonzo's career was played before the league went completely pass crazy and he still put up damn good numbers. He could line up inline and spread out, and much like Gronkowski today he'd win jump balls over the LBs and safeties. Also had some of the softest hands in the league, extremely rare for him to drop a pass that hit him in the hands, and he did not always have a great QB. Trent Green was probably the best QB he ever played with.
Loved watching Hines, probably my favorite Steelers receiver to watch, but not the best ever. Not even the best Steelers receiver I've seen.
QB- Hmmm this is hard TOM BRADY- Most of you guys are fucked in the head. RB- Sweetness was the best I"ve seen. Barry was dam good too. WR- Rice, for a lot of the reasons that make Brady great. Hardest working man at his position. Rand Moss was the most physically gifted. TE- Come on now. Gronk is the most dominating TE ever. Gonzo was good and a hard worker but he wasn't the beast Gronk is.
Give him time, only his second year Honestly I hope thats the last time I see him stand over someone like he did. I was fine with the hit, not with the taunting. Likely an ejection if it happens this year. Probably wouldn't have liked the hit as much if it was against someone other than Burfict either...
Sorry, I couldn't bring myself to type Brady...The Spygate and Deflategate are enough for me to justify not putting him as the best. My list, my rules lol As for TE, if Gronk continues to play he should overcome Gonzo. But with all that retirement talk (which is probably just talk) its not guaranteed at this point.
Well, I'm not going to drag that argument up again, if you haven't changed your view on that by now I doubt you will. Maybe when he has a passer rating of 128.7 and MVP in Super Bowl 55, probably not though which is unfortunate. Let's just say looking at the stats and continued winning on big stages, I feel you logic is flawed.
You saw and comprehended what you were watching while OJ was still in his heyday? Dam dude you're right behind Lyman in the AARP line.
I never saw Brown other then tapes and I know he was the dominating force of his era. However, I would put Walter Paytons all around game vs him. He could run, catch, block, return, pass and punt. There was nothing on the offensive side of the ball he didn't do exceptionally well.
Look, the controversies definitely hurt him in my eyes. That being said I do recognize him as the GOAT and the only argument that Montana has is he never lost a Super Bowl. He also didn't make it to 8 of them. And early in his run he won with nobodies at WR. Honestly I just don't like him, probably because he beats the crap out of the Steelers whenever they play and most of the games aren't close.
After thinking about it some, I'm going to take Warren Moon as my quarterback. My first thoughts on it were leaning towards either Montana or Brady, but Warren has long been one of my favorites. Put him in either Brady or Montana's situation and he would have put up Tecmo Bowl numbers every Sunday. Yep, I went there.
