Big leap from 0-16, sure... but aside from Hue Jackson (who couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag) and Greggggg Williams (who's coverage is softer than butter outside on a 90 degree day), no one thought this was an 0-16 roster. Browns should have been on the W side about 4-5 times last season with the worst quarterback in their franchise's history and only a handful of games from their most talented offensive player (Gordon). A jump from 5-11* to 9-7 would be just about right for the influx of talent (Taylor, Landry, Hyde, Carrie, and the rookie class) brings. Not to mention the growth from the Year 1 and Year 2 guys entering their second- and third-seasons, respectively. Add a dash of competency at the offensive coordinator spot and now this team is held back only by how quickly they come together and how their vaunted defensive coordinator decides to handle the year. More of that 6-8 yards off man crap with an "Angel" deep and I'll turn 9-7 into a hard-fought 4-12 real quick.
Shotgun, no huddle, play-action with short routes to get the ball out of the quarterback's hands quickly, a mix bag of RBs with different skill sets and some inventive play calling to revive Warner's career while keeping him clean. It's the type of offense that works towards Baker's skill set and away from possible deficiencies.
Here's a little more flavor on 9-7*. Week 1 (PIT): Win. The Browns narrowly lost on a last second fluke pass after spotting them seven points on the opening drive with the blocked punt in 2017. They get the Steelers again in Week 1 for a team that notoriously sleep-walks through the preseason. Week 2 (@NOR): Loss. One of the best teams in the NFL - too much firepower for a young defense. Way too much firepower for Greggggg Williams. Week 3 (NYJ): Win. Probably too early for Sam Darnold's first start, but they almost beat McCown last year despite two redzone turnovers by Kizer (and another INT by Hogan). Week 4 (@OAK): Win. If Jon Gruden's early handling is any indication, this team could be drafting Nick Bosa #1 overall next season. Browns by a field goal. Week 5 (BAL): Win. This team is garbage. We should have beat them last season twice. Turnover differential in those two games for the Browns? -7. Tyrod fixes that. Week 6 (LAC): Loss. Good team we can't beat unless Jamie Meder blocks a field goal on Christmas Eve. Week 7 (@TAM): Win. Team that looks great on paper, but who's QB is struggling and who's head coach is over-matched (and probably on the hot seat). Week 8 (@PIT): Loss. No way we beat the class of the AFCN twice. Week 9 (KAN): Win. Lost some great talent - and good talent evaluators. We'll have to see if Mahomes can carry the team. Week 10 (ATL): Loss. Too many weapons to defend. Week 12 (@CIN): Loss. Tempted to give this the win since we're coming out of the BYE, but I'm sticking with my home and home win splits for these. Week 13 (@HOU): Loss. Deshaun Watson for MVP? In reality, this is a team who's defense's window may be closing and needs to really make that push now. Week 14 (CAR): Loss. As long as team has Cam Newton on it, I'm not confident in beating them. Drops the Browns to 6-7 on the season and with four losses in a row... Week 15 (@DEN): Win. Baker Mayfield gets his first NFL start. Promptly beats the tar out of the Broncos who were also rumored to be in love with him. Week 16 (CIN): Win. Baker Mayfield gets his first NFL home win. Beats Cincinnati in a major blow out, winning offensive rookie of the week. Week 17 (@BAL): Win. Baker Mayfield versus Lamar Jackson with QB1 notching victory #3. Week 18 (@TBD): Win. Baker Mayfield gets his first NFL post-season win with the Browns as wild card #6. Week 19 (@NWE): Loss. Cinderella Mayfield ends against Tom Brady's last Super Bowl run. Mayfield out-duels Brady by a big margin but the defense lets up at the end to give the Pats the victory.
Again, no other team got better but the Browns....Hyde and Crowell are a wash and please w the nobody expected this team to be 0-16.....they were expected to be picking 1-3 and I think their over/under was 4.5 so its not like people all over the US were surprised they went 0-16 or the NYJ to be 0-16 etc....how many wins does Vegas have this yr? You should be a millionare w your prediction...put your $ where your mouth is my man
Wait...this is exactly why Ben and Haley didnt get along....Ben wanted a no huddle offense spreading teams out.....who knows
Perhaps Haley didn't trust Ben to run it the same way he did Warner? I don't think Roethlisberger is going to be receiving an invitation to join the 'Deep Thinkers' club.
65.9% of snaps from shotgun. Roethsliberger's 2017 - 90.9% Taylor's 2017 - 71.0% Maybe - and this may seem crazy - but just maybe the offensive coordinator who doesn't have a problem with his QB in shotgun all the time gives his QBs (who thrive from shotgun) a chance to play there and play to their strengths? (Not directed to you, @Tim... but rather he-who-shall-remain-blocked.)
Ok, but what does that have to do with Warner, Taylor, Mayfield and Haley? Because we don't know what the dynamic was with Todd and Ben other than that they didn't like each other.
I dont think the Browns will be running a no huddle offense....he wouldnt do it w Ben but now he will w a far less passer or a rookie???
Ok, remove the no huddle aspect if it makes you happy but my point remains.
Works just as well for Taylor, too. Also, I'll assume that was a typo, @Tim. Baker has no deficiencies.
