LOL, th HOF also thinks Joe Namath should be in. And I am far from the only one who knows Elway was a product of merely good skills and overhype.

Sure some of that could have been Elway or it could have also been the fact that the rest of his team was exposed as the frauds that they were. Come on h e had guys like Vance Johnson, Sammy Winder, Gerald Willhite, Clarence kay, Mark Jackson, and Ricky Nattiel to name a few. Hell even Tom Brady would have a hard time making those guys look good and getting to a Super Bowl.

Also lets see in his first SB loss Phil Simms had a passer rating of 150.9 competed 88% percent of his passes (Both Super Bowl Records) and had what is arguably the best SB game ever by a QB but its Elways fault the Broncos lost (BTW Elway was 22 of 37 with 304 yards in the loss)

In his second Super Bowl he had the Broncos off to 10-0 lead after the first quarter only to have the redskins score 35 points in the second quarter (only 7 of those points came off of an Elway turnover) again I suppose its Elways fault because his D turned into a wet paper bag.

In his 3rd Super Bowl he lost to the GOAT nuff said.

Again look at the guys he had to work with on Offense just a good overrated QB is not getting those teams to the Super Bowl.

So Marino, Favre, Roethlisberger, Brady and Manning are not great because they have all lost Super Bowls so they are just Good qbs?
While Johnson, Dilfer, Plunkett and Flacco must be great because they have not lost a Super Bowl?

Oh and by the way, I didn't say LAOJoe doesn't know football, I said anyone who does know football, knows Davis won Elway his SBs. I don't see where he contradicted that, so to conclude I said Joe doesn't know football based on that is specious at best.

And "5 SB appearences" please, the reason Alexander the Great was "the Great" was because he didn't lose. We don't talk about generals who were in the most battles and lost.

LOL, I love when people try to truck out the "all Elway had was has-beens" tack, ignoring the fact that that cast was good enough to get them to the SB before Elway choked them away with interceptions.

I like when people want to play well they were good enough to get Elway there card

1st question, No, it doesn't fully extinguish any greatness, but it does make them ineligible for GOAT. The Greatest of All Time doesn't lose on the biggest stage of all of football.

2nd question: why does everyone always trot out the 1 hit wonders, like it's some sort of "a-ha" argument clincher? It isn't. It's not just about no losing, but multiple winning, and yes Plunkett was greater than Elway, Jim didn't lose multiple times on the biggest stage.

    So, you like truth?
Because if you can't understand why the rest of his teams performance in all the games of the regular season and the playoffs as being good enough vs 1 game proving them not is equivalent in argument, then you have bigger problems with understanding scale and magnitude.

the greatest of all time has lost on the biggest stage, 3 times to be precise. he's also won 5x.
how is playing like crap early in the playoffs and losing possibly better than getting to the SB and losing?

  9. NFL-Solomon Franchise Player Steelers

Sorry, your guy is ineligible, ineligible multiple times.

Still a great, with a small "g" QB, tho.

How is it better? In terms of Greatness.
Greatness is as much about perception as the stats, and Great doesn't lose on the biggest stage.

still didnt answer my question, how can losing earlier in the playoff, or not even making the playoffs be more impressive than losing in the SB?

  12. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

i dont completely disagree I just think people are romanticizing Montana because it was so long ago and they dont want to admit what is so clearly in front of them. i get hating Brady and the Patriots but my perception is that its not even a conversation.

in 85-87 Joe Montana played in 3 playoff games, lost them all and threw 0 TDs.
Tom Brady has never had such a weak run and his career is 1.5x the size of Montana's.
immediately after Montana leaves the 49ers winning more SBs probably doesnt help his cause either.

ya he got ousted earlier. your perception of great and mine are obviously different. Id rather Brady lose a SB to Philly while throwing for 500 than lose in the 1st round multiple times over consecutively while barfing on his shoes.

I adhere to the idea of Greatness like what gave Alexander of Macedonia his moniker, you don't lose on the big stage.
Now I understand if you don't take non statistical perception by the masses into account, but it IS what mist people have always done throughout time when talking great, from very good.

  17. NFL-Solomon Franchise Player Steelers

Yeah, but it isn't anyone else's M.O. I'm just making a point that I'm being a good boy.

  18. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

if Alexander was anything like Joe Montana he wouldve died on his way to battle....... while barfing on his shoes.
