I do agree there. I don't necessarily agree that it's the right pick, but it's certainly who they wanted.
Here's Hurst's highlites. This is not sexy, but far from boring. My thoughts: Very athletic for a TE. Maybe they call him a WR/TE and split him wide. He's 6-5/250. He runs like Jeremy Shockey and receives like Gronk. But we know what toll their styles took on them. Maxx Williams was a bit of the same thing and he's already damaged goods. I kind of felt that Goedert or Gesicki in the 2nd would've been better with a WR or OL in the first would've been better for the team.
How long before the Ravens turn pass catching Hurst into a blocking TE like they did Williams and Gillmore?
What a huge GET to nab Lamar Jackson with the last pick here, gave up this years 2nd, and 4th and 2019 2nd rounder to go get him. Joe Flacco's time is definitely almost over after this year imo. He will be forced to take a huge paycut if he plays like crap again this year or he will be gone. In order to move up, the Ravens sent their 52nd, 125th picks and a 2019 second-round selection to Philadelphia in exchange for the 32nd and 132nd selections in 2018.
This is a huge let down imo. Moving on from Joe right now does not make sense since they won;t be able to get off "cheap" dead money until 2020 and that's an $8M hit.
Joe can't go anywhere this season. This is about the 2019 season when Joe's contract is set up where he either restructures or they can take a reasonable cap hit and release. Marty's offense is west-coast style. We all know that Joe's strength is throwing downfield but the offense is dink and dunk and rewards a mobile QB more than a pocket guy. So this is definitely set up for him to take a big paycut or he is gone. I see that coming.
If Jackson is their guy and who them envision building the team around, they they needed to get him. Dead money is irrelevant when the replacement is a rookie. Just look at it all as the total cost for a QB on the team which I'm sure will still be less than Flacco's hit straight up. I'm mostly curious to see if Flacco has anything in the tank to remotivate him to perform at a high level.
So no need to watch tomorrow night for a while (not sure if they do the 3rd round with the 2nd or not), no Ravens pick in the 2nd. However they do have the first pick in the 3rd Thanks Buffalo.
I don't see it. First, teams don't bring in OCs over franchise QBs especially not the likes of Mornhiweg. He's no Kubiak and even then he made it work for Joe. Joe can benefit from dinking and dunking to set up the long ball. Problem was OL and dead handed receivers. Second, they could've asked Joe for a pay cut without wasting all those picks on a back up. Because Jackson is only going to be that for the next 2 seasons and you can tell by his expression that he knows it. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. This just screams desperation. I'd like to change our motto to "In Ozzie We RUST." This just screwed DeCosta a bit to start as GM for next year.
You really can't touch Joe's contract this year. It is just not set up to do it that way, however 2019 is when you can go in and restructure and lower cap hits, if they so desire to do so. The fact of the matter is, Joe has underperformed since the Super Bowl season, we all know this. Yes, he had a decent year with Kubiak but he sucked ass last year and the year before that. You don't make a move like this and think that Lamar is going to sit as a backup for years. I just think Joe's time as a Raven will be over after this coming season. Joe's contract details for 2019 and 2020 Post June 1st release.... Age - Base Salary Prorated Cap number Dead Mon Cap Savings 2019- 34 -$18,500,000 - $8,000,000 - $26,500,000 - $8,000,000 - $18,500,000 2020-35- $20,250,000 - $8,000,000 - $28,250,000 - $8,000,000 - $20,250,000 So a cap savings of 18 million if cut as a post June 1st release. Yes that is happening unless he gets us a Super Bowl this year.
Not gonna argue Joe's performance. His accuracy hasn't been there, but there's more to it than just that. But they spent BIGLY to draft a hyper athletic kid with a big arm and running skills. He's RG3 and we already have RG3 - for a mere $1M!! Might as well have drafted Mason Rudolph on the 2nd and saved the picks. They spent big on him. Too big.
Part of me feels like I'm over reacting to this. I watch the kids highlights and he's electric. His stat line is gaudy. Then I think if he tries this shit in the NFL he'll be sitting right on the bench with crutches like RG or cracked ribs like Vick. Even Tyrod showed he'll get injured and Jackson plays like him. LJs type of play has always proven to be dangerous in the pros. Big rewards, but big risks. I like his fast feet and his short throwing arc like he's throwing darts. He still throws wobbly ducks on the long bomb tho'. Again, I'm not hating on the player, just the pick. Doesn't seem to fit and it cost too much imo.
I cant remember where but i did say earlier that i thought we would look at jackson because it made sense. We are a good fit for him, and the upside is fairly insane and the league is incredibly outdated, a guy like him can succeed and he has everything you need to help him do so. A traditionally great D, a legit LT, all pro guard on the line, plus good vetran WR's who are HANDS catchers, a solid RB ( may be the only weak link) and an established SB winning QB. Let jackson settle and come in slowly. I think ozzie just ended the first round how he started it ( NO IM NOT SAYING THEY ARE HOF PICKS) just that they are a double salvo in the first which are both very good imo. I have no clue where we will go in the third but this was a good day on balance off information held. who knows how any of these will turn out 2k
