Shut your pie hole, Tim! I'm trying to convince him to either trade down (and announce early) or to just take Chubb. :wall:

The only reason I disagree with you Tim is that Eli is 37 years old, notoriously the age for declining QBs not with a last naming starting with B. Eli falls into this category with his numbers declining two seasons in a row, even adding in an average game for the one missed in 2017. Eli is on his way out of the league, he has one more good season in that body and NOW may be the only time for them to add a high quality replacement, while giving that rookie a year to sit and learn. It couldn't be a better scenario for the G-Men.

He asked for someone to talk him off the ledge about Saquon.

He didn't ask for alternates. :)

    In that case . . .

AVOID SAQUAN BARKLEY LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! :OK:

I hope your right. I messed around with taking Barkley over the top QB. I can see the value in Barkley in a trade back scenario. Where I have trouble is the idea of passing on a QB this year to simply take a RB without getting anything extra out of the deal. Now there are rumors floating around that John Mara is pushing Barkley because he is committed to Eli. If Mara starts trying to make football decisions the Giants are headed down the road the Redskins and Cowboys live on. And I don't like that part of town.

    Okay. I'll regret this later, but . . .

Think of the best RB the Giants have had in the past 20 or so years. Then match those RB's to where the Giants finished the season.

Barkley is better than any RB on that list.

LOL thanks Tim. To me the biggest issue with actually taking Saquan isn't the player himself. It's the team mentality that goes along with it. It indicates they are selling out on hoping Eli can win another Super Bowl for them. Eli is the greatest Giants QB of all time. And while probably not a hall of famer has at times been an amazing player for the Giants. But he is 37 and frankly hasn't been all that good since about 2013. Giants fans talk about the supporting cast he had etc... and all that's well and good but you just don't see the "tough & fearless" Eli anymore. The guy doesn't seem to have control of the pocket anymore, feels pass rush when it isn't there and rushes to get rid of the ball even when he doesn't need to.

Putting all your eggs in the basket of a guy who is a shell of his former self is short sighted and indicates they are not worried about the long term health of the franchise but rather are worried about the media response to moving on from a past his prime passer. That doesn't sit well with me.

Tiki Barber never won a super bowl and he was the best RB the Giants had over the last 20 years. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw did as a RB by committee and were a nice pair of complimentary players.

The Giants historic success has come from pass rush and QB play. Not RB's. And this is even more important in the modern NFL.

Barkley has to be an all pro level talent as a rookie to be worth making a pick like this. Honestly taking him at #2 overall and watching the Jets take a franchise QB with the next pick -- I will be disappointed in this pick basically unless he puts on a gold jacket in Canton some day. I know that sounds stupid but that's just the reality of positional value.

Well I wish now that I had just stuck with my QB in the last mock. lol! I got sucked into the media hype on Darnold....

New theory I'm leaning towards....I'm still expecting the Giants to take Barkley at #2, and I think we will see a Browns tradedown at #4 with Buffalo. Browns will get #12, #22 and 3(1) (the pick we sent them for Taylor)....Then at #12, I think we could see Cleveland take OT Mike McGlinchey....Just a thought.

edit: If Giants pass on Barkley, I would expect the Browns to stay at #4 and select the RB.

  10. xinik Franchise Player Manager Giants

Yeah because you guys need more picks this year =P

McGlinchey's name appears to be rising. Would it have been worth it to pass on Chubb if McGlinchey isn't on the board at 12? I suppose you could always grab Williams if you have him as a LT.

The thing is...Once the Browns take Mayfield, somebody might move up for Darnold. I can just as easily see a scenario where Giants trade down. Maybe even just a slight trade down with Denver, so they can stay in the hunt for Chubb or Barkley...

^^In that case, the Browns stay at #4 and take Saquon...

I mean the other piece of information that has consistently come out of the Meadowlands is that Darnold is the Giants QB1. So if Baker really is the first pick the possibility exists the Giants take Darnold. I'm not opposed to holding the #2 pick for ransom if they are passing on a QB anyway though and trading back to Denver still works for me because you are picking up resources and still getting either Barkley or Chubb. I love Barkley or Chubb at 4 to the Browns. I just don't think the Giants have the liberty to make that move at 2. If they do I prefer Chubb to Barkley but I would rank it as:

    1) Draft a QB
    2) Trade back
    3) Draft someone other than Barkley or Nelson (Chubb, Edmunds, James etc...)
    4) Draft Barkley
    5) Draft Nelson

Also thanks to everyone for letting me vent. I feel much better about this now no matter how it shakes out.

NYG will take Barkley if he is there at 1.2.

Eli has some left in the tank and Barkley can extend Eli’s shelf life by a year or two (time to acquire and/or season a young QB).

Sony Michel, Derrius Guice, Chubb, Jones or Penny could do the same thing...

I would bet that there will be better QB prospects next year. Historically, only 2 or 3 of the top 5 QBs are likely to pan out VERY WELL. I still expect NYG to have a top-10 pick next year too. They will not make tremendous strides in 2018. Most of the G-men fans I’m talking to (I live in NYC) seem to be on board with my assessment.

So here is the problem with that. The Giants are doing everything they can to sell out for the next 2 years. If they have a top 10 pick again next year then the strategy is even dumber than it looks right now. You are not even considering a RB no matter who it is at 2 if you think you are still getting a top 10 pick next year. You are thinking about Barkley at 2 because you think he can make sure you don't have another top 10 pick and maybe even get your team in the playoffs.

NYG, in my opinion is further away from the playoffs than a Top-5 draft pick. Do they know this? Hell if I know. This is just an opinion and some of it (not all) is based on some discussions I’m having socially.

I am with you -- they are farther away than one year and I certainly hope they know it. I am just not sure they do. They do a lot of talking about how they won 11 games just one season ago and how young Eli looks for 37... After going 3-13 and canning a crap coach I think the fans are, by and large ready for a rebuild. But we want to see it done smartly not line ourselves up for a bunch of 6-10 to 9-7 seasons which is what I am fearing at the moment.

They used to have a top OLine and a run game. They made some bad draft decisions and then refused to admit them. Played guys out of position because they had to or away from where they hoped they'd play. The draft and inability to admit and address their failures properly hurt.

I would do whatever it takes to extend Eli’s shelf-life to gain more pieces to make another run. Maybe with Eli, maybe post-Eli. Use Eli to “stay afloat” and not be a perennial bottom dweller, as well as a mentor (this year-next year, whatever). A rebuild is just that, and a rebuild usually takes time, especially if you’re lacking a number of pieces like NYG seems to be.
