You are absolutely right but the reality is that people are going to be ignorant until the Jets and Browns actually get their franchise quarterback. Not worth arguing with fans from teams that have got a franchise quarterback because they are often ignorant to the reality of the situation and just look to the easiest target to cover their own insecurities. Getting a good quarterback relies on two things: drafting as close to the first pick of the draft as possible and a lot of luck. That's it. I'm pretty confident that this years draft is going to work out for both teams.
LOL, I wanted to expand on that post more, since a Colts fan wrote it...They seem to be "killing" the career of the best prospect to enter the league since Peyton Manning...yet he was chiding these two fan bases. We'll see if Luck can recover, if not, the Colts could be in for a LONG search themselves that could rival that of the Browns drought. We will see...I can't dwell on our past because it is so haunting..Other franchise fans love to jump on the criticism based on the past, well, because there is so much evidence to back them up it's easy to do right now. Things DO change regardless of past and I look forward to the Browns past changing soon. Good luck this year!
Packers receiver arrested for making bomb joke at airport While not quite on the level of shouting “fire!” in a crowded theater, whispering “bomb” in an airport apparently will get a guy arrested. Packers receiver Trevor Davis learned that lesson the hard way. According to TMZ, Davis was arrested at LAX after making a joke at the luggage counter about having a bomb in his bags. As the bags being transported by Davis and a female companion were being processed, Davis said to his traveling partner, “Did you remember to pack the explosives?” The woman said in response, “Yes.” Davis, a sixth-round pick in 2016, was promptly taken into custody on a misdemeanor count of making criminal threats. Four years ago this month, former 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested for making a similar “joke” at LAX. He ultimately wasn’t charged. Technically, Davis is subject to scrutiny under the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy, regardless of how the criminal proceeding resolves itself. When he travels to New York for his hearing at the league office, he should probably just take a carry-on. (PFT)
Report: NFL suspends Jalen Collins a fourth time Former Falcons cornerback Jalen Collins is not currently on an NFL roster, and today’s news makes it less likely he ever will be. Collins has been suspended for the first 10 games of the 2018 NFL season, according to Field Yates of ESPN. That marks Collins’ fourth suspension. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season, then suspended for the first 10 games of the 2017 season, then suspended four more games in 2017. Collins has been suspended for violating both the league’s substance-abuse policy and the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy. Realistically, it’s unlikely that a player with Collins’ checkered history will get another chance in the NFL, but he would be eligible to sign with a team now and play during the regular season after sitting out 10 games. Collins is a talented player who was the Falcons’ second-round draft pick in 2015 and has eight career starts. His inability to pass drug tests may result in him failing to realize his talent. Look guys. I meant it when I said I wasn't trying to be rude. I love cheering for underdogs. But like the NFL GM's and coaches see it with their roster, it's "what have you done for me lately?" And facts are facts. The Jets and Browns have made QB after QB look brutally incompetent. I agree fully with Irish's observation that the only thing uglier is the ineptitude of many, many NFL Coaches and coordinators. How some of these guys have their jobs beyond 1.5 years is beyond me. End of the day though, I'm just saying that if I'm on record saying that Darnold will succeed, I see it as 90% likely somewhere like the Giants or Broncos, due to their proven ability to adapt and compete, within my lifetime. The Jets and Browns however, I put his likelihood of success around 20-30%, due to everything they've done in the past 10-20 years. I would love to watch the Browns dominate the AFC North for the next 4-8 years, or the Jets embarrass the Pats for the next decade (or the rest of my years on this Earth). But as the old expression goes, "the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior". And if that's the case, those franchises will fail, with whichever QB they draft. However, even the Cavaliers just won it all. I realize eventually all things will change. Not trying to be ignorant. Just hedging my bets really, when I predict success vs. bust. I hope the Browns take Darnold at one. I'm on record saying it's what I would do. And I hope he turns it around for them. Lord willing! I meant no harm. However, while I'm typing, I might as well disagree with one thing. And it might just be me misunderstanding what Paddy meant. The item I disagree with is "a lot of luck". If the Browns take Darnold or Mayfield or Rosen at one, or four, then I agree some luck will help. If they're dumb enough to snag Allen at 1, then it's not luck. It's bad resource management, scouting, etc. That would make them "the same old Browns" (my ignorant statement). Like taking Geno Smith. That wasn't bad luck, it was bad scouting. His bowl game he gave up two safeties, beyond looking confused many other times. That's a QB with no plan. He was obviously going to fail. The fact the Jets would draft him, and within two years try to replace him with Hackenberg, who was mostly awful in college, is why guys like me make "ignorant statements" about certain teams. You just start trusting certain front offices to screw it up...by whatever means they choose. It sucks as a fan of those teams. Hell, by the way, I'm an Oilers fan. We have the best player in the league and can't make the playoffs. I've fully accepted that until we get a front office that can figure out where the league is headed, I'm going to get shit-talked by fans from every average to above-average franchise in the league. That's just sports for you.
I fully understand this. And I fully agree. To me though, I don't mind being shit-talked. I know our GM's have done a horrible job putting talent around him. I remember Grigson two years ago. We got stomped by the Pats (and any other team with a big back) twice that season. Some no-name, big back pounds our inept, undersized defense for 200+ yards twice that year, controls the clock, beats us senseless. How does Grigson solve that issue? He spends our first round pick in the next draft on a 185lb WR, who was easily over-rated in the first round period, much less for a team that needed defense, an RB, or an OL so much more. That's just bad resource management, and scouting, and especially GM'ing. So when we fall flat on a year like this I am not at all shocked. We're still trying to fix the mistakes of Grigson's tenure. But it's a work in progress. Ask anyone who talks to me regularly...I have never once in the last two seasons claimed the Colts are a threat for the Superbowl. I'm a fan, but I'm also a realist. We have to build a defense first. I'm still a believer that you bring your defense to win a Superbowl. (Eagles kind of the exception this year) Sorry if I picked on your teams to make a point. I am hoping they turn it around.
I really wasn't trying to shit-talk, I completely understand where you are coming from. I even agree with a lot of what you are saying. The problem more is that, as a fan of a team that have been generally pretty shit for a while, it's just frustrating to hear 'lol jets' all the time regardless of whether its actually justified. I'm not calling out you in particular, this forum generally seems pretty logical about things, but people a lot of the time people become unable to actually to recognize when the Jets are doing something smart because they have ingrained in their belief Jets = bad. It's the same for the Browns but probably on a larger scale. I can't even really blame them for this, I understand that good teams are going to shit-talk bad teams like you said, but if you're gonna talk shit at least make it justified. If you wanna shit-talk the Geno or Hackenberg picks go right ahead, we've already given you enough bullets to shoot us with. That said, I take issue with a lot of what you've said about draft QBs. I think the first thing that's important to say is that the Jets have only draft two quarterbacks in the first round of the draft in the last thirty years or so, Chad Pennington and Mark Sanchez (I know that I that I'm biased but I don't even think either of these two were major busts). Neither of these were the number one, two or even three overall pick. QB success rate is so heavily tied to being one of the first few overall picks that can the Jets really be blamed for not finding a franchise quarterback outside the first round? 90% of those QBs won't even be on a NFL team in five years let alone be a franchise quarterback. What I meant by getting lucky with quarterbacks is you can find a franchise QB later in the draft but its always a risk that requires a lot of luck. If teams knew they were getting Tom Brady or Dak Prescott (may be premature) they would be going in the first round rather than later on. If you wanted to argue the Jets suck because they don't make enough effort to pick a quarterback in the first round that's fair, I'd agree with you, but at least this year we are making a move to do something. Regardless, people are still gonna say 'lol Jets QB gonna bust'. I think as a Colts fan, with the highest scouted QB out of college in a long time, it's pretty unfair to call out other teams who haven't got their franchise QB when a lot of your success comes from the fact that you happened to have the first overall pick that particular year. If we draft Josh Allen shit on the Jets all you want, I'll probably join in, but to say Darnold (and presumably Rosen and Mayfield) have a 20% success rate rather than 90% on other teams is just annoying to hear. Do the Jets suck at scouting? Probably. But if a player is going to succeed somewhere I don't see why they couldn't succeed at the Jets. In the last few years we're the team that managed to give best seasons of their career to Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh McCown, not exactly Hall of Fame quarterbacks. This is the first year the Jets are in a good QB class and are making a move to get their franchise quarterback. This will be our highest draft pick used on a quarterback in our entire NFL history. I don't want to hear that whoever we pick is going to bust just because we're the Jets. I'm positive about the Jets' future for the first time in a long time, just allow me that. Unless we draft Josh Allen. In that case we probably do suck and I'll join you in saying 'lol jets'.
Yeah that statement can read the same for me, removing the Jets and inserting the Browns....Just say no, to Josh Allen.
@Paddy_McAndrew , Technically, in 1965 the Jets were still in the AFL draft and selected Joe Namath #1. (He was also drafted at #12 by the St. Louis Cardinals) Unlike when the AAFC merged with the NFL where not all AAFC teams came into the NFL and, thus the records and history of the four teams that did are not recognized by the NFL: when the AFL merged with the NFL, all AFL teams entered the NFL. As such, the records and history of these AFL teams are recognized by the NFL.
Ah okay, I actually had no idea about the records still being recognized so thanks for the information. To be honest, I intentionally didn't include the AFL because it went some way to proving my point lol. That said, Joe Namath is in the Hall of Fame and got us to our only Superbowl victory so I think my point still stands.
FOX: Color Rush uniforms are going away... Color Rush has cut to black. With FOX inheriting the full Thursday Night Football schedule, FOX says that Thursday Night Football no longer will consist of alternative, monochromatic uniforms. Via Jason Barrett of Barrett Sports Media, FOX Sports Executive Vice President of Programming, Research and Content Strategy Bill Wanger said Tuesday at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas that Color Rush uniforms will no longer be used on Thursday nights. Wanger explained that hardcore fans don’t need gimmicks to watch. Wanger also said that the game schedule for Thursday night will be stronger than it’s been in the past. That may be news to CBS and NBC, which could see their Sunday slates become less potent if the NFL pushes “better” games to Thursday nights. Many have complained about and/or lampooned the Color Rush concept, which was subtly downplayed last year with the league quietly allowing teams like Washington (which had a garish yellow-on-yellow getup) to not go through with it. This won’t stop teams from embracing the Color Rush concept on their own. Last week, the Titans unveiled an array of uniforms that includes the light-blue-on-light-blue Smurf look, specifically dubbed the team’s “Color Rush” uniforms. So while Color Rush may be dead as a mandatory, across-the-board program, it possibly still exists as a voluntary, periodic, alternate uniform program. And if Thursday night is going to become even more special, maybe that’s when teams will choose on their own to wear them. ____________ ____________________________ Good. That was nearly as bad as glowing pucks on NHL broadcast's back in the day. The NFL doesn't need gimmicks and changing a uniform color cant do much in drawing attention to the game. I cant think of one team's color-rush uni that looked good. When I saw the Vikings wear them I thought they were out of uniform. That stuff was just silly. Maybe they will try to schedule a decent game since its the only show on Earth that night.
Seahawks to sign Dontae Johnson When the Seahawks face off with the 49ers this season, they’ll be playing against one of their former starting cornerbacks in Richard Sherman. The 49ers will be in a similar position now that the Seahawks have agreed to terms on a deal with a former member of their secondary. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that Dontae Johnson is signing with Seattle. Johnson met with the Seahawks last month and had a more recent visit with the Vikings before opting to sign. He’ll be part of a remade secondary in Seattle as Sherman and Jeremy Lane have been released. Byron Maxwell is a free agent, which leaves Shaquil Griffin and Justin Coleman as the returnees from last year’s group. Johnson started all 16 games for the Niners last year. He had 77 tackles and returned his lone interception for a 50-yard touchdown. (PFT)
Dolphins signing linebacker Terence Garvin... The Dolphins added some special teams help and linebacker depth as they tweak the roster before the draft. Via Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Dolphins are signing linebacker Terence Garvin. Garvin started three games for the Seahawks last year, and spent the previous season in Washington. His first three seasons were with the Steelers. The Dolphins released Lawrence Timmons this offseason and could use some depth inside, as they rebuild their defense. (PFT)
Idk I liked the Steelers color rush jerseys. And I don’t know any fan that watches because of the jerseys...on the whole I don’t care, as long as they aren’t those hideous blue and yellow throwbacks the Eagles wore. Those Jags jerseys in Will’s original post are pretty bad too
David Johnson: We’ll be best offense in league if Sam Bradford’s healthy In the football world, April is a time for optimism about what will happen once September and the regular season arrive. Cardinals running back David Johnson provided a reminder of that on Wednesday. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio, Johnson was asked by Adam Schein about how good the team’s offense can be if quarterback Sam Bradford is able to remain healthy for the entire season. Imagining such a development qualifies as optimistic and Johnson’s answer pushed things even further. “We’re going to be great if Sam Bradford is healthy,” Johnson said. “For me watching him personally I’ve seen him do some great things. I think the biggest thing is just being healthy. Not just with the addition of him, but also the lineman we got, the receivers, and everyone else that we have added to the team on the offensive side, we definitely will be the top offense in the league this year.” Most people would agree that having Johnson healthy would set up a major rebound for the Cardinals offense from last season. That would still leave a big jump from better than last year to best in the league even with Bradford at 100 percent, but it will be months before we’ll have any actual evidence about the overall state of things in Arizona in either direction.
