Wasn't the 8 vs 1, 7 vs 2 playoff format more fair? Why do they insist on going against logic?

Even better still 16 vs 1.

 

Maybe because the system used now gives more importance to Divisions. If they went 1 vs 8 and so forth, why even have Divisions... just Conference's would be needed. That's my off the top of my head answer.

 

Seriously, when you have a possibility of the jets vs preds and boston vs tampa in the conference semi-finals instead of the conference finals, it makes it look bad.

 

Even the nfl doesn't go that far, they give a higher seed to division winners over teams with better records and that's it.

 

Anyways, it is what it is, who's going to listen? This was a commentary from a US sports columnist (usa today).

 

Well, 8 could beat 1 and your in the same situation. My beloved Presidents Trophy winning Red Wings were a premium team all season long and got bounced in the 1st round to the Ducks back in the day. I think you can find fault in either system and also at the same time find benefit.

Personally, I like the new system used now better... the emphasis is based on winning now. Either system, just win your games.

If an 8 makes it as a Cinderella, then so be it. If Tampa and Boston beat each other up, that might bode well for the leafs who may end up playing the winner of that series.

That's happened too, but I'm not sure if that was the opening Quarter Final or not. You may be right and I definitely remember the Ducks tossing Detroit too. Hell, I cant remember what I did this morning tho, lol. The past is one big blur.

 

The original system from when I was a kid when there were 16 teams in the league. The top teams in each division would get a bye and not even play in the peliminary round. Then the 4 winners of the peliminary round would play the 4 division champs in the quarter finals.

 

I hate the new system. Oh we get more rivalries in the playoffs but I want variety. Plus teams play each team so little in division nowadays compared to before that it isn't a big deal. Conference over division. All day. Leafs should be ready to host the Penguins right now.
