Canadian junior hockey team involved in fatal bus crash

NIPAWIN, Saskatchewan (AP) — A crash between a transport truck and a bus carrying a junior hockey team in the province of Saskatchewan has left people dead and others seriously injured, Canadian police said late Friday.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Insp. Ted Munro could not say how many people have died or are hurt.

The bus was carrying the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League to the town of Nipawin for a playoff game. It collided with a transport truck.

”It’s a horrible accident, my God,” said Darren Opp, president of the Nipawin Hawks hockey team. ”It’s very, very bad.”

Opp said a semi T-boned the players’ bus, adding that the coaching staff and players from the Hawks are waiting to help.

”They are sitting in the church just waiting to hear any good news,” he said. ”There’s uncles and moms and dads waiting to hear whether their sons and nephews are OK.”

Pastor Jordan Gadsby at the Apostolic Church in Nipawin said more than a hundred people gathered at the church. ”Some of them are waiting to hear if their kids are alive.”

Gadsby said they know there are multiple fatalities, but they haven’t heard how many.

So sad and tragic... I'm hearing reports of at least 14 dead. Unreal.

 

When I was a kid I would always wonder who was driving that bus. Should I trust him? Not saying it was his fault.

 

That sucks. T-boned so did the driver go through an intersection without looking?

 

Sounds like somebody did, but I don't have those kind of details. From what I gather the driver of the semi hit the bus, so he must have run something. Crash occurred at 5pm, so it was bright... the crash scene photos ive seen look like a war zone. Read a crane had to lift the bus.

Bottom line for me is... you never know and nothing is promised or should be taken for granted. Life is unfair, short and often times tragic.

The cool thing about this is the rallying together of all of the hockey community and governments of Canada to support and help those effected by this, especially love how hockey orginizations North America wide are coming together.

 

Still no statement from the NHL. I can confirm the coach died as his family have revealed it.

It's gonna be a sombering finale to the season tonight.

 

This is a story I did not want to wake up to. My heart goes out to each and everyone affected.

 

One point against the Rangers gets the Flyers in the playoffs. A loss leaves the door open for the Panthers.

 

at least 14 fatalities, but the odd thing is when the crash was reported, there were no fatalities and only injuries. 14 is a big number to not confirm. the Bruins and Raptors send condolences. Sad, awful and tragic.

 

a lot has to happen for that tie game. Flyers take care of business and it's over. Lose and Florida has to win BOTH games. A lot of ask of any team.

Henrik Lundqvist post some message about payback today against the Flyers from 2010 when the Flyers won on the last day of the season in a shootout and went to the Cup finals. Yeah, that was the last time he was relevant was 2010. hahaha.
