I agree with that 100%...but not on the first day of the league year, in the roster situation the Browns are in. That is the difference.

What would be more important, for you? Negotiating with 5 different veterans, with as many helping hands as possible on the ONLY day that some of those veterans will be signing a contract with a team?

    Or

Attend one of about 5 opportunities to learn about a prospect for the #1 overall draft pick? Which won't occur for another month and a half?

Mind you, that prospect had no control over when they scheduled that pro day, it was the school that did it..and you are utilizing the other 4 opportunities.

ONE DAY to sign some of these veterans

One day out of several opportunities to gather some information, not all, on a prospect that cannot be chosen for another month and a half...

And is it also safe to assume that you have 2, maybe 3, QB's ranked very close to each other?

Like I said, I’m willing to simply disagree on this one.

Add to that, the Browns were not absent completely, there were scouts in attendance...In other words, personnel that wouldn't have any input on decisions made on veterans...

    Any number of reasons.

Jesus, you're like Samir in Office Space when asked what he would do with a million dollars. You're completely missing the point of the exercise.

The point is, Darnold at 1, Mayfield is available at 4 and is taken also.

2, but my top guy is being looked at as #5 on most boards and I don’t group passers in with position players because of the difference in perceived value in the draft.

So you disagree that the Browns specifically didn't have major needs to address with veterans this off season, specifically on the first day of the league year? And that possibly getting a small piece of information on a rookie prospect outweighs the need to address that veteran need, from a GM, Coach, O-Coordinator and Owner standpoint? Taking into account that the Browns had representatives at his pro day, just no the big 4.

I've watched quite a few games now and I don't see a guy who is plagued by inaccuracy. I see a guy who gets sloppy with his feet too often. I see a guy who had no offensive skill players to work with who often forced the ball into tight spaces. I see a guy who was pressured an inordinate amount of times and threw a lot of balls away. Fix the feet and give him some skill guys he's north of 60% immediately. Give him a year of solid NFL coaching and he's even better and then when you can unleash him on an NFL field there is not a throw he can't make from anywhere on the field.

Offensive coaches out there are drooling right now thinking about the possibilities. Immediately brings to mind when the Steelers were playing a hot Stafford this year and he was drilling balls in between the CB and safety in Cover 2. There was nothing wrong with the coverage, it was just an indefensible throw by the QB. Unfortunately for Stafford he can't do that consistently and there are still 20 teams out there that would probably take him tomorrow. Speaking of Stafford he was a 57% passer in college, a 62% passer in the NFL.

I can't participate in this because I can't imagine a scenario where only 1 QB is gone in the first 3 picks...Obviously it is possible, but I don't see a universe where it does.

You can insert whomever at 2 and 3. Whoever is picked, say its Rosen and Allen, it would still leave Baker at 4, and QB needy teams beating down the door.

No, I disagree on the handling of the pro day and the value that can be taken out of it. Specifically the idea that it can be simply passed over when it is ultimately the most important decision that the Cleveland Browns will make this off-season in relation to the teams fortune (winning) in the immediate future.

The Broncos are considering Mayfield at #5 and were sure to make the trip regardless of when it was scheduled.

Like I said previously, I understand your point Irish, but I disagree.

Is a team really going to get anything out of a scripted Pro-day beyond 3-4 years of game film and multiple other private interviews or workouts?

Barkley or Chubb at 1 or 2, QB at 3.

His platform is definitely the largest issue, but he waits too long at times to make the correct read, relying on his arm strength instead of anticipation. That's something that I've seen players correct, and others never make an adjustment on. He can get away with it because of how quickly the ball makes it to the target but windows shrink at the next level and he will need to improve in that area. His accuracy on the move can be spotty and he's a better thrower when he simply sees it and let's it fly in those situations.

Yes, because there's more that you can take away from those days than just watching the player. There's a lot of information that can be gathered by simply being in their house around their people and having discussions beyond the 30 minutes on the field.

    Legit question:

College scouts don't already do that 24/7/365 now?

I think he waits because he doesn't have confidence in his guys to gain separation. He wouldn't have that problem with Landry or Gordon. He's also already schooled in a pro system so he has a good understanding of route concepts, timing, protection, etc. I just believe he didn't have anything to work with at Wyoming and felt he had to make the perfect play every time. You put him with a guy like Haley who emphasizes hitting the back foot, taking the hitch step and getting the ball out I think it only helps him fix that issue. When he's in rhythm the ball is there and it's there quickly.

They do, but owners, GMS and coaches get access to people that most scouts don't.

And remember, at the end of the day, the scouts are not the ones making the decisions on the players that are taken. That's the reason why owners and front office personal like to be hands on in these kinds of situations. They get the word straight from the horse instead of having it delivered to them.

I've seen this excuse a thousand times with Allen... what about Lamar Jackson and Josh Rosen? Neither of those guys had stellar rosters. Even Mayfield's isn't world-beaters - especially when you factor in how horrid the OU defense is. Sam Darnold has had the best all-around group of the bunch - as you would expect from a Major 5, high-prestige school like USC.

Point is... why does Allen get a pass?

Mayfield, as a true freshman walk-on at Texas Tech (tell me that's not commiserate with Wyoming in terms of talent), out-produced Allen in every metric - including winning percentage.

The average NFL team has about 7-8 scouts who need to scout anywhere from 200-250 prospects. It's why so many teams use scouting services. Currently the Browns use Scott McCloughan's service which is great except he also reports to many other teams with the same info.
