Madison Bumgarner injury: 'Horrible news' for Giants as X-rays reveal fractured left hand

The Giants' hopes of a major bounce-back this season have taken a major blow in the past few days, specifically to the rotation. Earlier this week, we learned No. 3 starter Jeff Samardzija will begin the season on the disabled list due to a strained pec muscle.

That news was nothing compared to this: Madison Bumgarner has a fracture left hand.

Clayton Kershaw completes spring training with a 0.00 ERA

Clayton Kershaw had nothing left to prove when he exited the mound during his last Cactus League start on Friday. He finished camp with a 0.00 ERA, made all the more impressive after he extended his scoreless streak to 21 1/3 innings following 6 2/3 frames of one-hit ball against the Royals.

In six spring training starts this year, the Dodgers southpaw racked up 12 hits, four walks and 23 strikeouts. His velocity appeared to fluctuate between the high-80s and low-90s from start to start, but manager Dave Roberts told reporters that he expects Kershaw to get back up to the 93 m.p.h. range next week. Kershaw is tabbed for his eighth consecutive Opening Day start on Thursday.

The 30-year-old lefty is poised to enter his 11th season with the club in 2018. He went 18-4 in 27 starts last year and turned in a 2.31 ERA, 1.5 BB/9 and 10.4 SO/9 over 175 innings. He suffered his fair share of bumps and bruises along the way, including a lower back strain that required a five-week stay on the disabled list.

The Dodgers will open their season against the Giants on Thursday, March 29 at 7:08 PM ET. Given the sudden rash of injuries that hit the Giants’ rotation earlier today, Kershaw’s Opening Day opponent has not yet been announced.

    WOW!

The Phillies inked second base prospect Scott Kingery to a six-year extension, the team announced Sunday. The deal is reportedly worth around $24 million guaranteed, per an additional report from FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman, and comes with club options for the 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Kingery, 23, was ranked no. 2 in the Phillies’ system and no. 1 among all second base prospects this winter. He earned a long-awaited promotion to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2017 and slashed a combined .304/.359/.530 with 18 home runs and 29 stolen bases in 603 plate appearances in both Double- and Triple-A. He brought his hot bat to spring training, too, raking in a .391/.415/.725 batting line and earning his first promotion to the majors.

It’s not immediately clear how Kingery will be utilized on the Phillies’ roster. Cesar Hernandez is expected to start at second base for the time being, and previous reports from manager Gabe Kapler indicated that Kingery was more than capable of filling multiple roles for the team — including shortstop, third base, first base, and center field. Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia also notes that Hernandez could be used as trade bait later this year if the Phillies decide to hand the keystone over to Kingery. (HBT)

I saw just a broken finger. It obviously was a lot worse. Ouch.

no idea why the Phils extended Kingery, who never played at the MLB level, this soon. Only 1 other player was extended like this and is was Singleton of Houston. If the Phils kept him in the minors till April 13th, they would've owned his rights another year. The extension ends that, but he's a true 2b. Phillies fans wanted Hernandez traded earlier as they saw Kingery coming up a mile away, but not this early. I hope he works out as he has been killing the ball this spring. The Phils need the kick in the ass.

He's going to be just fine and the Phillies are banking on that. Guess they figured there's no sense in waiting. Another scenario is the Phills are a bust and totally suck, Kingery is hiting .350, so you got a huge hunk a bait to land a few other prospects or for trade.

I don't think they are trading him anytime soon. they are trading Hernandez and Franco now. And with the ownership with deep pockets and an owner wanting to win and will be in the running for the Harper and or Machado sweepstakes this fall, I doubt they totally suck past this year.

and Will - only 1 other player in history had an offer like this without much MLB experience. it's an odd move even if he pans out. if he stayed down the minors till April 13th, they would've retained him an extra year, so they could've done that and watch him pan out or not. Lord knows #1 overall pick Mickey Moniak didn't have a good year last year and needs a monster year this year to avoid the "bust" label.

I believe that both injuries they can live through. They are pretty deep in starting pitchers. I also like what they did on the off season. I think that they'll compete for the wild card at least. Baungardners injury is just to his pinky finger I believe.

Was it. First reports said it was to his pinky finger. I saw the play. It was a comeback to the mound wasn't it?

Yes it was a comebacker... I read it will take 4 to 6 weeks and then the pins will come out. Mab Bum thinks he will pitch before the All-Star break.

Need killer stuff from Johnny Cueto and Ty Blach... they will survive I think.
