NFL says Dez Bryant, Jesse James plays would be catches under new rule

Two of the most controversial plays in recent NFL history would have gone the other way if the proposed new catch rule had been in effect.

NFL head of officiating Al Riveron tweeted that the infamous Dez Bryant non-catch against the Packers in the 2014 playoffs, and the infamous Jesse James non-catch against the Patriots in the 2017 season, both would have been complete under the new catch rule.

The catch rule has been under scrutiny for years, but the Bryant play, which possibly cost the Cowboys the game against the Packers, brought it under particularly intense scrutiny. And the James play, which may have handed the Patriots home-field advantage over the Steelers, appears to have been the last straw.

Whether the new catch rule turns out to be any less controversial than the old catch rule remains to be seen. But it would have changed two of the most controversial plays the NFL has seen. (PFT)

I'd like to propose bonus points be awarded for embarassing arrests in the Franchise League...

Sounds like the Ravens failed Ryan Grant because Crabtree became available. Paging Ted Wells!

Prediction: Patriots win a game with a big catch where the receiver loses the ball going to the ground. Everyone freaks out and the rules is reversed next off season.

Another blockbuster trade: Giants trading DE Jason Pierre-Paul and a 2018 fourth-round pick to Buccaneers for a 2018 third-round pick and a fourth-round pick, source tells ESPN.

If last season is any indication it take at least three of those plays that that are called incomplete to be reversed via replay in favor of the Patriots to get noticed by the league plus just one going against the Patriots to finally push the rule change over the top

Report: Competition Committee not in favor of 15-yard pass interference

NFL executive V.P. of football operations Troy Vincent believes momentum exists for changing defensive pass interference from a spot foul to a 15-yard penalty. Apparently, however, there’s not enough.

Judy Battista of NFL Media reports that the Competition Committee does not favor the adjustment, and that the committee isn’t expected to recommend the change to owners. (PFT)

Good. So many things to discuss, but that was not one of them... a no-brainer in my opinion.

    Cowboys sign Deonte Thompson

The Cowboys spent time with a few receivers this week and they signed one of them on Thursday.

Agent David Canter announced that his client Deonte Thompson has agreed to a deal with Dallas. He joins linebacker Joe Thomas additions to the Cowboys roster this week.

Thompson joined the Bills after playing five games for the Bears last season and caught 27 passes for 430 yards and a touchdown in his 11 appearances for Buffalo. He has 77 catches for 1,032 yards and four touchdowns since entering the league with the Ravens in 2012.

The Cowboys now have Thompson, Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley to go with Dez Bryant at wide receiver.

And they basically just admitted today under the current rules, the Clement catch was not a catch.

Lol to be fair, the Patriots lost a game to the Jets that season on that same rule. People act like the tuck rule was only called once. Good ruling, silly rule.

What I find crazy is that the NFL says they want to go back to only conclusive evidence can overturn calls. Like wow they just admitted they weren't doing that and just guessing probabilities to overturn calls with inconclusive evidence. So they admit that for YEARS they were going AGAINST the rules thy set in their book.

    TRASH.

    Dolphins sign Frank Gore

    Frank Gore is going home.

Gore, the longtime veteran running back who was born in Miami, grew up in the area and played college ball for the Miami Hurricanes, has signed with the Dolphins.

It’s a one-year deal for Gore, who will turn 35 in May and may only have one more year left in him. Gore started all 16 games last season for the Colts and had 961 rushing yards, but his average of 3.68 yards per carry was a career low. It’s impressive that Gore has gone on for this long, but he might not be able to keep playing beyond 2018.

If this does turn out to be his last year, it’s fitting that he could end his career in Miami, playing for his hometown team. After 10 seasons with the 49ers and three with the Colts, Gore’s 14th NFL season will be in his hometown.

Gore is fifth in NFL history with 14,026 rushing yards and should pass Curtis Martin (14,101) for fourth place within the first week or two of the season. At that point he’d be behind only Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton and Barry Sanders in NFL history. (PFT)

And that’s your irrelevant news of the day. 35 year old RB joins average team who just lost their starting Center, star D-lineman, and best WR. Sounds like a team on the rise

To be fair, talent questions notwithstanding, that team was sorely in need of a personality enema.

Perhaps. I would have started with the head coach personally. I’m sitting here trying to think of who the 3 best players on that team even are. They’re kind of a scrap heap at this point. If Tannehill can stay healthy all year it might go a long way
