Jesus, I have missed a lot of football over the last couple of years. I have no idea who that QB is. Or the kicker that was signed. At list I know Prince used to be on the Giants and I remember Fuller from the draft. Damn.
Well if it makes you feel any better, you don't have to do any catching up on Prince's career INT's number, its the same as when you left him.
Fuller hasn’t been extended yet. He can talk with other teams and the transition tag to my understanding means pace has the last chance to match any deal offered. I don’t know if someone offers too much for Fuller if the bears gain some kind of compensation. Transition tag isn’t used too much, and in the NBA and NHL with restricted free agents, teams tender the draft pick cost to take their guy
I thought they get nothing if Fuller leaves, which is part of the risk with the transition tag, but does also provide a little extra motivation to keep him if you wanna look at it that way. I agree the transition tag was prob the way to go, and I do think(actually its more hope) that Pace won't let Fuller go. But when the deal does get done I expect Bears fans to experience a sharp contracting of the sphincter, cos its gonna be a big number....
I don't buy opposing QBR as an end all, be all stat to use against CBs. I can buy gameplanning as part of the formula for the first half of the season at most. Deeper into the season teams are gameplanning based on that season's game film....not previous seasons. I don't think anyone saw Fuller's performance in the first 8 games of the year and said....oh, yeah let's pick on this guy. And unless coaches watch film half drunk....if Amukamara wasn't covering well then he would have been gameplanned to be picked on. It would show up on film that he wasn't playing well. He isn't a turnover machine by any means but he does cover well....and does so in a scheme that demands good coverage. And did so even in games that the pass rush became non existent. I'd rate Amukamara as a slightly better than average corner....it would be nice to have an upgrade....but he played far better this past season than I expected. Something you can probably say about the entire secondary. It's simply what you can demand at that position. No one ever really gets paid what they are worth. I know right now I am happy with Prince at what he got versus what some others guys are getting from other teams. I don't really have an issue with a guy that will make few mistakes over the course of the season and not give up big, back breaking plays while otherwise being average to just slightly above average otherwise.
Cards cut Tyrann Mathieu after he refused a pay cut. Still only, 26? I think. I haven’t seen enough of him to judge, but he gets a lot of good press, for whatever that’s worth.
Free agency hasn’t even begun and he had no market? I get you don’t like him. But don’t be naive. In a league that is desperate for good DB’s you can bet you ass Prince had a market. His biggest issue was getting past the injury bug which he did by playing the past 2 seasons injury free. If you think 6mill per below the top salaries at the position is overpaying I don’t know what to tell you.
He’s been banged up and from what Adam Schefter reported, cards asked him to take a pay cut and he declined. So they cut him. Burnett wouldn’t be bad for depth behind Amos/Jackson, but if this guy can still play, bears need another few dbs
Neither do i, but it is a very useful piece of information to an open mind. And that's the 4th stat i've thrown out there re Prince, the other three being PD's, INT's, & targets. Haven't seen anyone else contributing much besides generalizations that Prince is "good in coverage"... And yet Fuller continued to be targeted consistently throughout the season. He was targeted 110-115 times(most or 2nd most in NFL) depending on which site you believe. He didn't have 90targets in weeks 1-8, then 20 the rest of the season, he got thrown on all year. So yes, teams did continue to go at him and yes it was a mistake based on both his stats and his eye test. I can't dress that up for anyone, the writing should've been on the wall by week 6, for some reason it wasn't. It was nothing to do with Prince tho. Of course, but unless you are among the elite at your position, you don't get to decide that, as Urlacher so painfully discovered at the end. The market sets your value. Prince was coming off two 1year deals in which he totaled 0 picks. He wasn't a liability, ok, but thats not grabbing anyone's attention. He was also in a deep FA class at his position in which he was no way top5, but maybe top10. No one else was paying him even last years salary, let alone a bump of 2mil. And honestly, its not even the money that bothers me as much. Its the fact Pace had a loaded class where he could've clearly upgraded for the same/not much more relative to what he paid Prince..... and he didn't. He played it safe, or IMO, was a pussy. I suspect it betrays Pace's lack of ability/confidence perhaps, in identifying talent at CB. Pace needed to be bold re WR's this FA and he has been. Pace clearly thinks he's the man when it comes to WR eval, over the last 4offseasons that has become clear. CB's though, not so much.
Please don't say this and then follow it up by calling me naive, it just makes you look silly. Ok, so what was it? Tell me. I asked this precise question a page ago in good conscience and no one had the balls to take it on. So im asking again not being a dick, please tell me rob. He has not been injury free in either season. Both seasons he's missed multiple games with injuries. Next. I'm really trying not to be a dick here, and you know for me thats not easy. But i don't have time to list all of the ways in which this is a dumb statement.
Saints sign Patrick Robinson. 4years, $20million, $10million guaranteed. This should've been ballpark for what Prince got, certainly in terms of the per year and 50% guaranteed. Its not a direct comparison cos Robinson manned the slot last year. Outside corners will always carry more value. On the flip side of that tho is the fact Robinson played really well last year. PFF ranked him the #6 CB in the league. He also had this thing called an interception. 4 of em in fact. And over double the PD's of Amukamara.
Details of Taylor Gabriel's contract emerge. 4years, $28million, $14million guaranteed. Now i get the scheme argument and all of that. But damn! That is a hell of a lot of coin for this kid. He's been in the league 4years, he's never even had 40catches in a season! Pace is filling holes, i'll give him that, but he is overpaying BIG at every turn. And i know its FA, you often overpay. But there's also many many examples of teams getting a steal. Where is Pace's steal, Codey Parker? Yay?
Listen, prick, I have an open mind. I lived through the 60s and 70s. I wish he got more picks. He's just never been that guy in his career, for whatever reason. It doesn't mean he can't cover...because he definitely can. So bite me. C'mon.....QBs around the league aren't simply that stupid. Nor are OC's and HC's. I'm actually totally fine with what they paid Prince versus was some other guys are getting. History kinda says that CBs that get paid top dollar in FA tend to regress. Bears keep continuity....they can focus on pass rushers early in the draft and snag a CB at some point to develop.
Numbers are what they are. It depends on how much stock you really feel like putting into them. Lack of INTs? The bears as a whole have had garbage turnover differential under John Fox and until they fix that, focusing in on one guy on the unit because you think he got overpaid is just an exhausting argument to have. INTs are about opportunity, and that's such a grey area to start arguing in. Kyle Fuller had 2 INTs and is going to make double digit millions from somebody. I guess I'm not that upset about 9 mil per year for 2 years at least. He's capable, and we know what he is. It could be much worse. Marcus Cooper is slated to make 5.5 mil in 2018. 9 mil doesn't look so ugly to me there. And Patrick Robinson? That's your litmus test for how much he should be paid? Wasn't he on the defense as a starting CB that Brian Hoyer torched for just under 400 yards and 3 TDs when he was a colt in 2016? He rebounded in 2017 because he made pennies on an all-star defense as a role player because that was his wheel house. And you know I hated Brian Hoyer and don't want to give him any credit. We're not arguing Prince is something he's not. But hes better than Robinson, and I'll take him at 9 mil for 2 years at least over Malcolm Butler or Trumaine Johnson at 15 mil with more than 2 years guaranteed. If there was a better, more cost efficient option, we'd have heard about Pace trying to get it by now. Its not a "wow!" signing. Its an "eh, okay" signing. ^ * * * GUYS! The bears will play the retarded giraffe in 2018! Glennon signs 2 year deal with Cardinals at 4 mil per year. God I hope Sam Bradford can be made of glass just once at the right time....
This right here, hell maybe even less than "eh, okay" and more "eh, whatever, there are bigger problems". More than he's worth, but I'm not losing sleep about it, particularly with all the holes and potentially still losing Fuller. Pace made a bunch of holes freeing up money, spend it I guess. I do have to say I love your hatred of him though Ev. I don't remember you screaming about how shitty he was all season. He's serviceable. Replaceable no doubt, but it's not like he signed a Cutler contract. Hell he didn't even sign a Glennon contract. This doesn't stop him from drafting CB at all if his guy is there.
Haha, sorry that wasn't meant as a dig at you there, although now i can see how it might've looked that way. Respect the fact that you partied your way thru the 60's & 70's. Bet those 20's were killer though Pat, when you start going to Brian Hoyer for points i know my argument is shredded. Although in my defense i wasn't saying sign Robinson, i like Callahan in the slot. Was highlighting the contract structure more than anything.
