The good thing about not picking up Howard's option is that the Ravens could still get a comp pick for him next year. I definitely see an OT and a C in the Ravens draft this year.
Marquis Lee is off the board too now. Resigned by the Jags. Amendola is expected to signed with the Fins. Richardson signed $40M deal with the Skins. Not only are we missing out on the 1st tier WRs, but the middle tier ones too. I'm guessing Ozzie is holding true to form and looking for the value guys in the 2nd round of cuts. Almost kind of wished he'd have just grabbed a "winner" in his last season as GM. I'm sorry to say it, but I'm so ready for a new ravens GM. He was great in his time, but has failed to change his strategy and approach over time which has cost us. Slow and steady doesn't always win the race.
Agree with this. I was hoping Richardson or Lee were the targets for the Ravens all along and they were looking to have the big money teams sign the premier names and that would leave us with some choices, but it looks like we are left with choosing to sign Terrell Pryor or wait for the draft. I would rather got without a wide receiver than give that guy any more money. Cuts or trade look like are our only avenues to get a veteran, developed guy.
And I hope they are actually not considering a rookie as the #1 either. They need a solid veteran presence. Wallace doesn't seem like he's that type (i.e Boldin, Mason, S. Smith).
so breaking news is that the packers are supposedly cutting Jordy Nelson....what are the odds and what are the interest levels on this side? I knew they would do something after giving Devante Adams all the money last year and still having control of Randall Cobb.....
I'd take Nelson in a heart beat on a 2-4 year deal depending on salary, guaranteed money and other details. He's a consummate pro and would set a great example for the receiving corp. Of course he has his injury history. But the man can sure play.
Looks like Ravens in advanced talks with John Brown. If healthy, it would be very good signing. He's not a true #1, but he is better than anyone the Ravens have now. Thing with Brown is, he needs another receiver to keep the double team off him. In AZ he's had Fitzgerald.
If healthy, Nelson would be like Derrick Mason. Consummate pro. Great teacher. His speed is basically a memory, but he has great hands and knows how to get separation.
Nelson is resigning with the Packers after being cut tomorrow at a lower salary. And even if he weren't, why in the world would you want a soon to be 33-year old receiver that while good..........has also been a product of having arguably the best QB in football throw to him the better part of the last decade? You can't just say............well he's better than what we have now. That isn't reason alone to sign somebody as a free agent.
This makes no sense. Nelson IS better than anyone we have now and that IS what this point of free agency is all about. He's even better than John Brown (if they are in advanced talks with him) which I'm not a fan of. Depth players are not the targets right now. It looks like the reason that Nelson is being released is that Graham is expected to sign with them. (That would be another top guy we're missing out on.) It probably not be possible for the Pack to float both guys and they have said "good bye" to Jordy so I doubt there's a reunion.
Ravens will sign John Brown to a one-year contract. The base value of his new contract is $5MM, but he’ll have the chance to max out at $6.5MM via incentives.
I think the biggest issue is loyalty. While loyalty is a good thing in many cases, there comes a time where you have to cut bait. Yes, he has defended mediocrity, but his refusal to let certain players and coaches go, has been his downfall. As much as I can't stand Bellichek and the Patriots, one of the things he does is know when to trade players or just let them walk in FA. Like the Ravens of old, he uses the next man up philosophy and trades his "stars" when they still have 3-4 good years left for 3rd/4th rd draft picks or lets them walk in FA knowing he already has the replacement on the team or signs a less expensive FA. The Ravens used to do the same, but recently have gone for the top FA's thus losing their usual 3-4 comp picks every year. Part of that was because they didn't replace their 3 top scouts that left which has left a void in the drafting. Then, of course there's Harbaugh's influence...........
He came down to the Greene Turtle in Ocean City and blamed injuries. That's a terrible message when you're an owner.
As per PFR, Nelson will not be re-signing with the Packers for less money. Nelson is not a "product" of having Rogers as his QB. That is just an insane statement. He would've been a top WR anywhere he played, but his numbers over years probably would not have been as outrageous if he had been with a team that had any semblance of a consistent running game. As for signing a 33 year old receiver, it worked out pretty well with guys like SSS, Mason, and Boldin. Ravens to sign Ryan Grant.
