Actually whats criminal is that there isn't a clear QB AVAILABLE to be touted as that #1 overall pick. The ONE guy you and I agree on, is the odds on favorite to be the 3rd/4th QB drafted. If it's Sam Darnold #1 Minkah Fitzpatrick #4 or Saquon Barkley #1 Baker Mayfield #4 (because Rosen and Darnold/Allen are already gone before #4) I would be ECSTATIC with #2 option...disappointed with #1 option, but still excited because frankly, I love Fitzpatrick. Option #1 doesn't help our offense short term at all...I believe Kizer would beat out Darnold this off season just based on familiarity. Option #2 improves this offense IMMEDIATELY with Barkley.
When you really stop and think about it . . . it always comes down to either a guy can play the postion or he can't. Stats are simply a means to quantify or keep score if you will. The ultimate stat - Wins and Loses - are more a product of the other 21 guys on the field at any given time than the QB alone. Completion % and passing yards are equally influenced by the guy on the receiving end of a pass. If those guys can't outrun a glacier or have cinder blocks for hands, neither of those two stats mean diddly squat. It basically comes down to the "eye test". Can he play the postion or not. IMHO, there are two QB's in this draft that can play the position. Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. (Maybe, to a lessor degree - Josh Rosen.) I admit my past distain for Darnold was only based on the long line of QB busts that came out of USC. But, when I went and actually watched him, he passed the eye test. The fact that he had Tommy Trojan on his helmet is irrelevant. Like the rest of you . . . I have no fucking idea who the Browns are going to pick to be their next "Franchise Quarterback". As long as its one of these two, I'll be happy.
Friendly reminder, if this team *isn't* planning to take Baker Mayfield, the choices should be: #1 - Saquon Barkley #4 - Quenton Nelson
You want another guy that can't score TDs or be a playmaker when you just said they can't score...ask Thomas how that worked out
Saquon Barkley? - Good. Saquon Barkley with a near-perfect OG lead-blocking for him? - Great. Ask Shaun Alexander what he thought of Steve Hutchinson.
Wow. So much to go over, and yet so much overlooked... I'm not just talking about a guy in shorts. Read the post. I said "sometimes his gamefilm looks spectacular". I've watched more Josh Allen film, than probably any other QB, because we don't see many Wyoming games....Though as much as I'd like to take credit for having that sort of influence on the world, it's not "my take" on Josh Allen that has propelled him into the #1 overall conversation. I was simply pointing that he IS in that conversation...FTR, Deshone Kizer never had em buzzing at the Combine about his amazing arm. You can keep making the comparison, but nobody ever said of Kizer, "He's got the strongest arm we've ever seen."...Anyway, that's irrelevant. The point is that Josh Allen is thought of in much higher regard That's just not true...They are not the same guy. And Kizer has no "strong suits"...Give Allen weapons like Kizer had a few years ago and see what happens. And all the talk about college production as if it's just a "matter of fact" that it translates to the NFL is ridiculous...We know that it doesn't. As Lyman pointed out, many variables at work. Does the prospect pass the eye test? All I've EVER said about Allen is that I'm intrigued by his talent and at times he looked spectacular in games. Obviously he has the build you are looking for... Smh... You are entitled to your opinion. This is one of those bold statements that amuses me. Like the "he's undraftable" remark I read somewhere, from somebody...How are we supposed to give comments like that any merit? Real NFL GM's have this guy firmly in the top part of the draft conversation, that's all I'm sayin. Evidently there are some highly paid talent evaluaters that think the kid can be really good...Much better than what they thought of Kizer apparently. Small hands? ...Take off the Notre Dame goggles and look at where Josh Allen is rated overall, and the things that are being reported.....It's not close between Allen and Kizer IMO.
per Mike Freeman. Bleacher report... The truth about Josh Rosen Darron Cummings/Associated Press Like others, I've heard the veiled (and not so veiled) criticisms of UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen. He's arrogant. He's a rich kid, and rich kids aren't hungry. He's too politically active. In a season in which foolish ideas swirl heavily, the ones about Rosen are among the most absurd. Several teams told B/R, however, that when they interviewed Rosen at the combine, he was smart, down to earth and clearly loved football. These teams, at least, had no concerns about him. That won't stop the silliness of this season, but at least, for some teams, a portrait of who Rosen really is and what he cares about is a lot clearer than a week ago.
Great post. The only thing I really disagree with is how many quarterbacks in this draft might actually be viable NFL starters. Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, Rosen and Rudolph all have scores that put them at or near an NFL starters level (Jackson is just a touch outside) but none of their scores are as high as Mahomes or Trubisky from last season. It will always be personal preference as to who someone may want to see as their quarterback, but I see 5 passers that are upgrades to what the Browns currently have on the roster by a pretty large gap. And just to clear something up real quick - I know that some here think I hate on Baker. I don't. My concerns are based solely on how I score prospects and how those scores are related to what I view as the necessary elements for success at the NFL level. When I disagree with someone here over Mayfield, I'm not stating that he's trash. It's easy for some to think that when they see zero holes in his game. My opinion on him is simply not the same. I don't think he will flame out or bust, and I am by no means projecting that when I don't have him listed as the top quarterback in this class. And remember, I was projecting him as a first round pick in February. That would be February of 2017. When he was still considered a third round pick.
There was a rumor early on that the Browns would avoid taking a quarterback in this draft and look to make a deal for McCarron and Bradford. I don't see how Cleveland can do that to start Dorsey's run unless he is ready to let Hue have McCarron to sink or swim with Bradford as his potential 3 year bridge to draft a quarterback in 2019.
I haven't heard that one...IMO, the only way we weren't picking a QB high in round 1 is if we would have signed Kirk Cousins.... FWIW, I don't see how having McCarron and Bradford on the roster could honestly convince a GM that the QB situation is strong...
Bradford - while not even on my long list of preferences - would make a lot more sense than McCarron. Mr. Katherine Webb has repeatedly said that he wants to be a starter. Hue Jackson had the NSFW lust-session during the last match-up with him. Dorsey should and will take a QB #1 overall who'll take over sooner rather than later. Why sign McCarron to a multi-year deal - and pair him with a coach who will obviously show a preference to him over the rookie (or even Kizer)? That said, I still see McCarron as the guy if he's willing to sign a contract that basically makes him a 1-2 year starter at most and he only keeps the job if he has the Browns in the playoff hunt.
