Where Do We Go From Here?

  1. One of your silliest posts yet....you really think Cousins cares what happens in 5 yrs from now lol

Why's that, because I disagree with your Kizer = Allen take? lol! hardly. C'mon Irish, we're Browns fans talkin about quarterbacks. There is no room for sensitivity here... People just gettin a little carried away with the comparisons IMO.... Plus, IDK how some are SO certain on everything regarding these QB prospects. I don't know if it's like some "3-eyed raven" craziness from, Game of Thrones, or what.....But I guess we'll find out soon enough. It does seem like emotional attachments have already formed for Mayfield in Brownstown...I hope we take him. If not, it's gonna be brutal for some fans evidently.

I like Mayfield, but not so much that I've psychologically ruled out the possibility of the Browns going a different direction...

Everyone has a right to their opinion...I said from the beginning that I'm not going to go all in on ANY QB prospect. They are too hard to judge and these GM's are blowing smoke everywhere....If I was making the call, my list would be:
    1. Mayfield - I've not changed my mind since he planted the flag in The Shoe. Reasons why have all been listed....but it really seems that NFL GM's will favor the prototype every single time if they think it's even close. I'm just not convinced Browns are taking a 6 foot tall QB...
    2. Allen - If you can harness that and let him grow into the position, he might be a superstar...
    3. Rosen- He looks like the classic NFL pocket passer...

Yet you look around at the mocks, and most see us taking Darnold....So who knows?

At this point, just my opinion....I think the Browns will take Barkley at #1, and they are trying to decide right now if they want to move up from #4 to #2 for the QB, or just sit tight and live with what falls to #4.....I sorta get the feeling they are going to try to move up, and if they do I believe it'll be for Mayfield....

Sorry, the panties post was based in the fact you dwelled on one post long enough to make two about my one post. Didn't mean anything by it.

Here's the things you must not realize based on your post, but that I thought you were aware of all along.

Before Kizer's Junior year, he was being touted as a possible #1 overall draft pick. Mitch Trubisky wasn't even in the conversation. It came down to, would it be Kizer or Watson? Then that season happened and the entire Irish team fell apart and it was laid squarely at the feet if Kizer. Right or wrong (for the record, I am falling in the right category), that pushed him to the second round.

Second, you are talking about a guy in shorts making a drop back from under center and because of that, propelling him to the #1 overall...because it sure as hell wouldn't be from his college production.

Kizer DID play under center in college some. They played a pro style offense. The majority was out of the shot gun, but it wasn't pistol, it was shot gun and occasionally they did go from under center.

Fourth, Kizer outperformed Allen in college. They each had two years as starters and although Kizer certainly didn't shine, he certainly DID play much better than Allen. Allen had an arm, but let's not forget, that was one of Kizer's strong suits as well. These are the same guy, with Kizer having a more successful college resume.

Now you look at Kizer's first year as a pro and you erase all of his college success and warts(I said it again). EVERYONE agreed, Kizer was a project not worthy of the first round..including me..he was a project, propelled to starter out of necessity...and he looked like a project last year. I really don't know why anyone is surprised, he did exactly what everyone thought he would do...not what they hoped, but what they thought.

Right now I think Allen is 3 years away from competence. Last year I thought Kizer needed at least 2 years sitting (until we vanquished all our veterans on the roster).

So, I am biased against Allen in the fact I feel we have the same type project on the team already...but I think you are blinded by a guy throwing the ball in shorts. Go back and look at his film, he is nothing more than a long term project.

At least the Browns waited and took Kizer towards the top of where he should have been drafted. Shame on them for not teaching him before forcing him into the starter role. Taking Allen in the first round, let alone the top 5 overall is a mistake in my opinion.

As for not being able to hold his jock strap, what solid evidence is there for making that statement?

I actually hope you are right...frankly none of the QBs are worthy of the #1 overall. We are picking one out of desperation. I simply only see one guy that projects to being a star if he can overcome some stereotype hurdles facing him in the pros, and that's Mayfield. He has more of the factors I look for in a prospect than the others, that's why I am so entrenched in his bandwagon. We ARE taking a QB, so it seems, so I was resigned to the fact I would study them and see if I could recognize one that clearly stands above the rest...in my opinion, that is Mayfield. I still have other prospects ranked higher, which is why it's such a hard decision.

Now, turning back to Kizer, I do have Mayfield rated higher than Kizer when he came out. I also have him rated higher than my top QBs the past two years in Watson and Wentz. I didn't want any of these QBs higher than that #12 pick where I projected us taking Watson if we were taking a first round QB. I didn't want any QB taken in the first in 2016...I also had Kizer ranked exactly where we took him in the draft..in fact that is the spot I drafted him to the Browns in the mock draft last year.

This year, I have strong feelings about the QBs and my thoughts are flying against most of the Browns brethren.

I have Mayfield as the clear #1 in this class. Because of his position, I deem him worthy of that #4 pick, BECAUSE I have him ranked in the top ten overall, even if he isn't in the top 5 overall. He's still the highest QB I have ranked since Luck.

Next I have Darnold, this is where everyone else on her and myself differ. I think he had less warts than the rest of the field. He is also the only other QB I gave a first round grade to. I have him behind Watson last year and Wentz the year before, but before all the other QBs the past two years. In fact I have him neck and neck with Carson Wentz, whom I said I wouldn't take in the first round in 2016 unless he dropped to the twenties and we traded up for him.

The rest of these players have such large question marks hanging over their heads, I deem them undraftable in the first round. Inevitably, they will all go, most of them in the top ten.

My feelings remain, Mayfield is the best, and safest, investment in this draft at QB.

I would welcome a Barkley at #1 overall...he would make every player on offense look better. He would take pressure off whomever they draft simply by being the #1 pick. I think he is mature enough to handle it and if paired with Mayfield, I think you would instantly have that leadership in the locker room this offense has lacked for years.

    That's my take..

Sorry I was on my phone earlier and couldn't expand on this statistically

Here are the two (2) year college starters:
    25 games started 365 comp/649 attempts, 56.2%, 7.8 Y/A, 7.7 AY/A, 44TD, 21INT, 137.7 Rating
    25 games started 422 comp/695 attempts, 60.7%, 8.4 Y/A, 8.5 AY/A, 47TD, 19INT, 147.7 Rating

Tell me again how these aren't the same player...the only difference is one did it against top echelon defensive talent playing at Notre Dame, while the other played at Wyoming against the mighty Mountain West.

    Best teams Allen faced:
    2016 Nebraska 16/32 50%, 189 yards, 1 TD/5 INT, 1 sack
    2017 Iowa 23/40 57.5%, 174 yards, 0 TD/2 INT, 3 sacks

Find me evidence elsewhere that shows he can do anything against higher level programs, let alone professional. At least Wentz DOMINATED the lower level talent.

Kizer had at least some success:
    2015 Ohio State 22/37 59.5%, 284 yards, 2 TD/1 INT, 2 sacks
    2016 Michigan State 20/37 54.1%, 344 yards, 2 TD/1 INT, 2 sacks

These are the players coming out of college against similar defenses

I will give you, Kizer had a better offensive line against these defenses...except...that statistically that isn't even true...in these Big Ten games, the Cowboys gave up 4 sacks and the Irish gave up 3 sacks.

Sorry, TD, I have more evidence than a drill at the combine for my argument that these two players are basically the same coming out of college.

DeShone Kizer has all the tools, but I believe more and more the early reports about his love for the game - he just doesn't love football enough.

Josh Allen has all the tools *and* seems to love the game... he's just not good at it.

    Not even a little bit.

If the plan is not to take Mayfield and they don't take Rosen at #4, then please, please, please skip the QB position until the middle rounds for another "developmental" guy. None of the rest of the field aside from Mayfield or Rosen are going to help this team win any games.

  9. Sorry people arnt waiting on 1st and 2nd round picks for 2-3 yrs...they will find out soon and if you can't cut it you become a journeyman QB....there are to many examples where players get it after 1 season or a handful of games....Kizer had Nelson, McGlinchey, Fuller, Adams and others on offense...did a Wyoming player even get drafted in the last 2-3 yrs on offense?

    Re: Kizer

No, he's not Jared Goff. But more (most?) importantly, Hue Jackson isn't Sean McVay. That said...

DeShone Kizer *is* a developmental QB. His ceiling is likely high-end back-up, but that's quite honestly much more than I can say for Josh Allen. Kizer's got a much higher ceiling than Allen and I have an extremely low opinion of Kizer, so...

Why in the hell wouldn't he? If he cares at all...he would care about 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022....He's 29 years old, so he should care about every season between now and and about 37 years old. Anything after 37 is icing. That's still a short window to operate in.

IF my main goal was to win a Super Bowl, would I rather go to a team with a 2 year window outlook? or a team with a 5 year window outlook?

It's difficult to get to and win Super Bowls...even Tom Brady doesn't win them every year, and Kirk Cousins is no Tom Brady.

  16. He may not b in the league in 5 yrs...injuries, love of the game, talent diminished

  17. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Let's focus on this for one moment...

EVERY QB over the past 5 years that "got it after 1 season or a handful of games"...what was the team makeup for where he was drafted? Did he really "get it" or was he drafted into an optimal situation?

We will see what Russell Wilson is really made of, they are dismantling the Seahawks defense as we type

We already saw Dak Prescott take a major hit when Zeke Elliot is missing from the lineup

None of these guys who "just get it" really "get it" by themselves, they are in situations for success...

This Browns team in 2017, do you really think any of the:
Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott, Carson Wentz, etc...QBs would have stepped in day 1 and won games with that roster...remember, that roster didn't have Josh Gordon on it for the majority of games either...

This, win now or move along attitude is why so many prospects do lose out on an opportunity to grow. When the coach that drafts him gets moved, their career takes a big hit.

I mentioned this here a while back, but the Browns are just flat-out bad at scoring points.

The Los Angeles Rams scored 30+ points nine times last season. We've gone almost three league years without scoring that many points (and it took us an overtime period to do it).

    ^^^^^^

Friendly reminder that our draft has to be tilted very heavily towards the offense.

Criminal, when you think about it, that our team - so starved for a QB since we broke Tim Couch - is favored to take a running back over a potential franchise QB.
