I watched in spots yesterday, but DVRd it and started going through, just the drills again this morning when I woke up around 5:00... Baker Mayfield made EVERYTHING look easy. Even when they were doing the WR drills. You are so biased against him for some reason, hoping he will fail, you fail to see the best QB in this class. Every other QB had at least some shaky moment yesterday...Mayfield did not. I still have some more to watch, so maybe it comes later. I will give you this, Allen has been my #2, as far as the combine throwing in shorts is concerned. Rosen looks like he thinks he has it wrapped up...He isn't sharp, like he is just going through the motions. I like his footwork, but his anticipation is not good, nor was his placement. If you want a perfect example, go to the slant route drill. Listen to the explanation..."run through the cone out of the break and expect the ball at that second cone". First off, none of the WOs ran through the route, they broke down too much out of the break... Mayfield, threw off the break on the first receiver, and the timing was way off. The next two throws, he read the receivers feet and put the ball shoulder high to their nose about a foot in front of that back shoulder turning for the ball..It doesn't get more perfect than that on a route that you must catch and make a football move in order to gain more yards after catch. Rosen, repeatedly put the ball out 2-3 feet in front of the receiver causing the receiver to over extend their arms or lunge to adjust to the ball, which would give defenders an opportunity to adjust and move up taking away YAC. It's subtle things...Rosen needs a LOT more work than these talking heads would like to admit. Then on out routes, 3 throws, 3 uncatchable balls. The only thing that really impressed me with Rosen was the deep ball. It looked great honestly. **side note...James Washington ran this slant route the best, really the only one I saw coming out of the break properly. I have a new found respect for Washington after re-watching the film from yesterday. I'll look at him more closely. Also...Lauletta, undraftable, only route throw I saw consistency in was the out. As far as hands and control of their body...a name I don't hear much about jumped out..Marquez Valdes-Scantling. I can't find film on him, anyone have any links? I'd take a later round flier just to see what professional coaching could do for this 6'-3" kid. As always, the combine is only used to verify film. Really shouldn't use it as a tool to rank any players. Mayfield didn't disappoint. Everything you expected from film, he was sharp as expected. He didn't help or hurt his position, he just verified it as the top QB in the draft. The only one that really helped himself for me was Josh Allen. He was more consistent in every throw he made today..again, take it with a grain of salt. For me, that means he went from a sure second round at the highest project to someone I would consider if I already had an aging QB and were picking lower in the first round. I am EXTREMELY hesitant though, as Kizer last year showed me more on film than most..I actually had him as my #2 in that class. He didn't have a good combine and I didn't move him off #2. We all saw what his tape showed translate to the NFL. Those same difficulties on game film are prevalent with Josh Allen...He is extremely similar to DeShone Kizer, so you better get a vet that can play very well for at least 2 years until DeShone is ready...not Allen. Mason Rudolph was one of my higher ranked QBs this year also, and he did not impress yesterday. He was consistent in bad ball placement. Like I said, I still have more to watch, but after 5 1/2 hours in with the WOs done, it remains obvious... Baker Mayfield, then everyone else. I think everyone else hurt their stock besides Josh Allen...but you still have Allen's tape, which hurts him. The only other one to not hurt himself in hindsight is Sam Darnold. I honestly don't like the fact that every other QB threw and he chose not to, that hurts my competitive spirit scale for him, but at least he didn't hurt his stock with inconsistent throws.
Here's the thing... DeShone Kizer LOVES to come in early and stay late, get extra work in with receivers... Baker Mayfield LOVES to get extra work in with receivers... We end up getting someone like AJ McCarron out of necessity because the bigger free agents/tradeables are opposed to coming to Cleveland... I actually believe Kizer and Mayfield would help McCarron by putting pressure on him to work his ass off. To me, in the worst case scenario McCarron, that would be a solid QB room with the work ethic.
Ya Rudolph was less than impressive yesterday and really exposed the things on film that his WR helped him compensate for. #DISAPPOINTED#NOTEVENCLOSE He’s probably the biggest reason I have been so high on Rudolph. The biggest knock I’ve found consistently about his game is his route running.
I'm biased but you fail to watch w an open eye how he was behind his 1st coupe of throws and had the WR almost top on his deep ball
Yahoo's Charles Robinson spoke to one NFL evaluator who said Wyoming QB Josh Allen "seemed like he was showing off a little and wanted to be the alpha dog" in his position group at the NFL Combine. "That’s exactly what you want in a guy like that," the evaluator concluded. From what we've seen, Allen received zero negative feedback for his on-field activities in Indianapolis. Allen has checked many boxes during the draft process and stepped up to the occasion at each spot. He is absolutely in play for the No. 1 pick despite his warts.
I thought Mayfield did exactly what was expected of him, so if you had a certain opinion of him going in it was probably the same coming out.
Can you link me to some comments like this? My comment was completely subjective to whatever you may have thought about Baker going in. There was nothing in his day that really stood out one way or the other IMO. If you had a negative take on Baker, he likely didn't do enough to change your mind. Likewise, if you had a positive take on Baker, there was nothing extreme to make you jump off the bandwagon. All he did for me was confirm my previous views on him so if someone had a take that was extreme in one way or the other, my suggestion would be to go back and look at the film to see what you missed previously. To put that in perspective on a personal level - Nick Chubb tested much better in the horizontal movement drills than what I expected him to so I have to go back and see if there is something I am missing or if his style of play simply mitigates those numbers.
You said: "a lot of analysts" You didn't say: "Kurt Warner said" Not trying to bust your chops, but I think the love and hate on Baker cuts both ways in here so I was hoping to see something concrete connected to what you were saying. Especially considering the love that Mayfield was getting for the quickness in his drops (footwork stuff).
No it doesn't. Teams that don't see anything special from him are just going to take him off their board for that.
That was one of the things Warner said was a weakness...he was very slow in his drops which made him late on throws....let's put it this way nobody is talking about him on his performance...the other guys in the studio were all blown away by Allen
Depends on which broadcast you are listening to then, because the comments on Bucky and Lance's side were that Mayfield was making quick steps in his drops and setting up neatly at the bottom. All I'm saying is that you can't make a blanket statement that infers there are a lot of analysts slamming Baker for his footwork when you can't link it or state more than one person that was commenting about it. The reason I asked you to cite it was because it went against everything that I had heard or read on Baker's day. I just needed you to back it up with something so that I could see what the issue was, in their opinion. It seemed like a stretch when you posted it...
Well he was great at the Senior Bowl, and he tested well in several drills. If nothing else, he is a good athlete...Undraftable seems extreme, but that's just my take.
