I thought parts of this presser was just funny listening to Hue. This guy said we have to "trust him" when we drafted Cody Kessler (under 6 foot 2). Then he comes out the next year and draws the line at 6'2". "You must be at least that tall to play QB in the NFL", he said...And now that the top prospect (naturally) measures in under the magic number, he is backpedaling all over the place...smh. You almost have to laugh. At least until you remember he's the Browns coach....The guy is a piece of work. Although that "gung ho" enthusiasm of his, has been dialed down a notch: Jackson's looking for a 10 Last year, Jackson drew a line at the quarterback position at 6-foot-2. He’s being forced to reconsider that this year, though, now that one of the top prospects in this class, Baker Mayfield, measured in right around six feet tall at the Senior Bowl. “There’s always outliers, right?” Jackson said. “Yeah, I did say there, but there’s always guys who, I mean, there’s still guys in the league that are playing that are below 6-2 that have played really well.” So what’s the measurable of choice this year? Hand size. “I want a 10, you know,” Jackson said. In the end, though, if the player doesn’t measure up, the decision comes down to a simple question. “Can he play?” Jackson said. “At the end of the day, I think we know that’s what it all comes down to. You have to have a starting point, right? You want a guy to be this tall, you want a guy to be this big, you want a guy to have this kind of hand size, but at the end of the day, can the guy play the position?” ^^^The "QB whisperer".
OR.....Maybe that's why Mount is the best Div. III program in the entire nation? Ever stop to think about that? Why doesn't every other program that these QBs are coming from have players coming out of the woodwork saying the same things? You might have been spoiled at Mount Union buddy. Fact is, this is a kid taking the program on his shoulders, it isn't part of the program itself. It may be a part of Mount Union, as far as, every year they are taught by the upper class that "this is the way it is, or you can leave". Don't you ever wonder why no other programs can de-thrown them? Look stopper, I respect that you are former player and a current coach. But, you get these bias thoughts towards players and there is no coming off of them. I have my strong feelings at times as well, some of them wrong, some have been spot on....In this case though, Baker Mayfield's makeup as a player is just growing stronger and stronger as this process unfolds. SAS and I knew it pretty early in the process ~Congrats Sam!!! (edit: and thanks for getting me turned on to him!), but everyone else is welcome aboard the Mayfield bus. This is the best QB in this class and it isn't close. You are propping up wannabes because you hate to admit you are wrong, I get it, I do too. In this case, his case just keeps getting stronger and stronger...As of today, there are only TWO issues keeping him from being the consensus best player in the draft...1) He is 6 foot 3/8 of an inch tall... 2) He has maturity issues. Not, floating on swans or having a blow up hot tub in his dorm nownow issues...but there was the arrest, flag planting and crotch grab...you know maturity issues that a LOT of college men go through. He is not a "ME" guy, he is the "best teammate on his team" kind of guy. I know this comparison keeps popping up, but Brett Favre had the same maturity issues and was one of the best football players to ever play professionally. Notice I said FOOTBALL PLAYER and not QB...he was one of the best QBs, but he was a football player playing the position of QB...Too many kids these days are just QBs playing the game of football. Mayfield is a franchise changer type of player..If he were TWO INCHES taller, there would be 15 teams attempting to make the Browns the richest deal possible to climb to #1 overall to pick him...Sorry, but two inches isn't swaying my thoughts on the kid one iota. I LOVE Saquon Barkley AND Minkah Fitzpatrick, but I am not passing on the possibility of the next Brett Favre when I have the card to turn in that beats everyone else's to the podium...that simple. I'll get ONE of the other two at #4.
I was gonna go there with my reply, but I just couldn't...All he does is push buttons. Never stops stirring the shit. Last thing I want to do is compliment his team.
Food for thought. And if the Broncos sign Kirk Cousins, believe that they'd trade that #5 pick for someone looking to jump the Jets to grab Mayfield. If we don't take him at #1, we're not gonna get another chance.
But what does the head coach/coordinator who took a team from worst-to-first in offense know about quarterbacks...
One more Baker this morning... Yes... that's Mayfield pressured versus the rest of the guys from a perfect pocket. #ItsNotClose
I agree...honestly, I just think the media is just late to the party. The teams and real scouts already are on to him...
Actually, slightly below average... The smallest acceptable, by those who use this metric, is 9 1/4. Most prefer 9 1/2 or bigger....So, 9 3/8 is actually acceptable, but for me...they are a little small.
Well, I'm 6'2" and have 9 1/2" hands, so yeah. I would want my potential franchise QB to have bigger mitts than me... especially if he were 1-2 inches taller. As @IrishDawg42 pointed out, the minimum is 9 1/4 (Goff was 9" flat and got eviscerated for it... he turned out fine).
Mayfield and Rosen will have hands-down better careers in the NFL than Darnold, but I guarantee we're going to continue to hear how Darnold is "built like a QB", despite being smaller than Rosen and his biggest asset being able to "create when the play breaks down" while also #StopperTheorem'ing Mayfield for that same trait.
Also not sure why Rob Rang put the guy with 9 7/8 hands below the guys with 9 1/2 hands... EDIT: I just realized the guy with 9 3/8 is ahead of guys with 9 1/2 (4/8)... so... maybe Rang was just doing it in the order they weighed in? Either that, or he doesn't 'get' fractions.
Mainsteam Media: "You have to love how Sam Darnold can play from within the pocket, although his biggest strength is the ability to create when plays break down." Intellectuals: "Actually, Baker Mayfield was the best from within the pocket, best when pressured, and best when forced to create something outside of the play design." MM: "But he's small. Sam Darnold looks like an NFL quarterback." Intellectuals: "Well, Josh Rosen is actually bigger/thicker than Darnold." MM: "Browns are going to draft Josh Allen anyway." Intellectuals:
Bottom line none of the QBs have small hands if that's something to base your opinion on their ability to play the position
