Guaranteed money is the signing bonus then the rest is the base salary guaranteed.
So in year 1 he had $18M accounted for with his $6M base salary and $12 signing bonus.
In year 2 $5M of his $10M base salary is guaranteed. So if the team hates him before the halfway point of year 2 they are stuck paying him $5M in year 2 anyways and having that count towards the cap if they cut him.
However unlike signing bonuses, guaranteed base salary is moved onto the new team and their cap when the player is traded.

Unless they win it all...In which case, I would look at it as the cost of winning a world championship.

It's like what Chris said. Restructuring JPP a bunch would be foolish. You don't restructure a guy you think you'll likely move on from.

I went to 13M without blinking, then he went to 16M and I had to sleep on it. and thats what got me to 17m, and the 19m bid was rather reluctant. The idea that this is one year with restructures is going to inflate every star contract.

  5. TopDawg Legend

Agreed on that..I didn't follow JPP, but evidently his production was way down. So that is understandable. Nobody wants to be chained to a turd.

I for instance restructured Fletcher Cox, Lane Johnson and Zach Ertz. I expect all of them to easily stick to their contracts although I'm taking an injury risk and need to understand my cap will be higher next year with less rollover. I also understand that my team is not (and in real life seems to be the case as well) going to be going heavy in free agency the next few years and will try to extend their own guys and build through the draft.

Yeah, I restructured Woods and Barron because Woods has suddenly made that contract which looked godawful (5 years, $30m) look like a total bargain and Barron is worth keeping at least another year, and there's still a decent cap saving to cutting him next year. It was just punting a decision on him down the line by a year. I was tempted to restructure Quinn or Whitworth, but either of those could be gone on a year and the cap maths didn't really add up.

I do think restructures might be a bit overpowered. Maybe they should be accompanied by some sort of virtual dice roll to determine whether the player is going to accept it or not?

You are both right. I handle this closer to how Soffacet portrayed his approach. But TD, handling the Chargers with an aging Phillip Rivers, it makes perfect sense to go into “win now!” mode.

I generally always approach these things trying to do things as I imagine real GMs would, incorporating current and future concerns. At the same time, in a simulation I existed in the market I found myself in. So I “overpaid” some for Whitehead and Fleming, my top 2 targets. But I played the restructures very close to “in real life”. Colts didn’t really need space, so I didn’t restructure anyone, since it would hurt us in future years.

Anyway, I started a hell of a conversation. Sorry mods :dum:

I was reading up on it last night Beach. Does that even count for third year guys? The article referenced “4 or more”, but the third year vet min is still more than $630,000.

So does 3rd year qualify? Just for my cap education...

I already answered that on the post after that.

Any football conversation is a good conversation in my book...

I love hearing the different perspectives from the GM's. It gives me new things to consider. Always trying to learn. There are some real masters at work here. The challenge as I saw it, was very basic. Stay within the rules of the exercise, and figure out a way to compete with the Eagles. I studied that roster quite a bit, and came away knowing I needed to do much more than I originally thought. That's a $190m dollar team in Philly. It was going to take more than just a few tweaks for the Chargers to get there...

Right so you are only seeing 23 million not the 31.5 Spotrac says right?

If Zietler really got 31.5 in guarantees that would change the nature of the contract I expect Norwell to sign.

  15. LAOJoe Assistant Coach Manager Patreon Silver Maple Leafs Eagles

Apparently there is contract language that makes base salary in future years also become fully guaranteed once the 2018 league year starts and OTC and Spotrac both don't show anything yet.

Case in point to how differently I was looking at this. I just assumed it was a given that every GM would restructure 3 contracts...

This is why I'm not sure what to think of the real life Cleveland Browns situation. So GM John Dorsey has $110m dollars in cap space. Well the Browns have had the most cap space for three years now. What has it done for us? Why was Sashi hoarding the money??? I keep hearing about how great our financial situation is, while we pile up the losses at a record clip...It's agravating to say the least..The Haslam's speak of their frustration, but they have only been around for a few years. I'm not sure anyone can grasp the level of frustration that long time Browns fans have felt...

This fits with why I went ahead and restructured the particular players that I did. They're players that I intend to keep for a long time, and the cap space that I freed up will roll over if I don't need it. That makes the back-loading moot.
