The notion of building a system-specific roster hits many topics beyond just a single player. In this case, I'm with Lyman - if it's specifically centered around Lamar Jackson and something happens to him, you're toast.

But the concept as a whole fits. And I'd follow it up with this question: if you're rebuilding and specifically targeting that type of system, why not sign Tyrod and Josh Johnson and RG3 or Kaepernick and skip Lamar Jackson, using that high draft pick elsewhere (or trading it for a package of draft picks)?

In terms of roster building, one advantage of a funky scheme is that the guys you value aren't so highly valued league-wide, making it easier to find and obtain your players. But if you spend your top pick on that player and still have to build around him from the ground up, you're putting yourself at a disadvantage.

    re: ERFA's and RFA's.

In your case, you signed (?) Tyrell Williams, Trevor Williams and Russell Hansbrough for a total of $1,605,000. Spotrak has no way of knowing you did that so you have to make sure those dollars come off of your cap space.

Wow. Glad I asked...Tyrell will likely get signed to an offer I won't match, but I haven't accounted for the other two...Thanks Lym.

I thought I heard an "Oh Shit !!" coming from the general direction of southern California. :D

ERFA/RFA: take a look at the roster by position in your spreadsheet. Those ERFA and RFA players that you tendered aren't on the list, so they aren't included in Spotrac's cap calcuation. But after we started this exercise you offered them tenders, and unless someone else offered/signed them away, they signed their tenders this week. They're on your roster, so you need to add them in the same way you added in your free agents.

(You're keeping a transactions list on the web page to track your cap changes. I like that method. I was going to work all my changes into the spreadsheet itself, but I think your way will make it easier for the mods to audit it if needed. Not that it matters much for me at the moment, as I'm still reveling in my patent-pending "don't just do something, sit there" approach to free agency.)

Just add the ERFAs and RFAs to your transactions list, treating them as free agents that you have signed. That's basically what they are - the tenders are 1-year free agent contracts, with the only difference being that the players involved aren't able to negotiate. The tender amounts are the amount of cap space you spent to sign them.

PPE: first a quick bit of background on why we have this seemingly effed-up rule. Players who are drafted are signed to four year contracts. Players who don't get drafted and sign as UDFAs have shorter contracts. Those UDFAs become eligible for restricted free agency after their third year, while the drafted guys are still on their rookie contracts.

So if you're good enough coming out of college to be a mid/late round draft pick and you play well enough as a pro that you don't get released, you get hosed in year four. You're stuck making only $705k while the guys who went undrafted are getting tendered for $1.9M or more.

The PPE thing is meant to even things out. It takes the mid/late picks in the final year of their rookie contracts, and for the ones who qualify based on playing time, it bumps up their base salaries to equal the lowest level RFA tender.

Someone (Joe / Tim / Beach) will have to double check me on the math here, but you basically take $1,915,602 and subtract what Spotrac lists as the base salary of your PPE player. That's the amount his pay goes up - and the amount you would need to add to your cap calculations.

Because none of them are franchise QBs. Sure if they get injured it won't matter much but that is because you aren't going to win the superbowl anyways. If Lamar get's injured you go from a 12 win team to a 6 win team. If Kaep gets injured you go from a 6 win team to a 5 win team

They are also very cheap contracts so dds are the take only a few hundred grand off the cap if anything.

Those three contracts added up to $1,605,000. That's $1,605,000 that were not included in the postional rosters (thus not included in the original cap). Is there some fuzzy Canadian math that converts $1,605,000 to a few hundred thousand?

Top 51 contracts only count. If he has 51 contracts already then each new guy signed bump downs another cheaper player from counting to towards the cap to not counting to the cap anymore.

Looking at TD's spreadsheet, he isn't currently caculating top 51 cap. (He probably has more cap space than he thinks!) Until he does, he's going to eat the entire $1.6M.

If you are talking about the chart I'm supposed to be adjusting through the e-mail from Tim,....That thing is likely a mess. It might be accurate, but I haven't looked for a while. I can't remember what math I put into that. Probably incorrect math... I tried to make a few adjustments a while back and just got lost.... That's why I'm keeping tabs on every transaction from the Sportrac worksheet..and notes on good ol pen and paper. Don't worry. I plan to get to everything...

    I can't find a way to calculate this trade on Sportrac;

pick 5(18) for OT jordan Mills (CAP $2,150,000)

I traded the pick for the player...I've been just making notes so I remember to calculate that one by hand...

$200k of Mills cap hit is prorated signing bonus so that doesn't shift to you. His cap number for you is 1,950,000 and the team he left takes $200k in dead money.

Okay I see what you are saying...I've got $480,000/yr bottom feeders drawing my cap number down. I'll make the adjustments....I'm only supposed count the top 51. Got it.

Exactly. That's what I was referring to in the first post about tracking your top 51 or top 53.

You might want to figure your top 53 rather than just the top 51 if you'd like to be more realistic about the exercise. Many of us try to keep that in mind even though the top 51 is what gets listed on the spreadsheet.

The reason is that the top 51 rule is only for the offseason / preseason. Once teams get to the final roster cuts and the regular season kicks in, all base salaries count. You'd be setting your team up for a really bad situation if you didn't leave cap space for the next two guys on the list.

I placed a FA bid on a kicker at $775,000, as the first page states, but I think that was changed to a minimum of $790,000 which doesn't seem to be updated. Should and can I edit it to $790,000?

    Thanks...
