Actually, I agree with part of this... First it goes GM...... Then, input from all... I don't think there is a hierarchy, it is Dorsey's decision, but he will be hearing from everyone involved and the one that makes the best points will get his ear and his decision. If Todd Haley makes a great argument and at least some of the scouts back up that argument, then I would say Haley will have a large voice when it comes to choosing the QB. This draft war room will be active from now until about a week before the draft. Arguments will be heard, there will be small decisions on who not to take, then they will argue the most important of them all..Which QB is the consensus #1 in the Browns war room? Once that decision is made, other arguments will be heard as to why any other player should be taken before that QB. BUT, much of that will become more or less important based on what they can accomplish in free agency. This is an important off season, there will be a lot of conversations, some more heated than others. In the end, Dorsey will be making the calls.
I think this is being way too black and white... Here is how the mini conversations go in January/February... The scouts are doing their jobs right now, scouting, scaling, grading, writing reports, discovering why the grade became what it was and verifying those grades. The GM is directing where each of these factions are going and how they are being utilized, while also doing his own research on the forefront candidates in both free agency, then the draft...right now the focus is on free agency for him because that is what is first. The coordinators are meeting daily with their coaching staff, hearing extensive closing evaluations on the current players. When this tedious task finally ends, they finally get to move on to WHAT DO WE NEED to improve as a unit? With each cycle, the coordinators are writing reports for the HC, GM and Haslem. Then Hue will meet with them individually several times a week to get a better understanding of the reports and stay on the same page with both coordinators. HOPEFULLY this is done a couple weeks advance of free agency. It takes a lot of time to ready for free agency, but if you don't have the proper identification of need, then you are spinning wheels when FA hits. Now, end of February comes calling and you have a direct board of evaluations on current players, rating them against others in the league at their position and have a clear idea of where you stack up as a team. You bring in your pro player personnel staff and immediately scour to see what players will give your position group the best opportunity to get better. The GM, HC and Coordinators at this time become a sounding board for that personnel. When they ask each group of scouts where can we find players to do a certain aspect, they can throw those grades up and determine a course of action. There is a hope that this process can be defined to a week long exercise, so that you can then move into determining if the draft holds stronger positions to take care of weaker free agency positions...If so, then you can focus on individuals in free agency instead of positions. Determine how much cap can be spent on each aspect and hopefully when the new league year rolls around you have a well balanced understanding of what can be discussed with agents during the "legal tampering week". You should know before the end of that week where you stand with free agents. Dorsey will direct all of this...He won't simply sit in a room for two months looking through reports and during tampering week start making phone calls based on his own determination...THEN, sign whomever he wants...and move on to the draft to make the picks that he wants. It is a business, full of meeting after meeting, evaluations of meetings, then a new set of meetings daily until everything is resolved....THEN you start on next year.
It does seem like classic over-thinking when ya put it ^^^that way...But I get it. They gotta get this right.
A return to Cleveland may be in order for Terrelle Pryor Posted by Michael David Smith on February 19, 2018, 5:14 AM EST Getty Images In 2016, Browns receiver Terrelle Pryor was one of the NFL’s pleasant surprises, a converted quarterback who changed positions and caught 77 passes for 1,007 yards. In 2017, the Browns let Pryor walk in free agency, and that didn’t work out well for anyone. Pryor ended up in Washington, where he managed just 20 catches for 240 yards, and the Browns spent more money on a lesser receiver, Kenny Britt, who managed just 18 catches for 233 yards before they cut him. In 2018, it would make a lot of sense for the Browns and Pryor to get back together. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com writes that the Browns are likely to pursue Pryor when he becomes a free agent next month, and Pryor would want to return to Cleveland. According to Cabot, Pryor wanted to stay in Cleveland last year, but the Browns decided to move on to Britt. Now the Browns have a different G.M., with John Dorsey replacing Sashi Brown, and they have the same head coach, Hue Jackson, who saw Pryor play well in his offense. A return to Cleveland would make plenty of sense for all parties.
Myles Garrett blows away field as PFF's top rookie edge defender Myles Garrett made quite an impression in his rookie year. Despite missing a handful of games with injuries, the No. 1 overall pick handily graded out as the top rookie edge defender. Garrett scored nearly 10 points higher than the next-closest rookie, Cincinnati’s Carl Lawson, according to Pro Football Focus’ grading. View image on Twitter Pro Football Focus ✔@PFF The top graded rookie edge defenders! 8:16 AM - Feb 18, 2018 The “edge” designation, for those unfamiliar, is a combination of 3-4 outside linebackers, 4-3 defensive ends (what Garrett plays) and other players who line up outside the tackles whose primary role is to rush the passer and stop perimeter runs. Garrett finished 12th overall amongst edge defenders on the season and was the highest-graded edge in the AFC North.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...on-would-mark-a-new-low-in-nfl-qb-desperation ^^^Good read. I agree with it 100%
Hey, how about another mock? I know this theory has been popular with some Browns fans: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...-taniers-guesstacular-first-round-predictions
Meh, Saw that... I'm in the group that believes Cousins is NOT the "guy" that will take the Browns to the SB. I'd Rather go All in on Drew Brees for 2-years and take my chances there. my $0.02
wow. Just listening to Bill Polian and the ESPN "heads, talking about what the Browns should do to solve their QB situation. And they actually all came to the same conclusion that there is very little reason to believe that things will turn around for Cleveland anytime soon. They all agreed that there is NO good fit from a free agency perspective. The Browns supposedly had one opportunity at a really good fit, and that went out the window when Alex Smith went to Redskins...Any QB that even considers coming to Cleveland is only about the money, according to Fielding Yates. And Darren Woodson added that the ONLY hope for the Browns would lie in the hands of Sam Darnold, but it'll be "years" before any noticeable changes happen for the Browns because they are SO devoid of talent....We only have 2 NFL worthy talents on offense according to Polian, and that's the incredibly unreliable Josh Gordon, and David Njoku.... Wth? It was as depressing as any report I've EVER heard on the Cleveland Browns...What's wrong with these a-holes? I don't see why they can't look at our cap number and our draft resources and see a little more reason for optimism than that...geez. They mentioned 1-31 at least 3 times during the 5 minute Browns report. I really is brutal being a Browns fan sometimes....
I know u don't want to hear it but talent can win a few games....I can guarantee you Pitt, NE, Philly, Minny, Jax, etc can show up w/out coaches over 16 games and win a game...the coaching was bad and add in one of the less talented rosters and that's how you get 0-16....for example, I believe the Chic Bears DT said I guarantee a win vs the Browns....the game wasn't even close and was dominated by Chic after that bulletin board material and knowing there were a couple of games left from being 0-16....why? I just can't believe they won't trade 2-3 draft picks for a proven young player that may be available....mayb Amari Cooper, Devonta Freeman type players
That's brilliant...Are you under the impression that I'm somehow unaware that Sashi stripped this thing down to the nubs? It's comments like ^^that, that piss people off...Just read what I said in the post. Simply that our cap situation and our draft capital are reason for a bit of optimism. That's all I said...The national media seems to even want to snuff out our hope, but by god I'm not letting that happen...With capable talent evaluaters in the right front office positions, it's not ALL doom and gloom here....There really is more to say about the Cleveland Browns than "1 and 31", but as I've warned many times, the media simply won't let us escape Hue's record....
So w that cap space, lets speculate, they offer McCarron 4 yrs $48M, Watkins 4 yrs $36M, Hyde 3 yrs $27M and V Davis 3 yrs $18M.....I dont think many people would be excited about that free agent group and thats what their speculating...will they make the right moves
What? Who is speculating this, the media? They don't know what the hell the Browns are going to do...Personally, I'd be shocked if they went after Sammy Watkins. Why would we want another high priced 1st rd bust WR? And I don't know if you'll see Dorsey commit that much to McCarron. I don't even know if Dorsey likes him. Or if our new OC thinks he's a good fit? Just because Hue made a desperate panic move in the middle of last season for AJM, because he knew he couldn't win a game with Kizer, doesn't mean we will go all in on him now. I still have serious questions about that idea. I mean for one, we just saw what happens when you inanely go into an NFL season with an entire QB room that has never won a game at this level. So what, we sign McCarron, draft another rookie, and then we are gonna just roll in with a QB room that has 2 wins?? Good lord, they better pick the right rook, that's all I can say... The one thing that I'm pretty sure all Browns fans CAN actually agree on, as it pertains to our QB situation, is that we don't wat to see Kizer on the field in 2018...
Too bad the Chargers overpaid/outbid me in the GM exercise I/we are going through right now I don't think anyone else would have upped that bid...but A BROWNS FAN comes along and ups it by not $1M, but $2M???? WTH?
McCarron isn't signing a 4 year deal unless someone (please don't be the Browns, please don't be the Browns) gets into a bidding war for him, which I doubt, and they only way to get him is a 4 year deal. However, THAT deal would look more like the one the Bears struck out on with Mike Glennon a 3 year $45-47M deal...AND THAT TEAM will be laughed at next year for giving it to him. However, McCarron's camp isn't signing a 4 yr $48M deal because he thinks he is a starter in this league. He will want a 2 year prove it deal. So, McCarron will probably in reality get something like a 2 year $35M deal, with only about $10M guaranteed, but the second year voidable. He might as well be signing a 1 year contract. As for WRs, I don't have a clue what they are planning. I do think the camp has turned (according to reports) and they are going to rely on Josh Gordon to be a part of this team in 2018. That tells me they need a guy like Jarvis Landry to complement him. Watkins has been too inconsistent to pay him $12M a year. Jarvis has stayed healthier over their career..etc. I would much rather over pay for Landry, knowing what you are getting. Finally $9M a year for Hyde is a tad on the high side, his market value is closer to $6M, so I think overpaying to the tune of about 4 year $26M is more in line for him. I haven't heard ANYONE speculating on Vernon Davis, where did that come from? I think they are happy with their TE group.
