Are you me? I've wanted to see a an offense with a mobile quarterback based around player versatility for years. As you touched on, my favorite benefit is that you can line up in a pass heavy or run heavy look to start then trap the defense they send to counteract it on the field and abuse them.

I would love Samuels or Flowers in that h-back role.

How about drafting Lamar, then signing Tyrod and Josh Johnson?

  4. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

That will get you to week #3. Whatcha gonna do for weeks 4 through 17?

At least I know where you stand on this opinion.

Hackenberg was the worst example I have ever seen. His bad intangibles only got worse each year in college. It was the biggest, most obvious red flag I have ever seen in a QB. More so than Johnny Manziel.

Hack had the most visible regression I think I have ever witnessed in a potential draft prospect.

I think his stock plummeted at such a rocket pace from one year to the next that GMs refused to believe he could be that bad, lol.

I swear if I was the head scout on a team and the GM/Coach overruled me and drafted Hackenberg in the first 3 rounds I would have resigned to save my reputation and because I obviously wasn't wanted. I felt that strongly about him sucking.

Yep, but it was still so obvious that he would get over-drafted.

Oh I knew he would go in the first few rounds. You might remember someone was arguing with me and betting that he would be great and drafted in the 1st 2 rounds.

I told him I totally agree some team will take him in the 2nd round but that that doesn't mean he won't be trash.

In that regard I see him as sort of Cam Newton, but without the bulk. Which is obviously a red flag if you're planning to run him 10+ times per game. You're futuristic offense sounds interesting Tim, and probably would work really well for maybe 1-2 years. But like creative ideas before it, the defenses will catch up...and in the meantime you still need Jackson to be able to make quality defensive reads to get everyone in the right place and make the right decision. I was actually just watching his tape last night. I think I fall in the hate him camp. Not because I actually hate him, but I am decidedly a bit more conservative in how I want my quarterbacks to run an offense.

There is clearly defensive back-breaking potential with the mobile QB's, but the best in the game are still the pocket style first QB's (Brady, Peyton, Rodgers). Wilson (as someone stated earlier) might be the best (or only?) exception and the prototype everyone wants guys like Jackson to become. And even that only really works because he looks to throw first. That will be a huge transition for Jackson because on tape he definitely prefers to run. One read and his instincts tell him to take off. In college his legs can get him out of almost anything. It's a tough habit that many mobile college guys struggle to break.

Probably unfair to call him trash. Was is it when you are so bad they won't take you out of the package and let you show how bad you are?

I don't think it's unfair at all. Maybe a little mean to a kid but your heart has to go away from evaluations. I think the Jets and finally all their fans figured it out.

I was with you. Another one that shocked me was Logan Thomas, the Cardinals ended up taking him in the 5th round. Wasted pick. He was so bad on tape, but fit the physical measurements QB coaches swoon over, so a guy like Arians who loves downfield shots probably let his QB coach talk him into that one.

My recollection was hearing some hype the year before he declared. Turned on tape during his draft year. Didn't get through 3 games. I was just like Why??! Clearly the hype was mostly media because he did last until the 5th round, but still. Wasted draft pick

If you are talking about me, I'm gonna have to quote Roger Clemmons here and say you must be "mis-remembering" Joe...lol!

Actually I drafted him with a late 5th rounder. Then you criticized the pick. Then I simply said he would be one of the top "RISERS" in the Draft Value Challenge....Which you agreed. But I told you that you weren't allowwed to use him in the challenge for critiqing the pick in rd 5...lol!

I never claimed he'd be great though. Hell I watched him every year against Ohio State. He's a classic example of GM's falling in love with the prototypical build...

I believe you are right then about that. But I did have a similar convo with someone else on twitter. I might have merged the 2 in my mind just now.

Hey if RT can critique Thomas in round 5 I can critique The Hack in the 5th as well, or any round.

Don't necessarily disagree with any of this, but I do stand by my original point that if you are going to make that decision to use a player with Lamar's specific skill set you have to be willing to go all in with a change in offensive philosophy, or else his selection is a wasted pick.

I'm making no declarations on what the success rate would be, how long it would be effective or how long Jackson would survive running it at the pro level.

If a team were to go all in with Lamar, this is a direction that I would be extremely interested in seeing it go.

Wasn't there a time when the Jets QB depth chart read:
    Geno Smith
    Bryce Petty
    Hackenberg

?? Good Lord, their fans should have asked for a subsidy on season tickets...

I agree...but it should be a rule that if you criticize a pick that severely, you can't turn around and pick it as one of the best picks of the "Value Challenge" lol!
