2018 Restructured Contracts

The Sportrac restructures are definitely more realistic than the existing ones, as typically players aren't that fond of taking pay cuts. I guess if you have a guy who was eligible for one of the old restructures (fewer than 2 years of their contract left) you would like to keep but at a reduced pay, you could always cut him and look to resign him - its unlikely that the cap hit from cutting someone with not much time left on a deal would outweigh the saving you were hoping to make. Its kinda the equivalent of letting a guy test the market (which they usually seem to sneakily do before agreeing to a paycut in reality).

Last year I had the Bills and they had Tyrod Taylor with 3 years left but there was an option to cut him. Instead they made a new deal but I couldn't do that. So I had to cut him or else he'd make a shit ton and hope to resign him. The market got high quickly and I had to back off. Settled for Jay Cutler cheap as a bridge and honestly it was probably the right move.

I'm just now looking at the Spotrac tool and unless I'm missing something it doesn't appear you can restructure bonuses through Spotrac. Has anyone else used it?

I don't think you can restructure bonuses. All it does is a very simple restructure (converting this year's base salary into the veteran minimum and giving the player the rest as a signing bonus, which gets spread across the remainder of the contract). Its a restructure where the player gets paid exactly the same amount as he would have anyway, he just gets it as a one-off bonus, rather than as weekly game checks.

The Spotrac tool is primitive. Overthecap.com does it the right way, which is the way teams do it as well. An NFL team isn't going to restructure a 3.5M base salary while paying a 7.5M roster bonus. That is what the Spotrac calculator does to Stephen Tuitt's pay this year. It's dumb and as I said primitive.

I'm good with using this on restructures. The numbers for basic restructures work out to be the same as on spotrac, the difference in being the use of extensions as some of those will show an increase in money saved.

I'm adding it into the rules now.

Thank you for changing on the fly but I'm a little confused by the extension part. OTC just throws the roster bonuses into it's formula. No years or added. Or maybe I'm not understanding what you mean.

p.s. I'm always willing to spot check for anyone that has a question.

Ya I got a bit confused there as well. Especially since we can't extend here.

I forgot about the no extension part, and all apologies ahead of time because I am still under the weather.

When I looked at players for the Texans that I may restructure, the numbers for savings were the same on both sites unless I used the extension.

Someone may have to slow walk me through my Dayquil induced blur...

All you have to do is hit the restructure tab at OTC. If you saw the same number that you would have seen at Spotrac it's likely because there wasn't a roster bonus in the contract so the extension would only be based on the base salary - as it is at Spotrac.

I'm guessing you were looking at J.J. Watt, DeAndre Hopkins and Jadeveon Clowney. They don't have roster bonuses in their deals.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have restructured 3 contracts:

Ben Roethlisberger Max Restructure - new cap hit 15,207,500 - savings 7,992,500
Antonio Brown Max Restructure - new cap hit 7,955,000 - savings 9,720,000
Stephon Tuitt Max Restructure - new cap hit 5,432,000 - savings 8,168,000

    Total Savings $25,880,500

When considering rules last season we made the decision that there would be no extensions, only restructures, and I think that's where we are coming up with a potential problem.

It's weird. Using Spotrac's tool Jason Peters saves more than they are apparently allowed too. Lol. Beach can you confirm.

Well I'll be restructuring Cox and Johnson but it looks like it won't be Peters for the penis innuendo trifecta.

Can you confirm the rule for no extensions so that we don't get too far ahead of ourselves with using both links?

There are no extensions allowed. We had pseudo extension last year if players had 1-2 years left but that is no longer the case. I'm not quite sure what you are asking about Tim. From hat I understand the tool on OTC shows the max amount when you select restructure but you can set it for less once you hit submit. It can't be more and we can't extend with the extend button. However the Spotrac Jason Better higher number confuses me. Is it a lazy simplification error by spotrac? @beachbum
