Where Do We Go From Here?

Ultimately, the QB at #1 is what matters.

Kendall Fuller is the player...So basically they got it done for a pair of 3rd rounders...

No doubt the Browns offered more...It just doesn't matter...

    Uhm yeah...I know. smh

Hopefully he's the most mentally tough QB ever drafted...If not...well we know the routine.

The name of this thread should probably be "The Never Ending Nightmare"...sad but true. I'm tellin ya right now, that Smith news is just another brutal gut punch.

I knew we wanted Jimmy Garoppolo. We did. It didn't matter. They took less, to avoid sending him to QB hell, because the Pats just assumed (rightfully) that the Browns would never be able to resign him, and that he could very likely come back to haunt them. Understandably, they didn't want to take that chance....I have no doubt that similar thoughts were coming from KC in regards to sending Smith here....

  5. My guess Smith wasn't gonna sign an extension and that's why no deal

  6. TopDawg Legend

My guess, the Browns track record is their own worst enemy at this point...

....because I believe the universe is working against the Browns, I'm fully expecting all of this: another failed draft attempt to find a QB. Followed by another looong season. Followed by another "parade". Followed by an amazing and unprecedented comeback into the NFL by Johnny Manziel, as he gets his life straightened out, focuses on football, and becomes the next great Steelers QB that leads them to another 4 SB wins...

Reports are that the Browns were the most aggressive team in the Alex Smith hunt, and they were prepared to pay handsomely with an extension, but were once again denied a quality quarterback...I wonder what happened this time? Another fax machine malfunction? Gremlins?

and then there's this from Cousins camp:

Before Browns fans draw the conclusion that Cousins will come here to save the day, he stressed in interviews with Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com and Jim Rome that his No. 1 priority is winning. "Is money a part of it? Sure. Is it the only thing? No," Cousins told Florio. "It's about winning, and that's what I want more than anything. So I'm going to be willing to make sacrifices or do what has to be done to make sure I'm in the best possible position to win, and that's what the focus is going to be."

Cousins echoed those sentiments on The Jim Rome Show in the afternoon, hours before news of the Alex Smith trade agreement broke.

I know some do, but I never honestly had hope that Cousins would consider Cleveland...I was banking on Smith because it wasn't really in his control. Cousins has options. He said he would consider Cleveland because he's smart. No need to piss off an entire region of football fans. Plus Cleveland will likely be right in there driving up the price... In reality, I feel certain there's absolutely no chance he's coming here...Jacksonville or Denver. Chalk it up.

Not so fun facts: The Redskins acquired Alex Smith for a 3rd round pick, and a player they spent a 3rd rd pick on last year. Up and coming CB Kendall Fuller...

The Browns were willing to give up a 2nd round pick and a 3rd rd pick for A.J. McCarron.....wtf?

It got Sashi fired, but his sabotage of that deal was probably among the best moves he made as a GM in Cleveland...

IDK SAS....I guess Teddy Bridgewater is one of the better options...That's pretty sad. I think I would rather have him than Drew Stanton or Chase Daniel, but I can't be certain. None of the three have ever proved anything at this level...

Probably the most insightful post you ever made, Stopper.
    • Smith just left the SECOND team where he was the starter and both teams drafted his replacement.
    • Washington MAY have guaranteed him (concurrent with the trade talks) that they would forego drafting a QB if he signs an extention.
    • Dorsey and the Browns have publicly comitted to fixing the QB problem LONG TERM.
So, he goes to the Redskins, is guaranteed to remain the starter with no mentoring duties - and - gets a boat load of cash.

Who is Denver giving up to pay him? Even if he only wants $22M a year to play for the Broncos, they would need to move around money to sign all their draft picks and they are losing 11 free agents..none of which are essential, but they will need to be replaced regardless. That's the thing that I see as a deterant to Denver. What is the bid draw here anyway...I understand the Browns are 1-31 the past two years, but the Broncos didn't light it up this year, they were 5-11. What is it about their roster that screams, I gotta go there? The aging RBs? The terrible O-Line? The first round QB they are sitting on from 2016? The rumor that their aging best receiver is on the trade block?

Honestly, if I'm Cousins, I would go to the team with Josh Gordon, the #1 and #4 overall draft pick and ANOTHER $80M in cap space AFTER they sign me. I would at least listen to their plan, if they say we will go get you Jarvis Landry and Terrelle Pryor, to go with Josh Gordon...I am thinking I could become a legend on a team that just was the historically worst team in the Leagues history.

Here is the Broncos potential Lineup:
    QB Cousins
    WR Emmanuel Sanders
    WR **Rookie Receiver
    WR Cody Latimer
    TE Virgil Green
    RB CJ Anderson
    RB Devontae Booker

    Browns potential Lineup:
    QB Kirk Cousins
    WR Josh Gordon
    WR Jarvis Landry
    WR Terrelle Pryor
    TE David Njoku
    RB Saquon Barkley
    RB Duke Johnson Jr

Now, being subjective, which team would YOU want to play on?

I'll take it one further, you would be playing with the Offensive coordinator that has his offenses consistently in the top 3-8 in the league. Forget about the Hue Jackson argument...a) he didn't have the lineup above and b) he no longer has anything to do with play calling.

I don't understand the Cousins love... he's an average NFL QB.

Have we just been so abused by this franchise that we're okay with adding an average player and heralding his arrival as this great turning point in the franchise? One in which we go from perennial laughing stock to Super Bowl contender? Will Kirk Cousins, Jarvis Landry, Terrelle Pryor, and a rookie running back get us to winning the AFC North?

The 2018 schedule is brutal. With an average QB like Cousins, the ceiling is 5-6 wins. With Baker Mayfield, it's 3-4 wins. With Josh Rosen or Lamar Jackson, it's 2-3 wins.

If we're okay shelling out huge sums of money for an average player, why don't we think about this a different way and actually sign elite players? DeMarcus Lawrence is a free agent - make him one of the highest paid defensive ends in the business. Lamarcus Joyner is a free agent - sign him to be the free safety we desperately need. Add Kyle Fuller at cornerback and Le'Veon Bell at running back. Throw in Sammy Watkins. Now you have a team that even DeShone Kizer could win eight games with.

You are all forgetting one key element here. The Chiefs are well aware of Dorsey's abilities and the Browns current situation. Why would they send a QB that can win during their current window to the AFC and to John Dorsey who wants nothing more than to put it to them in a playoff game...

How BAD would you look if you-Decide to get rid of your GM, Then trade your starting QB who just had you in the playoffs to a team that just went 1-31 and by the way hired the guy you fired, so you are trading that proven QB to the guy you fired. That QB has given you a winning season every year he has been in your organization....THEN, in 2018 you roll into that 1-31 Cleveland Browns stadium and lose to your former GM and QB? THEN, even worse, what happens if both teams still make the playoffs and you end up losing to them twice in a year...That 1-31 team from Ohio?

Sorry, but if I had 6 offers from teams (reportedly), Cleveland isn't at the top of my list to make a deal with. It is about what the potential outcome is in 2018, not doing right by the player.

  19. You listed 4 guys who may never wear a Browns uni

  20. If they felt that worried they would have kept him...Im sure they werent thinking about the 1-31 Browns as being their major threat when they have Pitt, NE, Jville etc to worry bout
