Almost put this one in the news section but wasnt sure it really belonged there not sure it really belongs here either but what the heck. We have all seen the outing people committing sexual assault and they have ranged from Hollywood Directors, Actors, Politicians, TV personalities and even Doctors. One of the biggest in the recent news is Larry Nasser who has been sentenced for up to 175 years for abusing over 150 women and girls. Logically the first step in many of these cases is what can be done legally and this is one of the cases where they were able to still nail the perpetrator for his actions. We have seen a few where they may not be able to get them legally so they have gone after them financially. Which again makes some sense if you cannot get them legally for one reason or another hit them where it hurts. My question is what do you do to the enablers. Yes nailing the one doing the abusing should be near the top of the list but what about those who allowed it to go on who allowed it to continue. We saw it at Penn State with Sandusky, we have seen it again with Nasser, and the number of people who knew what Weinstein was doing is in double digits. So when and what will happen to these people. When you drive the get away car fr a robbery and one of the goons inside the bank kills a hostage you get sentenced for the murder as well even though you never set foot in the bank. Should the law not go after the people who allow the abuse to continue? I know US gymnastics is being sued and so is the ranch where the team practiced but wouldnt it put more pressure on those with knowledge if they could face criminal charges too? Wouldnt they be more willing to put a stop to it if they could end up in jail? Sure some will cite they wanted to keep their jobs or they were just following order but at some point you have to do what is right. If your own moral fiber will not lead you to what is right maybe fear of repercussions that go beyond loosing your job will.
This whole #metoo movement turns victims into enablers (assuming the "victim's" story is true). If these victims were so damaged by the alledged perpitrator, then why didn't they go to someone in authority WHEN IT HAPPENED !!! Why wait for upwards of thirty years to go public? Even if their #metoo story is true, why allow the perpitrator to continue his actions unfettered?
Shame, carer damages, harrassment, actually doing something but nothing being done as was the case with this Dbag.
That is the thing some of them did go especially in the case of Nasser and nothing was done in fact some of the girls talked about how they were made to feel stupid because they questioned a Doctor. Also like Joe said shame plays a big part in in often times victims blame themselves for what happened.
These were very young girls who were DRIVEN to be great stars in their sport. I think part of the problem in all of this goes to their parents failure to properly protect their children. THe pressure directed at very young children by over-bearing coaches, trainers, and parents is significant. I know parents who when a kid is very young.....4-6 years old even are starting to program their kids to become great athletes. In my sports, baseball, this typecasting occurs later but I have been around most sports, and know the wrongs thrown at young children who I think are actually victims of how early they are identified and programmed to be somekind of special athletes. There are vultures in the coaching fraternity and sorority who know how to hook parents into believing that their kid is something special. 99% of which is bullshit and is only self serving on the coaches and trainers part. I also know this as a coach. I only coached any teams, girls or boys, where at least a couple parents attended our practices. And I REFUSED to take any of these kids home. It was up to parents to drop off and take home any children. Why? Because I would not be exposed to any accusations is why. Its too bad that it comes to that but that is the world that coaches live in. The innocent pat on the back or butt doesn't exist anymore. Everything is sexually implied.
to me METOO is a flavor of the week. Last year for the Oscars, they wanted more diverse nominations and more nominations for people of color and they got them. At the same time, many actresses have ranted and gone on and on about equal payment for men and woman's movie roles. the Mark Walhberg getting $1.5 million for the reshoots of "All the Money in the World," over Michelle Williams' $800 drew outrage so much so Marky Mark donated the money to METOO anyways. I'm sure they will all get more money than they need for making DEATH WISH or Ghostbusters 4 or the new Halloween remake of a remake of a classic. good for them. Oh Nicole Kidman ranted about women being more in the spotlight and doing more and giving them top jobs and top roles or whatever she was ranted about for 10 min on Sunday night. Then there's Natalie Portman taking a shot at the 5 men for the Directing Award at the Golden Globes 3 weeks ago and the push to recognize more female directors for major awards etc. Hey a women this week became the first one to get an Oscar nom for cinematography, so that's something cool ? Now it's METOO# about bringing to light the situation of past sexual abuse, harassment, flirting, attacks, inappropriate conduct, innuendo, and lord knows whatever else went down. anything else I'm missing ? I don't wanna offend anyone or piss off the masses. We have a shitload of problems in this country. Metoo is exposing one or more of them and that's great. I feel terrible for the victims here. The Doctor is the USA Gymnast ruined the lives of those woman for life. They can never get back what he did to them. I applaud the ones who faced him in court and spoke out against him. That's flat our courage. Harvey Weinstein is a gross disgusting perverted man. Kevin Spacey is just a gay man praying on other gay men or gay children. If the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences aka the Oscars kicked out Harvey, what about Spacey ? He's a member of the Academy too ? ...but what happens next week or next month that tops METOO and pushes it to the back of the line of social injustice ? It won't stay on the frontlines of battle forever. We had a school shooting in Kentucky this week. What about an airline crash? More deaths in the War overseas? Trump getting Impeached? The asteroids killing us all in 2 weeks, etc. The news and media are ABOUT THE NOW and not the past. Metoo will slip into the past eventually. It has brought a lot of bad things to light and that's great. I just don't think it will be enough to stop the problems from happening to someone else in the future regardless of new rules they put on movie sets about nude scenes, access from directors, agents etc.
What you're talking about would be more analagous to the bank robber calling an Uber and then charging the Uber drive with felony murder for picking the guy up. Trying to prosecute people who may or may not have been aware of something that may or may not have happened is a pretty slippery slope. Hearing about an allegation of abuse and ignoring it might be a dick move, but last I checked being a dick isn't against the law. And we have hearsay rules for a very good reason.
^^what about Paterno ? He didn't rape those boys, Sandusky did. He just failed to act on it upon discovering his best friend was a child molesting monster ! The PSU Administration and hierarchy all lost their jobs for failure to act. So you can't plead ignorance or you weren't there either.
Pretty sure a lot of these people were aware of what was going on. I think more than one girl mentioned going to their coach about it. I get hearsay and such but you know the old adage if there is smoke there is most likely fire. If nto that one then fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. People knw and did nothing making them just as guilty in my humble opinion.
This is happening north of your border too. And as always, there are 2 sides to every story. This is a dangerous precedent that is being set ... Christie Blatchford: What happened to Brown is fundamentally wrong. Every man in the world is now vulnerable I can think of almost nothing that requires less fortitude than accusing someone else of wrongdoing when your own face, name and identity are hidden For all the other moments #MeToo has wrought, the Patrick Brown story is seminal: A political leader is cut down like a sapling in the forest in a matter of hours, and none of his colleagues, in and outside of the Ontario Conservative party, and including the Ontario premier and the prime minister of Canada, have one word to say in the defence of fair play or the presumption of innocence. This — not the anonymous allegations of Brown’s accusers from the shadows — is what is shocking and disgraceful about this story. Kathleen Wynne spent nearly 18 minutes in front of the TV cameras at Queen’s Park Thursday. Only one journalist even bothered to ask her about due process. “These are allegations. He’s not had a chance to defend himself. Are you in any way concerned there is a bit of a public trial going on and is that fair?” the reporter asked. “Again, I’m not going to comment on the specifics of the situation,” Wynne replied. “I do think that it was brave for these young women to come forward. I think that it was a hard thing for them to do, but the point I’m making this morning is that — we always, there will always be due process and there should be due process and there is a legal process that has to be part of this…” And then she went on to urge Ontarians to get out their “own little flashlights” to “shine a light” into their own lives and to work together to “create safe spaces for everyone” — you know, except for the accused. As for the PM, from Davos, Justin Trudeau saluted the women “for their courage and their leadership.” Ahh, what a fine fellow he is: It wasn’t so long ago his heart went out to the little Toronto girl whose hijab had been cruelly slashed by a man in a hate crime. Er, wait. Andrea Horwath, the leader of Ontario’s New Democrats, was predictably even less circumspect. Saying she was “pretty disgusted” by the allegations, she too fielded a question about the dangers of a trial in the court of public opinion. “I really have two words about the justice system: Jian Ghomeshi,” she said, and went on to say that the “justice system is failing women … so let’s not pretend that we have a justice system that’s actually protecting women and making sure that women see justice.” News flash: The justice system isn’t meant to protect women, not to mention, not all of us need protecting. And Ghomeshi was acquitted in a fair trial, with rules and order and an appeal process, and he was acquitted not because the system failed women, but because his accusers failed women: They variously lied, colluded with one another or failed to tell the truth to police and prosecutors. Let it be perfectly clear. The point is not what Brown allegedly did. The point is not even Brown, though spare a minute for him, that poor, lonely castoff. No wonder he raced to hold that impromptu press conference Wednesday night; very likely, it will be the first and only opportunity he ever has to defend himself in public. That his senior staff deserted him immediately is no reflection on the strength, or lack of it, of the allegations made against him. Political staff are the human equivalents of blowflies; they’re the first to recognize a corpse. The point is that purely on the say-so of two women who claim he sexually assaulted them another prominent man has been ruined. One of his accusers alleges he asked her for oral sex (her words, according to Glen McGregor, the CTV reporter who broke the story Wednesday night), the other was a former staffer who alleges he plied her with alcohol, took her to his bedroom and kissed her, his erection against her, until she protested and demanded he drive her home, whereupon he ceased and did just that. Whatever the merits of their accusations — and how is anyone to know? — the mere act of making them to a journalist was enough. This is all it takes now. It means that every man in the world is vulnerable, not because he has necessarily misconducted himself, but because a woman may say he has. The truth of the alleged misconduct — did it happen? Were there mitigating circumstances? Does the accuser have motive to lie? — is incidental, if not irrelevant. If reporters are to be the new detectives, and media the modern court, then let there be some rules. Perhaps journalists should be required to video their interviews with accusers, as is the gold standard for police; the entire interviews can then be posted online, so that viewer/jurors know what questions were asked, and what weren’t, and see for themselves the body language of all. Perhaps “investigative” journalists should have to take the same courses cops do, in how to interview people without leading them or suggesting the answers they want. Those are facetious suggestions. Here’s one that isn’t: Reputable news organizations should swear off anonymous allegations of sexual misconduct unless there is a substantial body of evidence and an overwhelming public interest imperative. Despite the mountain of horse manure from the likes of Wynne, Horwath et al Thursday about the courage of the two women, I can think of almost nothing that requires less fortitude than accusing someone else of wrongdoing when your own face, name and identity are hidden. That this all comes five months before the next Ontario election means only one thing, as my wise muse put it: “#MeToo is shaking the foundations of our democracy,” because fundamental to a democracy is — was — the right to face your accuser and make full answer in defence.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/os...st-actress-award/ar-AAvaPIT?OCID=ansmsnnews11 Casey Affleck declines Oscar invite to award the Best Actress Oscar to not cause a distraction. It's sad he has to do this when what happened with him is his business that he took care of and paid for. This is not the same as a Weinstein or Louis CK victim. Affleck made a settlement with her 8 yrs ago. To me, it's unbelievable that he has to drop out to not face backlash over his allegations and the Metoo movement when the two are being lumped in together with everyone else. Is Affleck a kiddie attacker like Spacey or pervert like Weinstein ? No. Did he pull down his pants like Louis CK ? No. So he drops out to avoid a distraction over their movement and to not take anything away from the 5 nominees. That's sad man.
I agree that Affleck doesn't deserve the amount of hate leveled at him. My wife and I were talking yesterday about the entire Metoo movement and I actually was surprised how disgusted she was about the movement itself. She said something interesting to me and that was about how the "outrage" coming out now is a farce and that people have known for decades about the "casting couch" in Hollywood and how actresses and actors knew going in or found out very early on that to land a role they had to pleasure someone. And they went along with it willingly and actively. So now, when it got the media's attention and hence the public's these same actors and actresses are piling on in droves bringing up crap that had happened years before. I hope one thing comes out of this situation and that is that the notion of Hollywood actors and actresses are entitled to somekind of reverence as speaking as role models and leaders of this country should be smashed forever. I have long felt this way. Taking their say so on anything other than acting is ludicrous. Leonardo DeCapria talking about climate change is ridiculous. Cher pontificating about the evil of Donald Trump is hilarious. The "VIEW"'s cast of miscreants is a prime example of the lowest common denominator of human beings. How can anyone on that program be taken serious about anything? These cretins have no certification about anything other than memorization of lines on a show or a movie. 99% of them have no higher education and real world experience in anything beyond the most menial jobs. So why not just tune them out?
It is going to be an interesting world right now for men in the workplace isn't it? THey will not only have to be extremely careful about their actions around women but also their words, especially compliments. Telling a woman how nice she looks has to be out of bounds, right? Even being one on one with a woman leaves a guy open for potential complaints if a woman wants to pursue a sexual harassment complaint. Lets say a man get promoted for a job that a woman also is eligible for and the woman says that she was passed over because she wouldn't have sex with the man doing the promoting? How does the boss protect his own job and reputation when and if the shit hits the fan. I know that this kind of stuff has gone on for many many year but now with all of the publicity surrounding it, I think that companies are going to really be careful how they sort this all out. Typically most companies over-react to shit like this and end up the worse for wear. All that I know, is that I am glad that I am retired and do not have to cover my ass anymore.
AL - give your wife a big high 5 from me tonight ! Yes, the casting couch has been there and I'm sorry to the woman who had to suffer through that to get ahead in this world. My world is I work in an office, so I don't have to sleep with the boss to get ahead. I'm sure not every actress had to sleep with someone to get ahead, but many did. When you got that first acting check was it worth it ? When you get a second and third acting job, was it worth it then ? You reap what you sow. You start banging every director for a part and word gets around you will sleep with anyone for a role. you made that bed. Now it's "oh whoa is me and I want my lawyer and $50 mil ? " Although, it has been discussed before on why wait till years later to come forward, I still question Anthony Rapp for coming forward now when he's 45 over Kevin Spacey. If you're not out to ruin him or make a quick buck, why on an ordinary day in the fall did you come out with a story of when you were 14 and Spacey took you to a bedroom at a party? Do you not like House of Cards? Did he turn you down for a role? What was it? How do you keep a secret that big for so long? Why ruin him now and not on Oscar night when he won 2 Oscars? Sadly over the weekend woman are now accusing magician David Copperfield of sexual misconduct. This is not act either. I could go on about MeToo and the movements of "women in power" from the ramblings of the 2 speeches by Nicole Kidman this year. To me an award speech is to thank the people who got you there to win that award. Others like Kidman and Francis McDormand use their speeches to rant and rave about whatever movement they feel is needed. Last year - they needed more nominations of color people. Now it's Me Too. Jessica Chastain wants equal pay for women's roles vs the men. Natalie Portman wants more woman up for best Director when none were nominated at the Golden Globes. Is anyone happy anymore? Might as rant about poverty and crime and homelessness. Nope. Not matters that matter. Nah. Women directors. Women in power. Oh btw - the director of Lady Bird-Greta Gerwig, who became the first woman to get an Best Director Oscar Nomination in her first Directorial debut, is now being accused of plagiarism for the movie ! There is a movie that is a carbon copy of Lady Bird called "Real Woman have Curves." Where the hell is the backlash on this ? Where is Natalie Portman now ? Yeah typical liberal Hollywood. No one of fame is safe. Every skank in the world can now come forward and say "yeah he grabbed my ass in college 30 yrs ago." Run and hide celebs, run and hide.
Brie Larson, the Oscar Winner, just handed him his Oscar and not hugged him etc over what he was accused of. Then when they walked off stage, she stood a little behind him when most presenters and winners walk over together and sometimes arm in arm. Hey Brie - this is none of your business really. He's a grown man and he handled his business. You had to take it upon yourself to act out accordingly on his Oscar moment ? Wow. Hope you live a Saintly life in a glass house.
A really good way to avoid accusation... don't do/say anything that could be taken in a sexual way if you didn't mean it that way. Be respectful. If you did mean "it" that way, I hope you gambled well and received the reciprocation you wanted for taking said action. If you did say or do something that made someone uncomfortable, own up to it and apologize. Be mindful. You never know what might "trigger" something in others. I'm talking about REAL TRIGGERS, not some metaphor about how "gingers" lead to thinking about clowns that lead to whatever childhood bogeyman you dragged into your adult being. Men have had it "their way" forever and now the recent power struggle shows that men are "losing power" and it is going directly into the hands of minorities (scary shit). Nothing scares white men in power more than losing power, position and/or influence, because without it, they are forced to play on a level playing ground. "Level Ground"... a land unfamiliar that presents a foreboding air of doom to the tripodists of our Western society. I've been on the planet for nearly 50 years, have had over 40 sexual partners and ZERO accusations. And I did that with ease... the ZERO accusations part, I mean, the other two weren't so easy. Even the justice system is built to protect... the accused. Not saying its wrong... just a fact. So consider bringing a complaint into a system that already has "you", the plaintiff, at a disadvantage. See the reason behind all the silence now? Not done yet. Plus, there's the history of sexism, slut shaming, honor killings, he said/she said, males' opinions bearing more weight than "hysterical/emotional" females, etc. Then there's the MONEY/STAR POWER factor, where "regular" people have to battle the celebritè brigade and their blue-chip attorneys. Then there's the other POWER factors (boss/subordinate, career, etc). And some people wonder why all the backlash all of a sudden. Way overdue, guey. Also remember, you (most on this site) are probably seeing this event through a man's eyes, so your experience/perspective will be different than a lot of women's views. Court of public opinion is a bit different though. Tough stains, no doubt. Watching these people take the hits they deserve is a good thing and I'm glad that victims feel they have a voice that can finally be heard. Its about fucking time. Don't like it? Don't rape. Don't get "handsy". Learn to take "No" graciously. Even if you're in mid-stroke, a person can change their mind and that notion should be respected without question and/or manipulation. This shit should be taught in elementary schools... but leave out the "mid-stroke" stuff, of course. Its funny to watch men squirm and wriggle over this and actually feel scared about this "pro-awareness" movement. #VaginaDentata
Sadly some male actors are saying they were a victim too like Terry Crews and others. No one is safe from being attacked, groped, flirted on, hit on or worse.
Firehalo, the thing that should scare a lot of men in the workplace is now that everyone is sympathetic to this movement, women could make false accusations at work to get a payday. Companies settle these harassment suits with women all the time. Men might become collateral damage for a woman to get a new car or money just to spend. This definitely has a serious potential for abuse of men in general just for financial gain.
