Onside kick was the absolute right call. The issue was the crappy kick and penalty for illegal touching. They needed to get it at the 2nd level.

With an onside you can get the ball back right away. You have to go 3 and out either way. The only thing you have to do is not kick so bad an onside kick that 3 and out means FG try. Normally you should be able to kick a FG off a recovered onside kick after going 3 and out.
