There's a whole shitload of QBs who have thrown for TDs in the Super Bowl. Not only that... I could have hit Plaxico with a pass as wide open as he was. I used to have pride in the fact that so many Steelers were in the Super Bowl and believed they deserved to be in. Your argument and points make their induction much less of a feat and a source of pride. I have always understood nothing is "perfect" and politics enter into some who get in, but it just irks me how average or slightly above average can get you assumed as a sure fire HOFer now. There was a time when many argued against Swann, Stallworth and Bradshaw. Today if they played they would be sure fire HOFers under the standards that are now being set. Why isn't Troy Brown a sure fire HOFer, but Eli is? I guess if you are a QB you become immediately greater is truly the answer.
That's the truth. They stick in the minds of fans and media more than others. That goes for losses too.
You're sort of missing my point Fire. I'm not complaining about who is and who isn't in the HOF. I'm complaining about why are certain players considered by basically everyone sure fire HOFers when IMHO they don't deserve to be considered obvious HOFers. I understand your point, being the more the merrier aspect. That's not really the way it's been presented though.
Not that I think Eli is a Dan Marino or Tom Brady, he is better than a lot of QBs already in. Although his "greatness" doesn't equate to much, his career is solid and I say he is a lock. And I think all the Mannings are overrated.
I couldn't agree more with these statements. I also agree there are others in the HOF who don't belong. I think our thoughts differ on the from here point. You're feelings are keep f'ng it up, while I believe even if you can't remove the mistakes, quit making more. Correct me if I'm wrong. Life isn't fair, but shouldn't we strive to stop making the same mistakes. Not, since we have made them in the past... let's make every mistake possible?
It becomes a distortion of truth or a mirage... guess that can go both ways, depending on your vantage point.
Didn’t read thru all posts thoroughly but anyone mention Lynn Swann and Stallworth, they averaged 40 catches per year over their careers. Also may I introduce Philip Rivers into the Benny boy and Eli comparison. I think he has better stats than both. Please advise
Does Lynn Swann and John Stallworth have better stats than the worst WR in the HoF? Yes? Then they are welcome to reside there. Phillip Rivers deserves to be in the HoF. He is remarkably better than Joe Namath was.
When Howie Long made the HoF that took some of luster away for me In what the HoF is supposed to be. Sorry I know someone in here will defend him but the guy had 2-3 good (not even very good) years.
Part of what gets you into the HOF is an iconic moment something that last forever. If ou happen to do it on the big stage all the more that it gets you to the hall. Face facts Namath is because of the guarantee and then backing it up. When Eli stopped the evil empire he had that iconic moment both in being the QB of the team that stopped the Evil empire and in that one pass play where he hit David Tyree. Was it a fluke catch? Yes but it got him that iconic moment because 1) he threw the pass and 2) he pulled off Houdini like magic to escape what should have been a sack to even throw the pass. I do not think you have to be the absolute best to be a HOFer if you did the hall would be very very empty. I think you have to be one of the best for sure but does that mean top 3? Top 5? Top 10? You say that Eli and Ben are not top but how many teams wish they had either of them for the entire career? Most likely the bulk of the league wishes they had one of those 2 guys for an entire career. Some may not like it but to me part of being a HOFer is longevity (one of the reasons I dont agree with Davis or Warner in the hall). both guys have held their positions for some time. And while on that note Eli's consecutive games starting streak is impressive (and we all know it should still be going). Not missing games is part of what makes you a HOFer and for a QB not to miss when they take some of the hits they take its impressive.
Absolute best? NO... But you should be in the top 10 percent at your position during your time of play. At no time has Eli been in that category. There are approximately 700 starters in any given year in the NFL. Approximately 6 players make it per year. You think it's too much to ask to require that you rank in the top 10 percent at your position during your playing time? The only true way to measure a player is by comparing him to his contemporaries. Not someone who played when they weren't even a thought in their daddy's eyes. Times change, rules change, coaches change and Qbs have a coach talking to them thru their helmet until 15 seconds are left on the play clock. Talk about an advantage. It's impossible to realistically compare times. IMHO
I know passer rating is not the end all be all, but I don't see how an 83.5 career Eli Manning passer rating is HOF material. Let me put it this way, I understand who gets in is somewhat era-specific to how the game was played at certain times in history, the rules of the day, what metrics define greatness in your time, and what not. Well, one of the big metrics used in this day and age to evaluate a QB's greatness is QB Rating. If a QB has a low or very average QB Rating then he better be making up for that with something special in another area or multiple areas. In an era built for offense, and pinball type quarterback offensive stats and efficiency, Eli doesn't cut the HOF mustard imo. I'm not saying he isn't close or in the discussion, but he fails to make the cut imo. However, this is where the popularity portion via name recognition and super bowl wins will kick in and put him over the top. I don't agree it should, but it will. By letting him in, it lowers the bar. With Eli, he simply doesn't imo have enough "special" to make up for the statistical downside of his candidacy, except for the two super bowl wins. Is that enough? I say no. I think if we are going to say Big Ben is a HOFer but that coming to that conclusion requires debate, then Eli is simply not by comparison HOF worthy. Eli, statistically speaking, has been in the "better than average to good" range (For His Time), whereas Big Ben has been "good to very good" or "very good to great" range. I also never thought Eli passed the "eye test" for greatness either. I don't see "greatness" when I watch him play. I agree with those supposing his defense was more instrumental in getting him rings. Without Eli Manning's rings, he would be considered great only by name recognition, and his HOF worthiness would not even make for a serious discussion. If super bowl wins are the main argument for Eli Manning's entry into the HOF, I would add that Eli never carried his team like Big Ben did in the playoffs, at times. Just my opinion.
Ben Roethlisberger is getting in. No doubt. Unless he boneheads his way out of it. I don't see greatness in several residents in the HoF. Some are undeniably great, others... not so much. Wanna talk about Eli's passer rating? Look at Namath. Wanna compare Eli to Big Ben? Compare Namath to Hadl. 1 Super Bowl is the difference. And JN was cocky about it prior to the game. A WWE moment. Really, that was the reason? When Namath played in the AFL, he was outstanding, so that helps his status for the sake of argument. But when the 2 leagues merged and he faced other and probably better overall football players, his "greatness" plummeted. He was Average Joe. I'm not saying Namath doesn't deserve to be in the HoF, he does. But if anyone comes along with better numbers and at least equal accomplishments, they should get in too. For some reason, people start drawing imaginary barriers and the goalposts move all over the place on this topic so fuck it, if your stats are better than the lowest guy in at the respective position... BOOM, you're IN too! #ExpandTheHoF
IMO Eli has done more than enough to get into the HoF, in addition he’s always been a good teammate, has never thrown any teammate or coach under the bus, etc. etc. part of getting into the HoF should be a measure of ur character, which brings me to T Owens, don’t care what stats he has, awful character and wouldn’t mind at all if he never got in. Thank You
didn't Eli pull a John Elway and boycott the team that was going to draft him (SD) and force a trade to NY? That's not a good anything to me. More like a dick.
