moving on... Very realistic possibility here....I think this is about the ONLY way we'll see the Browns pass on QB at #1...
Or sign Cousins to 4-5 years after promising him no QB this year so that he'd take the dump truck full of money......
Connor Williams is dropping like a rock. Can't see him going Top 15, wouldn't be shocked if he fell out of the first round. Scouts think his future is guard.
Friction in NE...why the rush w Dorsey...Caserio could have come home and brought McDaniels w him smh
I think everyone is focused on the QB1 a little too much. What if... The Browns have 4 prospective franchise guys rated well beyond any other player in this draft.... Wait for it.... And none of them are QBs? They may be getting ready for a free agency that can produce a starter at the QB position knowing they can get not one, but two franchise changing players in the top 4.... THAT would change the stars of this franchise in a more positive way, as well as in the shorter term, than taking a risky chance on a QB at #1 simply because that is what teams do. Now all of that changes if Keenum and Cousins are both re-signed prior to free agency and Alex Smith isn't available via trade....but what if they do land one of those three? I have the following ranked ahead of all QBs (including Mayfield) at the moment and I haven't even come close to finishing evaluations... Minkah Fitzpatrick Saquon Barkley Derwin James Bradley Chubb And I'm damn close to declaring Roquon Smith a top five talent lock.. I already have him ahead of all QBs and believe he can also be a franchise player. Some team will get a steal in the teens. I just can't imagine a universe where: #1 (any QB) #4 BPA Would HELP the Browns become relevant more than Kirk Cousins, Case Keenum or Alex Smith AND #1 BPA #4 BPA Into the future and MOST ESPECIALLY in 2018...we are 1-31 folks, we need a HUGE leap in 2018, not a 3 win improvement waiting on yet another rookie QB to develop.
I'm still confused on all the McDaniels love, he was an EPIC train wreck his first time around, what makes anyone think he's learned his lesson? He's another Hue, will want complete control of, offense, HC duties AND roster say...Complete control. He can't handle that workload and will fail again.
If you can get a stud FA QB then go ahead and pass on QB at #1. Garrett was the first time the modern Browns passed on an early QB for a perceived better talent elsewhere. And the year before they passed on Wentz. All other times the Browns drafted early the top QBs were already taken or they were none rated highly. Sometimes they got an alternative later (hello picks #22). The Browns though can't simply just pass on QB here just because a half dozen or more players are higher than their top ranked 1. That isn't enough of a drop to go away from a possible franchise stabilizer and if you miss your top option after it's a decent bit lower then you really aren't gonna like your backup options.
I wonder if the Browns should even trust their QB evaluations. Maybe the Browns can actually be QB gurus and the problem is they can't make a competent player out of a bad prospect. I know it sounds like a stupid idea and they already tried and ignored it with Bridgewater but get someone else to scout and find the #1 QB for you. Pay them a nice sum and offer them incentives to do their best job. Like bonuses tied to that player's accomplishments over so many years. I say this because I sometimes hear stuff like "what if the Browns think none of the QBs are good" (that's not a shot at you Irish. You just reminded me of it.). Well I personally wouldn't trust their evaluations at face value considering their track record. I would still take one #1 if a FA isn't found and like my odds better with outside help. It's nothing shameful. Teams outsource scouting all the time. This is just high profile. Why let such a major decision be made outside the organization? Well why let such a major decision be made by incompetent QB scouts inside it?
Mike McGlinchey, then. Or even Nelson, the guard. 1 (CLE): Josh Rosen 2 (NYG): Sam Darnold 3 (IND): <insert offensive lineman here> 4 (CLE): Saquon Barkley
Hue. Jackson. Didn't. Want. Carson. Wentz. Also, even if the F/O forced the issue and put Wentz on this team, I guarantee 10,000 times over that he would have been ruined by Hue the same way Kizer was.
I don't believe they did, otherwise they wouldn't have hired John Dorsey who's first major move (besides cutting Britt) was signing another well-respected talent evaluator in Alonzo Highsmith. Sashi Brown and Hue Jackson passed on a number of quality guys. The onus on Dorsey is to get that choice right this time. I suggested in a "fix the Browns" post a while back they ought to outsource their scouting to Scot McCloughan's firm. Again, that was a great idea with the analytics-heavy F/O. They've since in-sourced with Dorsey and Highsmith. There was even a rumor floating around that Dorsey could still fire the entire scouting department in Cleveland. I believe those contacts typically run through February/March and just like the Browns did when Jackson/Sashi took over, they could let those expiring contracts walks.
#KillingTheNarrative Browns *Never* Had a Shot at Garappolo Although, while we're on the topic... this guy is still available:
True, it's a skewed a bit in favor of Garappolo since he stepped in his first game and threw a TD. In five starts with the 49ers: 67.1% completion, 1,542 yards, 6:5 TD/INT ratio, 94.0 QB rating
Actually, it makes it appear that Colin was a superior quarterback to Jimmy G during that stretch. That's just not accurate. I'd have to go back and look at the game logs but I believe Kaep only won 1 game that season, only had 1 touchdown in the 4th quarter with the game on the line (same one as the win) and had several of those stats come at a time when the game was no longer in play. That's off of memory from a couple years ago so it may be off some, but Kaep was not playing good football to finish out his stint in San Fran. I know you have stated before that you are not on board with Jimmy and you think he's extremely overvalued, but I'm on the other end of the discussion. He was my top rated passer in that draft class and he has done nothing so far in his career to make me second guess that assessment.
All right, Jimmy went 5-0 and Kaepernick went 1-4 in his. I would argue two bigger reasons - head coach/coordinator and defensive play. Chip Kelly's offense was poor and he was a bad head coach. Kyle Shannahan is a great offensive coordinator and is proving to be a very good head coach. During Kaep's five games, the 49ers defense surrendered 28.2 PPG. During Garoppolo's five games, the defense surrendered 19.8 PPG. Kelly's offense: 19.8 PPG and Shannahan's offense: 28.8. With Shannahan's offense, even with the 2016 49ers defense, they would on paper go 5-0. With Chip Kelly's offense and the 2017 49ers defense, they would go .500.
