Third down conversion rate for draft eligible QB's this season: Third and long (7+ yards, passing-only):
Mason's been sitting at the top of my quarterback board for a little while now (over a month). If he had just a touch more sizzle on his arm I don't think there would be much room for someone to pass him up down the stretch.
SAS' QB Rankings (don't @ me): 1. Baker Mayfield 2. What's it matter... you lost Baker Mayfield 3. Lamar Jackson 4. Josh Rosen 5. I really can't believe they passed up on Baker Mayfield
^^^^^^^^^^ That's only a little bit joking, that's the messed up part. I want nothing to do with Sam Darnold and like Kizer before him, Josh Allen received an "undraftable" grade from me. Again, unless you're converting him to TE at the next level.
There are a lot of comparable between Allen and Kizer, but Josh is a more refined quarterback in many aspects of his game. The one comp between the two that is alarming is the lack of accuracy. You cannot be a professional quarterback without being consistent, which means you have to be able to throw the ball accurately, consistently. Allen will get over-drafted. Hackenberg is the most recent reminder of the way GMs, scouts and analysts will always over value certain intangibles to the point of blinding themselves to obvious truths.
Agree to disagree, I guess. Kizer's accuracy was light-years ahead of Allen's. Kizer's inconsistent. Allen's inaccurate.
We can agree to disagree on that. My thoughts on it - Kizer scored miserably in anticipation accuracy and that carried over to his pro game. They are both spot throwers, but Allen has the ability to adjust his spot more so than Kizer had shown entering the draft.
On the 1st throw...its a check down and the RB doesnt have great ball skills...yes its a little high but that RB has some fault as well....the 2nd throw, the nickel DB has outside leverage and the WR doesnt do him any favors giving him a 2 way go and presses straight up the field while the DB is sitting on the sticks speed cut route....he is a little late but he probably should have checked to a quick slant w that initial pre snap read
He left his feet unnecessarily and pushed the ball away from the back. The running back should have held a cleaner line and made it easier for him, but it's a 7 yard throw to a target with no immediate threat of interference. A throw that he should have been in motion to make when he was turning which shows a lack of situational awareness. The bigger issues would be staring down the receiver then firing the ball in a spot that doesn't lead him away from the defense. It's a spot throw, to the wrong spot, with no anticipation or intent to throw before the break and no recognition of the situation.
No doubt...Im not saying at all Allen isnt at fault...his technique is bad on the 1st check down and he misses inside on the speed cut...I just think the 2nd throw could have been a pre snap read check to a better route
I don't disagree that this is an option that was most likely available, but the window for the completion is there if Allen leads the receiver away from the defender out of the break.
