Where Do We Go From Here?

I've only used the ignore button a couple of times...due to be trolled once and another on an actual Browns fan who was incessantly posting the same exact drivel day after day after day...when I see there are "new" posts and it is the same shit over and over, it got so old to the point I hit ignore for a couple of days...problem is, when others engage with the poster you are totally lost in the conversation, so it's a negative impact act anyway. But to call someone a coward for using it, well, that just shows your ignorance. If you are ignorant and willing to make bold statements on this subject, what credibility do you have on any other subject?

As for Stopper, I don't ignore him...in fact, I have had intelligible conversations with him here and there. It's his vague and negative hue on all things Browns that have made him the punching bag that you see today. There isn't a positive idea to be had, only calling out everything that goes wrong...here's the problem with that, WE ALL LIVE THROUGH WHAT IS GOING WRONG, commenting on it once and moving on is one thing, but for that to be your lot in life...well, I would suggest becoming a fan of another team and move on from these boards. There are enough actual fans that can have a conversation about the negatives to keep that conversation going.

I am probably one of the more optimistic fans on these boards, and even I have been taken to the depths of despair this season. Come back here when the Bears have been through what we have been through over the past two decades and we can talk...You have no inkling of what we deal with as a fanbase, don't pretend a couple of 3-6 win seasons have brought you to our level of insanity. Trust me, when/if you ever experience this (and you have the balls to stick through it) you will hang on to ANY sense of hope for the future, whether that is the following week or season or player or coach or GM or owner or ANYTHING that is different that may make a difference in the overall scheme of things.

Now, if you have anything else to talk about other than calling our posters cowards, please continue..

    Why can't I like this 1000 times?

Its Friday, but it sure looks like someone has a case of the "Mondays".

  4. All I can say is that I read this board on a daily basis and I get sick of watching one guy act like he knows something when his history says he don't know shit and another guy talk out both sides of his ass when he occasionally drops in to troll one of our own because he got put on ignore. And I do believe if someone said they had a case of the Mondays where I work they would get their ass kicked.

Back to our regularly scheduled program . . .

There's been a lot of chatter on here about bringing in Alex Smith as the veteran QB. The last time I looked, he's still under contract in KC for 2018.

    ???

Yes. The idea is that Dorsey might trade for him, as he did when he first took over in KC...The Chiefs drafted Maholmes last year, and I think they are ready to see him play anyway...

It makes sense. We would get the ideal bridge QB for a year to kinda show the ropes to whomever we draft....

It could also prove to be the most realistic possibility of getting a veteran in Cleveland. If KC doesn't get a better offer, then he will be shipped to Cleveland. Otherwise, you aren't just competing with the money aspect of free agency, but also the human aspect. If a player refuses to come, there isn't anything an agent can do about it. With that year left on Smith's contract (barring a no trade clause, which I highly doubt he has), it would be a clean way of getting a competent veteran in here.

But, aren't you assuming KC would be willing to trade him?

  9. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

IDK. Why would a team trade the starting QB who just lead them to a division title? Even with an unproven backup already in the fold. Why wouldn't they want to keep Smith just in case Maholmes turns out to be another Kizer?

    Adding to that ^^^^^;

The only thing we have to trade is draft picks. We still need some starting quality position players and competent depth on the roster.

We'd have to offer one of our second round picks (preferably Texans or Eagles) and a conditional pick in 2019 - third round with potential for a second based on wins, play time, etc. It's comparable to the deal that got Smith to KC in the first place.

Problem - Smith is currently enjoying a career season and is one of the Top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL. KC knows this and has the luxury of (1) demanding a king's random, or (2) sticking with him in 2018 and giving Mahomes more maturation. Mahomes will start against Denver - still a top tier defense - so his success or failure will likely determine how willing KC is to move on from Smith in the offseason.

I just don't see KC being willing to trade him.

The train of thought is that they are happy with the progression of the rookie and would want him to start in 2018. Thus, with only one year left on Smith's contract, they would be able to get another piece for the roster to help him succeed before Smith leaves without any compensation whatsoever, as well as relieving $17M in cap space. They currently are over about $2.6M on the cap, so SOMETHING must be done to relieve that cap situation. First, the cap will rise, so, the reality is they are probably closer to about $7-8M under the cap for 2018...BUT, that doesn't include anything they want to do in free agency and signing their 2018 draft class. The draft class will probably account for the majority of the cap space cleared by a cap increase...

So, in essence, if they are resigned to the fact Smith won't be in KC in 2019, and are expecting to start Mahommes regardless...a second round draft pick for compensation on a 35 year old QB with only one year left on his contract will most likely look pretty damn good.

Fair points. I just don't see it happening.

Notes to the above...There are some major differences in the two trade situations...

    1) Smith was 30 at the time of this trade, he is 34 now
    2) He had two years left on his contract at the time of the trade, he currently only has one left

These are some major negotiating points as to why the Eagles pick should be enough to make this happen. I don't know another team that will want to spend a second round pick on a one year QB that will be 35 at the start of the season.

admittedly, that is the HUGE hurdle to overcome. The Chiefs must have the "want" in there for anything to happen. The cap space issue is why I believe they will be motivated to make a move and the main reason I believe they traded up for Mahomes in the 2017 draft. If Mahomes has progressed, then I don't see how they DON'T make a move this off season. They simply need more cap space to maintain their level of play in 2018. Moving Smith would instantly give them what they need.

There are also 51 other ways to get cap space without giving up your starting, division winning QB and rolling with an unproven youngster.

You can put this under the "why to" and also under the "why not to" columns -

And just real quickly on what was happening in here earlier -

The ignore feature is something that I went back and forth on for a very long time. I initially did not want it because I didn't want to see it stifle conversation. However, after having it for several months now I have noticed that there is no change in productive conversation, but there has been a decrease in useless back and forth that escalates into arguments that no one wants to read or be a part of.

It was by far the most requested addition to the forums but it has been used very little with only 7 users currently being ignored (I can't see who is doing the ignoring, just who is getting the 'hush', lol).

The simple ability to have the option seems to be just as much of a benefit as actually using it.
