Where Do We Go From Here?

Actually, I took Jimmy's pronouncement as a "the GM is going to pick a QB".

I feel like that was already 100% going to happen. Just shifts from perhaps a more analytical-based approach (Mayfield/Jackson) to traditional football guy approach (Rosen/Darnold/Allen).

Hue's media mouthpiece is being very vocal today about Hue wanting Garappolo at the trade deadline and not McCarron. If John Dorsey is the guy, I would expect Alex Smith to be wearing orange and brown this time in March.

I think Hue's media mouth is just as good as Hue when it comes to the "no, no, no... I wanted the other guy" kind of thing.
I hope this is right, but if this was an internal power struggle that Jackson won out on then we should consider the chance that Hue also got his way with regards to wanting more input on shaping the roster.

I'm not saying that's the case, but it should be considered a real possibility.
I always felt that the Browns were building the roster, adding picks and throwing darts at lesser valued quarterbacks to see if they could hit on one. This was the class that seemed to make the most sense with how Cleveland has been trending since this new office took over.

Now, that's pretty much out the window and all bets are off until we find out who the GM is, how much Hue will be involved and if they are still willing to go after McCarron. If they do take a look at making a move for A.J., then we can call 'bullshit' on Hue wanting JG and get a better sense of what really might be happening leading up to the draft in regards to how much sway Jackson will hold in the selection process.

And for the record - I'm not dooming and glooming here. I'm simply applying all of the available information from the past two years and applying it to what happened today.

It's also been leaked that Hue Jackson prefers Josh Rosen. A "traditional football GM" is going to go with the prototype at #1 overall (6'4" 220, pocket, plus-arm), meaning either Rosen or Darnold (who should return to school for another season).

    Link.

Although, Miller does say the same source (has to be on Hue's staff) believed they were going to be fired. They also had the emails released after the botched McCarron trade from one of Hue's coaches who shared the same sentiment - outrage at Sashi Brown and the feeling they were going to be fired at the season's end.

Just gonna have more of the same by just hiring a GM. It's just a battle for Haslam's ear. They need to hire a superior to the both of them to settle the squabbles and remove Jerry Jones/Al Davis..........errrr....Jimmy Haslam from having any knee-jerk input or decision making when it come to this team's roster.

I hear Haslam is out scouring the city for homeless folks to help decide on the next QB.

    Disgusting.

This is the guy who just "won" the power struggle:

    Wait... his offense, right?

At least we finally agree on something, Hue.

I bet Ray Horton is furious rn.

Imagine what Njoku, Gordon, Johnson, Kizer, etc. will think once they hear this sound bite.

I don't think it's a secret...Rookie QB and Rookie TE, to go with a bunch of second year players...I might have been the only one that thought this team had a chance to be good...

  11. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

Disagree, buddy. I thought they had the potential to get near .500 with better QB play. And that's not a knock on Kizer, per se... he simply wasn't ready. Hue's the one who stuck him in the lineup without appropriate prep, development, or scheme to help him once the decision was made.

Great article - basically my thoughts:

John Dorsey's last job was similar to our situation. Andy Reid was hired before he was in 2013, although, they were both hired in 2013. But, I don't think this will deter a GM that will be licking his chops at both the salary cap availability and draft picks. If they have ANY confidence in themselves, this job will be extremely inviting.

Actually, I see a FOOTBALL GM that will come in and fill the empty shelves with players that can help this team win.

Don't pencil in Rosen at #1 just yet...or a QB at all for that matter.

If Dorsey really does come in, their quick turn around was based on bringing in a veteran QB. He could be our savior, to anyone wanting to acquire Kirk Cousins. Whomever is brought in, I get the feeling Haslem wants a 2018 fix, not a 2 or 3 year "plan". A fix does not constitute relying on a rookie QB, it will absolutely call for a veteran signal caller.

In order to lure Cousins here, I can see them dangling those draft picks and telling Cousins, how would you like to run an offense with:

Joe Thomas protecting your blind side and stellar line mates to help him
Josh Gordon, manchild, to throw the ball to
Young up and comers in Corey Coleman and David Njoku

AND, the additions of the best RB in the draft at #1 overall and the best WR in the draft at #7 overall....

That would seem pretty enticing, I would think...

Especially after a shiny new Offensive Coordinator is hired to run the show. I think that Hue already hinted that it will be in the plan for early this off season.

Hell, how about a scenario in which we sign Cousins...

Then on draft day, trade down from #1 to #2, so that Denver can't leap frog the giants in order to get their QB. Get #2 and a 2019 2nd round draft pick and get your #1 choice anyway...

Come away entering the 2018 season with:

2019 2nd round draft pick from NYG
    Kirk Cousins
#2 (Giants) overall Saquon Barkley RB Penn State
#6 (Texans) overall Minkah Fitzpatrick FS Alabama (sorry Kirk, can't pass up this talent, which is the missing link to a championship caliber defense)
#21 (Bills) overall **TRADE** Browns trade #33 and #65 Courtland Sutton WR SMU
#39 (Texans) overall Iman Marshall CB USC
#56 Browns trade #62 (Eagles) and #119 (Panthers) Equanimious St. Brown WR Notre Dame

Beyond the complication of a franchise-defining QB wanting to come to Cleveland with the dysfunction in the front office and uncertainty around a (potentially) lame duck head coach... we're talking about these football "traditionalists" who are known to have massive egos.

A guy like Dorsey with all that cap capital to spend would almost certainly want to get "his guy" and not someone from another franchise/GM.

I think the bigger consideration will be whether or not a quarterback wants to come and play for Hue Jackson.

Anyone want to make an argument for why they would?

You're forgetting the "not with this coach" portion of my crystal ball. Unless the new HC is Gregg Williams, there will be no continuity and there is going to be a new system for both X's and O's and turnover of the roster which starts a new 2-3 year window before Haslam cans the next guy.

Glad that you're optimistic, Irish. Somebody has to be. Me......I have a bad feeling that we haven't hit the bottom of the barrel yet and I truly can't imagine anything worse than Hue and 0-16. But, hey.....c'mon, this is the Browns. If they can't find a way to be the worst of all time, then nobody can.

I'm with you on this, Tim. If Hue gets the boot after the season.......it's going to be pure upheaval with this team. Depends on who the new HC and OC are and how big a dump truck full of money the QB wants to overlook how badly things are run in Cleveland.
