Where Do We Go From Here?

They need to pull the trigger finally, I agree... but the other component to this is Hue Jackson.

Has he done anything yet to inspire any confidence in anyone that he has a clue he knows what he's doing with respect to the QB position? I realize I'm hard on Kizer (rightfully so) but I wouldn't have to be if Hue had done the right thing and kept him on the bench.

Hue has wanted: Jared Goff (couldn't have him), Bob Griffin, Kevin Hogan, DeShone Kizer, A.J. McCarron

Hue has said no to: Carson Wentz, Deshaun Watson, Cody Kessler, Josh McCown, Brock Osweiler

During the BYE week, Hue was going directly to the owner to demand the franchise unload a haul of picks (FWIW... #33 and #65 = 845 points... that's nearly enough to get to #20 overall - 850 points) for A.J. McCarron and quit on DeShone Kizer.

If this F/O does what it should and drafts Baker Mayfield at #1 overall... do we believe Hue Jackson will do right by him?

Will he continue to ride out Kizer, insisting that Mayfield "isn't ready" despite starting Kizer when he clearly wasn't and Mayfield is exponentially more talented than DeShone? Will he start him and have him throwing it 40+ times a game as he did with Kizer? Will he continue to abandon/ignore the running game to help his rookie QB?

I'm extremely worried the Browns screw it up and pass on Mayfield... but I'm almost as worried that Hue Jackson screws it up if we do take him.

    agreed on both counts...

It looks like we will have two top 5 picks. Could we really screw that up? Nevermind, I know......Any love at all for Rosen? I've heard many say he's the most "pro ready"...

How can Hue possibly survive? I think he's done, unless we somehow go on a little win streak....what are the odds of that?

Rosen entered the year as my No. 1 QB (Rosen, Mayfield, Jackson) but some inconsistency as well as lingering injury doubts have knocked him down to No. 2 or No. 3 for me.

He's easily the best pure-passer in the entire class and has a natural throwing motion and is more of a typical QB prospect (6'4" 218 pounds), and he appears to have recovered well from the throwing shoulder surgery as a sophomore. His clunker of a performance against Arizona stands out as a negative.

Mayfield's elevation to No. 1 is more with how incredibly impressive he's been this season more than Rosen really sliding.

Looking ahead to the 2018 Draft, I see Cleveland at #1 and New York (Giants) at #2 - and going Mayfield, Rosen back-to-back.

I think there's definitely something afoot with the organization structure at least and I would expect someone to enter the picture by year-end as a team president.

Everyone sticks around until the end of the season but I'm sure the Haslams are sending out feelers now to see who's available. The trouble is - who's coming to save the day?

Reminder: the reason we're doing the "analytics+" approach is that all established or reputable traditional football GMs turned down the job. No one wanted to take over the dysfunction, so they promoted the head of legal and hired DePodesta.

Ultimately, they may be forced to bring everyone back for the Year 3 make-or-break season. If they do decide to make changes, you would think it would have to be whole house - no head coach wants to be saddled with what appears to be a struggling F/O and knowing the Haslams kept the F/O means they probably have more sway and likewise, a new F/O isn't going to want to be handcuffed to a 1-31 head coach who's already taken shots at the previous group.

Which ever way they go, Mayfield will handle it better because he's a better football player. That's not a knock on Kizer either. I think Mayfield might be really special. I mean, sometimes it's just SO obvious it slaps you in the face. Like Deshon Watson! I mean, what did the guy have to do at the college level to get our scouts/FO to like him? His coach called the Browns out, and we still passed. Twice...We were all about Trubisky, so the jury is still out on that...

All I can hope is they see the obvious with Mayfield...He's a winner. Guys will lay it on the line for Mayfield, as opposed to throwing helmets in disgust at the colossal stupidity...

    Re: GM Candidates

A popular name floated out there is Eliot Wolf - Direct of Football Operations for the Packers. Problem is, have you seen the Packer's roster without Aaron Rodgers? The Browns have a more talented roster than Green Bay top-to-bottom with QB excluded.

The Jon Gruden rumors are a pipe dream at best... no chance he's taking over this mess.

Maybe with (today) having #1, #8, #33, #39, #64, and #65 to start off with could lure someone in but probably not one of the Top 5 guys.

Guilty... I knocked him to No. 2 QB last season due to the velocity numbers. We can either learn from our mistakes or be doomed to replace them.

I had DeShone Kizer as undraftable. #NailedIt

Who was Sean McVay before LA? We don't have to get a big name. Just get it right.

  10. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

That's an interesting situation because there they did keep the GM and front office in place (Les Snead) and replaced just the coaching staff.

McVay was a Gruden/Shannahan understudy with Washington.

And an Ohio boy - born in Dayton, school in Miami (Oxford).

Where was Josh McDaniels born and where did he go to college?

    Oh yeah.

    Throwin darts TD, throwin darts...

There are SO MANY more fails in the unemployment line, than "Sean McVay" success stories...

We could EASILY end up in a worse situation changing out from Hue and going with an unknown commodity. Be careful what you wish for.

Personally, we have suffered (suffering) through the roster rebuild, I am still more in favor of a forced OC and keeping tabs on Hue to hone his HC craft than starting over. Starting over means 1 of 2 things:

    1) you are taking a huge leap of faith in an unknown, which can go 1 of three ways. Huge improvement, equal to what we have, huge disappointment. Two of the three are negative.
    2) Taking a guy with experience, which means he already failed somewhere else. Unless, Bill Cowher is coming out of retirement to coach the Browns, every other candidate has already failed. I would love to see Jon Gruden (I just like his energy) come in, but he failed in Tampa. So, the reality is, there isn't a clear path to go down in order to right this ship.

He's obviously a great communicator with his young QB. That guy only focuses on offense, and it's working on gameday. People were ready to write off Jared Goff after his terrible rookie season with questionable coaching.

There will probably be some make the argument that Hue is what is holding Kizer back, but I think that's a reach...He's just not very good I'm afraid.

I agree if ya don't know what your doin. Some teams don't miss though...I was just sayin that I don't think Hue will survive, and I don't necessarily care if they hire a "Big" name to replace him...We've had ton's of big name hotshots come in here and flop.

But Goff was struggling as a rookie also..I am just not ready to concede Kizer won't make the transition from typical rookie to better pro in year two. Hue, or another coach, it doesn't matter, could be the beneficiary of an improved roster in 2018. I think Haslem has thrown down the gauntlet and demanded improvement in 2018. I think Sashi has used up his leeway and we will see improvement in what is currently on the roster, improvement by way of 2-3 relevant free agents and improvement with yet another nice cache of high draft picks in the top 65. Not all of those will contribute right away, but if only one of the 6 picks in the top 65 contribute as a rookie, it will be on par with every other team...added to the current roster getting better and getting better play through added veteran leadership in free agency. If we can get HALF of the 6 to compete with the "veterans" on the team, then the chemistry can start to come around quickly, much like the Rams are now.

Very few teams don't miss...the Steelers are the closest to can't miss as you can find and that's because they hire from within, so the consistency in the system is intact. What other franchise hasn't gone through growing pains of finding a good coaching staff?

  17. TopDawg Legend

What team has had a run like us over nearly two decades? I'm not asking for 40 years of dominating the division. Let's just not suck, and then see what happens....Surely with all those Harvard degrees in our front office now, they can find us a guy that can coach this team to respectability...If not, what the hell good are they?

  18. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Yes, we have started over every two years, no chance at getting to the next level because every new regime has come in and set their own tone by changing roster personnel and coaching philosophy.

This team is on the brink, just as many other shitty teams in the NFL are...they need to be consistent and moving in the right direction.

I don't know that Hue and Co. are the answer, but judging without allowing for mistakes in his first couple of seasons, to me is pointless. Most others that take on too much (and to me that is management's fault for allowing him to be HC and OC) fail also...Changing every two years, without allowing for growth will keep us in this eternal damned mess we are in now. That's just my opinion.

BTW, "ignoring" a fellow member of these boards really sucks..I had to hit the show ignore content just to see what in the hell you were talking about TD...It looked like you were talking to yourself for quite awhile there. It doesn't even show his quoted message in your post.

  20. TopDawg Legend

I've never used the ignore button, though I've been tempted....There's only one that can push me to that level of aggravation. And ya only need one guess.... lol!

You guys need to settle the score or whatever.... Whether ya like it or not, you and SAS are two of the best Browns posters on these boards.
