^^ can't imagine that halo. wow. i watch hawaii five-o and wonder how do all those people afford houses there? not everyone is retired. i know the cost of living is insane as everything is shipped in. going out to eat is a fortune.
There are some spectacular homes there, for sure. There are some not-so-nice areas too. The wages are so-so. Overall, rent is kind of expensive. I live in NYC, so my view of the disparity is hard to put in context. Seattle is by far the cheapest city I've lived in, as an adult. The costs of fuel and milk are the 2 biggest things that stand out to me, regarding Hawaii. Today, the lowest (cash) gas price in Honolulu is over $3/gallon, milk is over $4/gal.
so how do people live there on so-so wages? to me you gotta making a lot to afford $4 milk and $3 gas...
This is one of the biggest factors that people overlook when making a move from one area to the next. My current spot has a bit higher real estate, utility and gas prices but the lower school tax and price of basic goods more than offsets it. I lived in the South for about 8 months and the cost of housing and utilities was near astronomical but the basic goods were unbelievably cheap. This was back in the late 90s but a gallon of milk was just over a dollar, eggs were around 60 cents a dozen, bacon was under $2 and most importantly, I could get liquor, beer and smokes for almost half of what I was paying for it at home.
Hawaii's lack of a train service (eternal debate on Oahu) makes fuel the second most important necessity (behind oxygen). Almost every one drives. The bus service is like any other bus services, but with so many locals driving their POVs, the roads are jammed. H-1 expressway... not very express through the heart of Honolulu, especially at rush hour. Its funny how the little things or the stuff we use without giving it too much thought, like gasoline (etc), can be as much of a difference maker as rent or neighborhood. If you decide to live in Hawaii, you should really try to own a property. And good luck on your commute.
^ i can't imagine living or working in hawaii or owning property. i need to hit the lottery! A BIG ONE. the TV show Hawaii Five - O does a lot of fly overs on the show that shows a lot of modest smaller homes. to me that's all i would need to live a place like Hawaii. Probably cost a small fortune though. That's what i was saying on the Ditch thread about Florida-housing cost out the ass and not a lot of jobs - so how do people afford it? i live in a super high priced area and make solid money. if i could move to a cheaper area i would but a tiny starter home starts at $255,000 here, which is insanity compared to other parts of the state.
You could probably find a nice (not opulent and sans helipad) 2BR house with a decent plot around Aiea ($200K lower end of the spectrum) or even further west towards Nanakuli ($100K lower end again). Homes closer to Honolulu could range anywhere from $300K-$??? depending on the neighborhood and property specifics. Condos are popular in Hawaii and they are generally cheaper. I always liked Waimanalo (east of Diamond Head) and the Sunset Beach (north shore) area, but again, its a (beautiful) drive to the city or airport, etc. The median prices across the island are probably around $400K-$700K.
^that's not so bad. gotta find the work. oh and there's no real task force called "Five-O!" Both shows are fake. The only Police there is the Police Force! haha.
i loved the old show as a kid and have watched the new one since it debut. Scott Caan is awful as Danno Williams. He's short, annoying and I wish they would kill him off because he's that bad of an actor. Sadly the two other stars of the show left after last season over pay equality and not making as much as Caan and the lead - Alex McLoughlin. Sadly they replaced them with 2 unknown actors who are awful. I think the show ends after this season. a great villain came from the original - Wo Fat. In the original's finale, he is finally caught. he was only on tv like 7 times in the 11-12 yrs of the show. As he's being led to jail he smiles and has a handcuff key in the palm of his hand. the new one ruin Wo Fat by killing him off early and somehow being McGarrett's step-brother through his Mom or some horseshit like that.
