Browns could help themselves in two ways by adding Kaepernick

It’s now clear that the Browns would like to upgrade their quarterback position, given the failed trade for A.J. McCarron. And it’s been clear that coach Hue Jackson has an affinity for Kaepernick, dating back to the 2011 draft. It’s also abundantly clear that someone above Jackson currently doesn’t want Kaepernick in Cleveland.

But maybe the Browns should reconsider its reluctance to add Kaepernick, for reasons indepedent of the fact that he could help improve on the team’s 1-23 skid mark over the past two seasons.

The Texans, based on Monday’s comments from coach Bill O’Brien, seem to at least be considering the possibility of adding Kaepernick. And to the extent that O’Brien’s remarks may have been a trial balloon aimed at determining whether Houstonians would react in a strongly negative fashion to the possibility of signing the man who sparked the anthem controversy (and to the extent that a strong negative reaction hasn’t emerged), the Texans could be planning to make a move.

Without Kaepernick, the 3-5 Texans could plunge in the standings. Which will cause them to skyrocket in the draft order. And with the Browns holding Houston’s first- and second- round picks in 2018, that would be very good news for Cleveland.

To summarize, Kaepernick would help Cleveland. Not getting Kaepernick would hurt Houston. Which would help Cleveland.

And getting Kaepernick a real opportunity would help the NFL navigate around a collusion case that, despite the board room huffing and puffing from Covington & Burling lawyers who have a $trong incentive to see the league fight tooth and nail, could go very poorly for the league and its teams.

So it would make plenty of sense for the Browns to do it. Which obviously means they won’t.

It does just go to show how black-balled he has become. Hue Jackson reportedly "loved" him more than any QB coming out in that class and was lobbying hard for the Raiders to take him.

He's got a chance to pick him up and a sympathetic owner that already okay'd a disastrous trade proposition for a bum like McCarron.

I have to agree with this...As much as I personally disagreed with the kneeling based on my own beliefs, IF we are so desperate as to give up a 2nd and 3rd round draft pick for a guy like McCarron, I would think they would jump at the opportunity to sign a Kaepernick without having to give up anything...especially knowing you have 3 weeks to get him ready for the return of Coleman and Gordon...The additions of those 3 might be enough to win 2-3 of those last 4 games.

I would like to know what magic bean Kap has inserted into his diet since he was benched and then opted out of his contract that would improve his game.

  7. TopDawg Legend

I feel certain Kap wouldn't need magic beans to be better than a Browns quarterback...

Wow! I've missed a lot of posts, since my last visit. TD, to answer your question, I would like to reconsider my opinion on the HC / FO guys if we don't win at all this season.

I would still be very resistant to sweeping changes, which I tend to believe is exactly what would happen, and I know that is another two years of my life lost.

I'm with Lym on this. 'Force Hue to get an O coord, and let's put our now veteran team out there.

I know someone posted about Hue choosing a Hue clone/yes man, but even then, I'd expect the game strategy to improve, with hue not play calling, and seeing the game from a more detached level. It has to be very hard for him to take on everything, like he is now, and if he can get an OC to take away 50% of what he now does there, it has to make him better able to communicate with the other coaches, and handle the pressers, and the FO duties. Something is not getting the attention it should be, due to his immersion in the O.

I guess I feel like each guy in the organization is "on the job training", and while I may wish it weren't so, it remains a fact. If we can understand the need to give rookies a year or two to find their way, then how can we not do the same with the staff?

Dead horse beaten yet again. Just stay down you nag.

Improve his game? Or make some Browns game competitive?

I don't think Colin Kaepernick is a Top 25 guy, but right now we're starting #32. And if the other guys who've taken snaps this season and could qualify, he'd be the #41st. That's the sad state of QB play.

Now, I do believe Kessler gives us a better chance than anyone on the team as well as Kaepernick, but Hue has shown that there is nothing in this world that will get him to start Cody.

Kesser > Kaepernick > Hogan > Jabrill Peppers as Wildcat QB > Starting an extra lineman and direct-snapping to the running back every play > DeShone Kizer

One of the fun buzz-terms we're hearing a lot this season is "divide the season into quarters". I'm not saying no one's ever said this before, but it's something that's been repeated ad nauseam this year it seems.

    So...

    DeShone Kizer (Q2):

    38 of 71 (53.5%) for 380 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT, 51.4 rating

Believe it or not, this is actually an improvement over the first quarter.

For a 16 game season, it looks like...

    1,992 yards, 0 TD, 16 INT, 4.7 yards-per-attempt

DeShone Kizer hasn't thrown a touchdown pass since Week 3 against the 3-6 Indianapolis Colts, his two touchdowns in that game coming in garbage time when the Colts had already won - scoring 28 points. He scored zero points the week before that in a losing effort against Baltimore. Which means the last meaningful touchdown pass DeShone Kizer has thrown was Week 1 - a game that they had months to gameplan for. It was his first NFL TD pass - coming with 3:36 to go in the game.

DeShone Kizer needs to be cut. That is not hyperbole - there is no redeeming quality to his game. Not only will be lose every game he is a part of, we will not even be competitive. Any other option - Kessler, Hogan, signing Kaepernick, even bringing back trick-shot QB Alex Tanney... all would lead to at least competitive football down the stretch.

Not even factoring into how Kizer is the worst Browns QB of all time - they just failed to trade for his replacement, A.J. McCarron... what must his state of mind be like now?

Look, I know you only look at the surface (stats, etc.), but we are also looking at historically, the worst receiving group the Browns have ever had. I don't know which side is worse, but I do know these receivers are REALLY bad. There is no way on God's green earth I would cut Kizer after 7 games, especially before I made upgrades to the receiving corps.

You keep saying ANY OTHER OPTION would lead to competitive football, but the other two options have been in games and neither one made them competitive...I know you are frustrated, but placing all of the blame on this one player is not constructive, and I might add it seems a little obsessive. I don't understand why you don't spend any of your quality bashing on the receivers. At least give equal bash time to everyone.

Not sure if this is ironically posted or not...

    Worst ever?

Last season, the drop-rate among the receivers was 4.2%. Thus far this season, it's 3.3%. Last season, the starters were rookies and now they have one more year in the system.

Hogan fell flat on his face in his first start, true. In relief of Kizer, he scored the only points and made the game against Baltimore competitive. In relief of Kizer, Kessler brought the team back twice and forced overtime.

Because as bad as our receiver corps is, it's not the worst in the NFL. Our QB is.

For as bad as they are, they're not historically the worst group in Browns history. Our QB is.

And with the exception a few players, most wide receivers (and wide receiver groups) are a product of the quarterback. Take a look at the Packers. Their stable of receivers are generally well-thought of. They averaged 156 yards-per-game when Hundley took over. They averaged 230 per game with Rodgers.

Most.......but not all. You have to give both the Browns' QB and WR's pretty strong credit in the Suck-itude department. They are both detracting here and supporting whatever stats you want to throw into the discussion. But I have to agree with Irish that this is one of the worst WR groups the Browns have ever fielded (at least in my memory of rooting....that goes back to the 70's). But that's coupled with the QB's epic ineptitude to give us the product they continue to march out every week. And that's all the QB's. Can't really single any of them out for not stinking the joint up. Oh......and don't forget to throw in Hue and his atrocious play calling. There.......now you have the Browns Trifecta of Suck-itude.

I get that I'm a pretty heavy stats guy, but I watch more film than most arm chair coaches/GMs... I mean, you guys have seen my sweet setup?!

You don't need stats to see that Kizer routinely:
    • Throws off the mark - too high, too low, too outside, etc.
    • Does his receivers no favors on the boundary
    • Does not see 90% of the field
    • Misses reads constantly
    • Throws into congestion
    • Throws short of the sticks on third down
    • Fails to lead receivers on passes, leading to zero yards-after-catch
More times than not, Kizer is a determent to his receivers.

I am perfectly comfortable calling out the receivers when they screw up. On the off-chance they're thrown a catchable ball by Kizer, there's a 3.3% chance they drop it. That has actually improved since last season. Yes, Kenny Britt doesn't care... so why does the head coach continue to start him and give him a majority of the offensive snaps?

No one's going to confuse this receiver group for one of the League's best. However, with fewer parts last season (no Njoku, for example), Kessler had a 65.6% completion percentage and 92.3 QB rating. A 3.1% TD ratio and 1.0% INT ratio.

Kizer has taken the same receivers who've had an extra year of seasoning, added a few new pieces (one good, one bad at least) and is clipping along at 52.1% completion percentage and a 50.1 QB rating. A 1.4% TD ratio and a 5.2% INT ratio.

Kessler had eight games until they decided they'd seen enough. Kizer will play his eighth game this weekend. He'd need to complete 49 of 30 attempts (no, that's not a typo), throw 3 TDs and somehow un-throw 10 INTs to match Kessler's numbers.

Just saying SAS, you can only beat a dead horse so many times..........

We all agree on the QB situation. That convo has been pretty well played out. I refer to Irish and his "spread the bashing around" comment. Can we talk about the rest of the team for a bit?
