    BREAKING...

    Packers cut Martellus Bennett

Martellus Bennett‘s time in Green Bay is over.

The Packers cut Bennett today, Field Yates of ESPN reports. The Packers used the failed to disclose a medical condition designation on Bennett, who didn’t play last week and wasn’t expected to play this week because of a shoulder injury.

Bennett hasn’t been much of a factor this season, with 24 catches for 233 yards. The $6.3 million signing bonus the Packers paid Bennett now looks like a major mistake for a team that doesn’t usually make free agency mistakes. It’s possible that the Packers will try to recoup some of that signing bonus, depending on the nature of the alleged undisclosed medical condition.

Bennett has said he plans to retire after this season, so it’s possible he has played his last game. He will now be subject to waivers, so if some team wants him and he wants to keep playing, he could be claimed tomorrow and play for another team as soon as his shoulder is healthy.

Looks like Jerry is drafting up a lawsuit and has informed an owners' committee that he's not on board with extending Roger Goodell beyond 2018. This seems like big news.

    Indianapolis Colts...

Wednesday can’t end soon enough for the Colts. First came news that defensive lineman Henry Anderson needs season-ending surgery to repair a laryngeal fracture. Now Stephen Holder of the IndyStar reports doctors have recommended season-ending surgery for cornerback Vontae Davis.

Davis sought independent opinions from other doctors on his lingering groin injury with he and the organization publicly feuding over the extent of Davis’ injury.

Coach Chuck Pagano and the organization have stood behind Davis’ benching last Sunday as a coach’s decision and not injury related. Davis has insisted he was injured, saying Wednesday he felt “disrespected” with the team’s handling of his injury.

He was back on injury report Wednesday as a limited participant in practice.

Holder reports doctors have told Davis he has muscle separating from the bone and “continuing to play with the injury could ultimately make it worse.”

The Pro Bowler becomes a free agent at the end of the year, making it unlikely he ever plays a down for the Colts again.

AAV of the contract is the bigger determining factor in comp pick calculations. It's an obscure rule I'd never heard of before this deal, but Hoyer's status as a qualifying FA would've conferred with him in a trade, meaning taking him in trade would've most likely cancelled out the pick the Pats will get for Martellus Bennett. And his 49ers contract was front-loaded to the first year, which likely would've chewed up most if not all of their remaining cap space, and I'm pretty sure there's a rule in the CBA about not renegotiating a contract within a year of it's being signed (not sure if that confers in a trade, also, though), so they'd've likely been stuck without any cap flexibility to sign injury replacements for the rest of the season.

NFL: Owners voted unanimously to extend Goodell’s contract in May

Perhaps the most important point regarding the ongoing effort by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to block the extension of Commissioner Roger Goodell relates to a decision that all 32 owners made in May, including Jones.

“I’d say that, on the issue of extending the Commissioner’s contract that in the spring meeting in Chicago, the owners voted unanimously to authorize the Compensation Committee to enter in to negotiations and offer the Commissioner an extension of his contract through 2024,” NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said during a Thursday afternoon media briefing.

“The 32-0 vote gives them the authority to enter into a contract extension,” Lockhart added, saying that no further vote of the owners is necessary to conclude the extension.

That’s consistent with something PFT reported on October 29.

Lockhart also said that he expects the matter to be resolved soon, and that the negotiations have been “productive” and “amicable.”

As to the possibility of Jones filing a lawsuit against the NFL, Lockhart said he’s not aware of it happening yet, and that whether a lawsuit will be filed is a question to be put to Mr. Jones.

    Cincinnati Bengals...

Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green was not suspended by the league as a result of his actions in last Sunday’s game against the Jaguars, but he has been fined.

Green told reporters on Thursday that he was fined $42,000 by the league. The NFL’s fine schedule calls for a $30,387 minimum fine for a first fighting offense.

The wideout was ejected from the game after grabbing Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey around the neck from behind, taking him to the ground and throwing punches at him. Ramsey was also ejected.

Green said after the game that he was touched off by cheap shots from Ramsey, but that he “should have walked off in that whole situation.” He also said he’d accept any punishment that came his way and told reporters that he will not be appealing the fine.

    Tampa Bay Buccaneers...

Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans will not be in the lineup against the Jets this weekend because he’s serving a one-game suspension for blindsiding Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore in last Sunday’s game.

Evans went after Lattimore because Lattimore pushed Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston in the chest after Winston, who was not in the game at the time, poked him in the back of the head. That got Lattimore’s attention, obviously, and it also caught the attention of the league.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Winston has been fined $12,154 for the poke. Winston apologized for doing it this week and there’s no word if he plans to appeal the fine.

    Dallas Cowboys...

At 2:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit will consider whether to stay the suspension of Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott while the appeal of the decision of Judge Katherine Polk Failla to deny the injunction proceeds. So when will the ruling come?

The easy answer is, “Quickly.” Ideally by Friday afternoon. Possibly on Thursday evening. Maybe even from the bench at Thursday’s hearing.

Yes, it’s always possible that the three judges assigned to the case will decide to issue a ruling without actually writing up a ruling. The decision would have to be unanimous for that to occur.

The ultimate question is whether Elliott will suffer “irreparable harm” if he’s forced to miss games and later prevails in the case. Obviously, he will. The secondary question is whether he can show that the case presents a serious question as to whether the suspension will be overturned in court.

However it plays out, the Cowboys still don’t know for sure whether they will have Elliott, as preparations for Sunday’s game at Atlanta continue. There’s still a chance the Cowboys will learn on Friday that they’ll have to face the Falcons without him.

Ezekiel Elliott’s emergency motion denied, suspension back on

Well, that didn’t take long. A three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit quickly denied Ezekiel Elliott‘s motion for an injunction blocking his suspension, Daniel Wallach first reported.

Elliott’s on-again, off-again suspension is on again. He will not play Sunday against the Falcons.

An appellate court will hear his case on an expedited basis, and Elliott will remain suspended until then.

The Cowboys star running back attended the Thursday hearing in New York, which began at 2 p.m. ET, with hopes of a favorable ruling that would have him back at practice Friday and in the starting lineup again this week.

The NFL suspended him for six games Aug. 11, but court rulings kept Elliott on the field for the first half of the season. He received an administrative stay Friday that allowed him to play against the Chiefs on Sunday. But Elliott appears out of time to play this week.

Elliott has 783 rushing yards and seven touchdowns this season. Without him, the Cowboys will resort to a running back by committee with Alfred Morris, Rod Smith and Darren McFadden. (PFT)

    Martellus Bennett back with Patriots

The Patriots and tight end Martellus Bennett parted ways this offseason when Bennett signed with the Packers as a free agent.

Bennett’s time in Green Bay came to an end on Wednesday when the Packers waived him with a failure to disclose injury designation. That left him available for any team willing to take on his contract, which runs two more years and is worth a little more than $14 million, via a waiver claim.

According to multiple reports and as many suspected would be the case, that team is the Patriots.

The injury that Bennett was charged with failing to disclose is to his shoulder and cropped up when the Packers returned from their bye last week. He had been ruled out for this weekend’s game by Packers coach Mike McCarthy, but we’ll see how New England’s doctors feel about Bennett’s condition.

Bennett’s return to New England after a brief departure calls to mind LeGarrette Blount‘s short stay with the Steelers in between stints with the Patriots. Blount also left as a free agent this offseason and things appear to be going more smoothly with the Eagles than they did with Pennsylvania’s other NFL entry. (PFT)

Timmy Jernigan signs four-year extension with Eagles

The Eagles traded for defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan in April and they want him to stick around for a while.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Jernigan signed a four-year extension with the team on Thursday. PFT has learned, via a league source, that the deal is worth $48 million with $26 million fully guaranteed and a $10 million signing bonus.

Jernigan has started all nine games for the Eagles this year as Fletcher Cox‘s partner on the interior. He’s recorded 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks in those appearances and had 91 tackles and 13 sacks in three years with the Ravens, who also sent the 99th pick of this year’s draft to the Eagles in exchange for the 74th overall selection.

Cox is signed through 2022 and the team’s top four defensive ends are all signed through at least next season, so the Eagles should be in good shape on the defensive line for a while.

Next Ezekiel Elliott hearing set for December 1

The next question when it comes to the Ezekiel Elliott suspension relates to the timing of the hearing on the actual appeal of the denial of Elliott’s motion for preliminary injunction. With Thursday’s ruling simply denying injunctive relief while the appeal goes forward, the appeal will come to a head three weeks from Friday.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Elliott’s appeal regarding the denial of a preliminary injunction has been set for December 1.

It means that, barring some sort of legal miracle between now and then, he’ll miss at least four games: Sunday at Atlanta, the following Sunday against the Eagles, Thanksgiving vs. the Chargers, and the ensuing Thursday, November 30, against Washington.

The next question becomes whether a ruling in Elliott’s favor would come before Sunday, December 10, when the Cowboys face the Giants. On December 17, the play the Raiders in Oakland.

If he misses six games, Elliott will return for Week 16 against the Seahawks. The Cowboys finish the regular season against the Eagles, in Philadelphia. (PFT)

Nope, I honestly don't understand the formula...But the Patriots are a team that know it very well, they usually are among the teams with the most comp picks. I just read an article from NFL.com I believe. I think Catfish posted it on here earlier...

I am pretty sure it doesn't affect anything. If anything the Pats would lose something for signing Hoyer but I think it's outside the window.
