Aaron Rodgers: If I’m healthy and it makes sense, I’ll come back

The Packers placed Aaron Rodgers on injured reserve Oct. 20, which makes him eligible to return to game action in Week 15 against Carolina. His return depends on whether the Packers remain in the playoff hunt. It also depends on how quickly the star quarterback’s surgically repaired collarbone heals.

“I want to be healthy; that’s the most important thing,” Rodgers said Friday, via Mike Spofford of the team website. “But if we’re healthy in eight weeks and it would make sense to come back, then I’m going to come back.”

    If not, he won’t.

Rodgers cautioned everyone to “temper expectations” about his return, with scans of his collarbone determining when he can start throwing again. Until then, Rodgers sees no reason to discuss his return.

“There won’t be a decision made until that bone is healed, so it’s not even a conversation if it’s not where it needs to be,” he said.

Rodgers didn’t offer much new regarding the hit from Anthony Barr. Rodgers has accused Barr of giving him the finger, and Barr has accused Rodgers of spewing profanity at him.

The league did not fine Barr for the hit.

“It was deemed a legal hit,” Rodgers said. “You know that you don’t have the same protection outside the pocket. A simple shove-down probably would have sufficed in that situation, but it is what it is.” (PFT)

Bucs shutting Jameis Winston down for a couple weeks

The Buccaneers are doing more than just considering a move to Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback in order to allow Jameis Winston‘s right shoulder to heal for a little bit.

Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter said on Monday that the team is going to do exactly that. Koetter said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, that Winston will be “off for a couple weeks” after doctors looked at the results of the MRI on his shoulder. Winston, who has never missed a game in the NFL, originally injured it against the Cardinals three weeks ago and left Sunday’s loss to the Saints after taking another hit to the affected area.

Koetter’s decision means that Fitzpatrick will get the start against the Jets in Week 10. Fitzpatrick used to play for the Jets while Jets starter Josh McCown used to play for the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers will activate Ryan Griffin from injured reserve to serve as Fitzpatrick’s backup until Winston is ready to resume football activities. While the Bucs say that will be a couple of weeks, one wonders if that might be revisited if Winston isn’t all the way back and the team is 2-8 with little chance of accomplishing their team goals for 2017. Mike McCarthy: I believe in Brett Hundley

The Packers lost their third straight game since Brett Hundley took over for an injured Aaron Rodgers on Monday night, but coach Mike McCarthy says he still thinks he has the right guy under center.

I believe in Brett, and that’s not just a press conference statement,” McCarthy said. “He’s got what it takes. He has it in his body, he has it in his mind, and he definitely has the heart.”

Hundley’s final numbers don’t look too bad: He completed 26 of 38 passes for 245 yards, ran for a touchdown and didn’t have any turnovers. But the Lions led throughout the game, and the Packers’ offense went through long stretches when it couldn’t move the ball.

Despite those long stretches, McCarthy doesn’t seem to think he needs to make any changes. The Packers, who were 4-1 when Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone, are now 4-4. It’s hard to see them going anywhere with Hundley at the helm. (PFT)

Glad Mike believes, but what else would he say? Packers are toast without their Field General.

The Wide receivers didn't look to desperate last night either. Some of Hundley balls were catchable, but I think the Wide Out's were a bit less impressed.

Bottom Line - as a Vikings fan who has heard nothing over the last for ever years about how great the Pack is, I'm digging this turn of events in Green Bay. Not happy Rodgers went down, but happy to see them struggle.

Yep, that's exactly how that reads to me too Will.

The Packers season is gone. Rodgers will sit this out, especially after watching Luck struggle to return. I doubt he takes any chances at the end of the season.

If I was in McCarthy's shoes, I would develop Brett as best as possible with any eye towards moving him for the best possible return before or during the draft. I'd take a flier on another signal caller when the opportunity presents itself to add one in the draft (I'm thinking one that should already be gone falling into a spot), but if that opportunity never materializes I have an eye on signing someone that's cut preseason or looking to add a veteran free agent in 2019.

Vikings considering IR for Sam Bradford while activating Teddy Bridgewater

The Vikings had until tomorrow to activate quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the 53-man roster, and that’s going to happen.

But according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, that roster spot could come from another quarterback, as the Vikings are trying to determine if Sam Bradford is going on injured reserve.

Bradford has played just two games this year because of knee problems, but they had previously expressed optimism that his problem might not be season-ending.

Mortensen also notes that Case Keenum is expected to start again this week against Washington, though Bridgewater is close to being ready to play again.

Report: Sam Bradford had knee surgery Tuesday as team mulls IR decision

Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford has played just one half of football since injuring his left knee in Minnesota’s season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Seven weeks have elapsed since with the knee continuing to be a significant issue for Bradford, so much so that he had arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to address it. According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com, Bradford had a “clean up” procedure on his knee done by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

The surgery addressed a bone spur, loose particles and cartilage issues in the knee.

With Teddy Bridgewater set to return to the roster, the Vikings are considering putting Bradford on injured reserve. The move would clear the necessary space needed for Bridgewater’s return, but would also force Bradford to miss at least eight weeks.

Bradford was terrific in the opener against New Orleans, completing 27 of 32 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns.

Vikings announce Teddy Bridgewater active, Sam Bradford out for season

Teddy Bridgewater‘s season may soon begin, and Sam Bradford‘s season is over.

The Vikings made it official today, announcing that they have activated Bridgeawter to the 53-man roster while putting Bradford on injured reserve.

It’s the most encouraging news yet for Bridgewater, who suffered an injury so severe in training camp last year that there were concerns he might never play again. Now it appears a return to live game action is close.

But it’s another setback for Bradford, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his career and managed to play just 16 games for the Vikings after they sent a first-round pick and a fourth-round pick to Philadelphia to acquire him last year.

It’s unknown whether the Vikings will bench Case Keenum, who has played well since Bradford got hurt, for a healthy Bridgewater. But Bridgewater is now healthy enough to raise that question. That in and of itself is a great comeback story.
