He really does seem to have the moxy and the clutch gene.... "Stats are like bikini's. They show some things, but not everything." - Booger McFarland He made that remark this morning talking about how much he likes Baker Mayfield, and thinks he'll be a great pro...There's lot's of QB's that can put up good stats, but few have the "it" factor pegged like Mayfield...It doesn't show in the numbers how clutch a QB can be in certain game situations. Some have it (see Deshaun Watson) and they just instinctively know what to do, and some just never get it, regardless of the physical talent...Baker M. has it.
Sorry, I am not getting caught in the Mayfield hype train. Deja Vu on the Manziel front... "full of moxie" "clutch" "it factor" "misdemeanor public intox" That little transcription there (from ESPN) could have been written by Johnny Manziel his last year in College Station Texas... I can't bring myself to put any eggs in that basket...especially if it is the #1 overall basket
Dak Prescott had a DUI a month before the draft. What's worse, he was coming from a Children's Hospital visit....Every young man that makes a mistake isn't Johnny Manziel...
Dak Prescott doesn't have the "look at me, I'm the man" demeanor like Johnny had either...Mayfield has it in spades
lol! There's only one Johnny...I can't worry about that. This is a great example of what I'm referencing every time I mention during our pre-draft conversations that it sucks that we aren't privy to the interviews of these prospects...The smart teams learn more from the interviews than they ever could from the on field drills... Mayfield might need a little maturity, but comparing ANYBODY to Johnny Manziel is really unfair...
I'm absolutely biased, but the truth is, not many QB's roll into Columbus and do that Buckeye D the way Mayfield did. I give him a lot of credit for that one, but he is leading the nation in QBR for the second year in a row. So there is more than just the Ohio State game obviously... Is there ANY other legal issues regarding Mayfield, other than his one stupid night? If it comes out that he's regularly T-r-o-u-b-l-e, than I'll clearly have to rethink...Right now, Mayfield is high on my list.
Plus Mayfield doesn't have nearly the media attention Manziel did. Any team who would have drafted Manziel would have also flung its doors wide open to a huge series of distractions.
I really hate to keep harping, but...did Manziel? They talked of immaturity, but not so much off the field "trouble". Mayfield seems to be immature to me, I am just worried, that's all...if the Browns drafted him, I wouldn't snub him.
That sucks beyond belief for me. I picked up Watson and Fuller in my main fantasy league about 4 or 5 weeks ago, and I was steamrolling toward the championship... Wow. THat really hurts...essentially, that little non contact injury just took out my two top players and ended my hopes of winning the $$$. Unbelievable.
Not to be morbid but that should make that Texans draft pick a little higher for us. Maybe we get two picks in the top 5.
Well, we all kinda knew what type of guy Johnny was by his on field antics. I don't see that so much with Mayfield. I don't think he grandstands at all really. He is a super intense football player, and he is emotional. He seems like more of a leader that is concerned about winning. In retrospect, Johnny was more concerned with putting on a spectacular show, and always trying to antagonize everyone he ever went against.... I remember a few pre-draft stories about Johnny showing up at opposing frat parties and getting into fights, and just basically being a little dick...But I don't think any of us realized how volatile Johnny was. He was out of control. I can sum up his tenure in Cleveland in 6 words; raging, woman beating, alcoholic, coke head.
Yeah, I thought about that too...silver lining I guess. It still sucks for the NFL to lose a player like that. Wholly smokes was that kid on fire! My fantasy league scores 6 points for TD passes. Watson scored over 50 points in 3 of his last 4 games, with the lone exception being when he shredded the Browns...In 29 years of fantasy football I can't ever remember a more torrid pace by any player, than the one Watson was on...what a shame. Hope he recovers for next year. That dude is a baller... edit: and he wasn't destroying the bottom feeders either. Patriots and Seahawks were among the victims...
It's easier to get on board when you drop that Kizer ticket. Dude's a straight bum. He'll be out of the NFL in another season or two. He's also got the work ethic to back it up. He's done nothing but excel since stepping onto the college scene as the first ever walk-on true freshman to start. He was the number one rated passer in 2016 and is the number one rated passer again in 2017 right now. #1 in adjusted completion percentage, #1 against the blitz, #1 in deep passing, elite accuracy and enough arm to make plays at all levels of the field. It's hardly hype. In a class that promises only three first round talents (Rosen, Jackson, and Mayfield) the only two who would play in a traditional NFL system are Rosen and Mayfield. And with an owner in Haslam who's shown the propensity to meddle in QB decisions, a guy who wears a hat attacking someone he financially backed could be a tricky proposition.
DeShone Kizer seems to know how to carry himself... that's yielded the worst rookie season in 19 seasons. I'll take some perceived "immaturity" if it's attached to a bona fide playmaker.
Will Kizer be able to match Watsons output from half a season, in a full season? I think not. Has anyone seen Brady Quinn and Baker Mayfield in the same room together? In uniform they look a lot alike. So does a lot of write ups I've seen. "Great Athleticism" "not great arm but strong enough" "leader" "pro-style offense".
