The Yotes win that trade. In fact, they have one of the top D's in hockey. They could be this year's Oil.

Did the Leafs get beneath the 50 contract org. limit? That's what caused them to lose Kerfoot, or someone anyway.

McElhinney couldn't have had a better pre-season, but pickard is 9 years younger with a .914 save % in 84 career games.

I think he'll eventually take over the back-up role, it's smart to carry 3 goalies regardless.

Leafs lost 2 and possibly soon 3 of their prospects because the College system breaks the draft. When you draft a guy that decides to go to college he is a UFA shortly after finishing school. The negotiation window is pretty much BS. The guy has no loyalty to a club he ever interacted with. The player and his agent treat it a UFA where they shop their services. Power to the players and all that but any player that goes to college should probably have to enter some type of Supplemental rookie draft if he refuses to sign with the team that initially drafted him. Also, even if he refuses, said team could always draft him and retain his rights for 2/3 years.

A prospect that goes the NCAA route is owned by his drafting team for 4 years. He also has a lot of interaction with the team; they're in camp for a few weeks each year, and the team monitors him closely.

The problem arises when a prospect is not signed to an NHL contract* after a year or two. That's what always happens to the higher picks. (* A player loses his college eligibility once he signs a pro contract.) The middle-to-late round picks need - first of all - more development time, generally speaking. They also usually have skills or physical traits that caused them to drop in the draft - often they're smaller. Therefore, teams are hesitant to sign them.

A small number of these players have a breakout season as Seniors. These are the ones that reach UFA status because at that point a player would be foolish to not use the leverage the system has granted. But the NCAA system is not broken; this is for a very small group. I also do not think the teams are aggrieved; they've had four years to sign a draftee. They usually are content to let a prospect go unsigned up until the point he has a breakout season - then it's too late. The Avs essentially told Will Butcher to scram, (Roy felt he was undersized), then he wins the Hobey Baker and it looks like Butcher jilted the Avs. That's not the way it played out.

The college system does not break the draft, and I think the fact that there's been a dramatic rise in prospects going the U.S. college route proves this. The team benefits from not having to making a financial commitment while at the same time having their draftees develop against some of the best competition on the planet. Bear in mind, that roughly half the college players are over 20 years old - very few CHL players are not teenagers.

Toronto lost an NCAA prospect because they were at the 50 contract limit. That may be a reason they traded for Pickard rather than claiming him. That said, I think he adds significant depth to their goalie corp.

"If you're wondering why they didn't just pick him up for free a couple of hours ago, now he can be sent down to the Marlies without needing to clear waivers."

If the Leafs claimed Pickard off waivers then they would have had to have him clear waiver themselves to keep him in the minors.

No, I wasn't wondering why they would trade for a player that they could have had for "free". That's common.

I know that after this trade, the Leafs are below the 50 org. limit. That had forced their hand earlier this year.

The Pens needed depth at C after losing Cullen and Bonino to FA. They got R Sheahan today from Detroit for C. Wilson. Sheahan has not been potting the puck much lately, but it undeniably makes the Pens stronger at the pivot. Literally; Sheahan is a big man.

Detroit also gets a third round pick, and they send a fifth to Pitt.

That's a good pick-up for the Penguins. I wonder who Wilson is, lol, but if the Wings had to move someone to make room on the roster for AA, Riley made sense.

Wilson was a 7th round pick that makes the league minimum. He will be a cushy seat called scratch. This trade was all about money.

He showed soe flashes two years ago and I was excited to see what he could being a regular in the lineup last year. He did put a few in the back of the net but nothing serious.

Scott Wilson is a gritty LW that can score as well. He showed a decent scoring touch and is a competent defender too. In the right spot and playing regularly, he can potentially produce around 25-30 pts a season. Its was no big secret, Pittsburgh was looking to move Wilson especially after the acquisition of Ryan Reaves in the offseason. Moving Wilson was an easier task due to his lighter salary and diminishing role in Pittsburgh. Both teams got what they needed... filling voids with necessary role players and trimming salary fat.
***Wilson, 25, has appeared in 106 NHL games with the Penguins since the 2014-15 season, totaling 32 points (13-19-32) and 44 penalty minutes. Wilson logged 78 regular-season games for Pittsburgh during the 2016-17 campaign and notched 26 points (8-18-26) and 32 penalty minutes, adding six points (3-3-6) in 20 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs to help Pittsburgh to its second-straight Stanley Cup championship.***

I have not seen how much this saves Detroit this year against the cap. I think that was DET's rationale for trading the better player. Does anyone have the $ numbers?

  19. firehalo Guest

Wilson is at $625K/yr. Sheahan is $2M and a few pesos.

this Alex Galchenyuk stuff is great. Airing dirty laundry left and right, Cload evidently hating Russians (says some Russian guy that isn't his agent, not to mention Galchenyuk is American), cant wait to see how this plays out.
I think the root of all the Habs problems stems from Carey Price's weird looking pads.
