Browns begin reaching out to football executives

It’s not known precisely when the Browns will be making changes to the football operations, but changes to the football operations seem to be coming.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the 0-6 Browns (1-21 since the start of last season) have begun reaching out to candidates to potentially join the organization’s front office. The Browns currently are targeting football executives, and for good reason.

Currently, the front office is run by executive V.P. of football operations Sashi Brown, a lawyer who has never worked as a scout. Former baseball executive Paul DePodesta serves as the team’s chiefs strategy officer. The team has no General Manager.

The Browns have two more games before a bye, with the eighth game of the season coming in London. It’s unclear whether changes would be made during the season, or whether it would be an addition or an addition and one or more subtractions.

  4. If Hue likes him they better not draft him

Just heard Bob Mcadoo gave up play calling this week so he could focus on coaching the team - and the Giants won. What a great idea. You listening Hue???

That could be the saving grace if Hue would actually do it..I don't know if there is anyone that can force the issue or not. It seemed like they gave him a lot of power when they signed him.

One difference in this example is, the Giants have an offensive coordinator..the Browns do not. So who would have that duty bestowed upon them? Al Saunders would be the most likely candidate, but he is also 70 years old, so I don't know how much more stress he wants added to his plate.

Part of the reason I'm putting more on Hue since he was the "qualified football person" given the keys to everything besides say on the final 53-man.

He's also shown himself to be very egotistical. He's 1-21 as a head coach, which is ruining his reputation overall. If the F/O had really set him up to fail, he'd have thrown them under the bus by now.

We also have Kirby Wilson, the run-game coordinator, who would be my first choice since he'd be inclined to call more run plays.

Hue won't give it up because he wants one thing - non-stop verticals and the long ball.

Well if he is going to live or die by the long ball and his job depends on it (which I am starting to believe it might), he will need to go back to the one that will remain nameless...Sorry, Hogan cannot do the same things that he who remain nameless can. If they are going to keep that game plan, they will need to go back to the original QB.

  9. Lets end all this debate....I will throw my hat in the ring to run this sinking ship...heres the plan
    1. I am signing Kirk Cousins so I wont have to hear about the QB debate for a few yrs....he will at least bring some stability to the position.
    2. I am packaging some of these draft picks and previous draft picks(Shelton, Peppers, etc) for proven players.
    3. My 1st round pick will not be Barkley, instead I will draft the best DT on my board
    4. Thats a start

    The original QB?

Technically, he is a free agent.

Although, so is the guy who's had the best winning percentage in the last seven starters.

You're not signing Kirk Cousins. He is taking the cash in San Fran or else he will cash in with a franchise that he is comfortable with. No amount of money that Cleveland throws at him will get him to sign on as a Brown.

That's not a shot at the Browns, that's my opinion based on how the quarterback market will shake out in 2018 with available teams and situations for signal callers.
I'll agree with Shelton, but there is no reason to move Peppers yet. He is being asked to do something against his skill set, which is a damning indictment on the defensive coordinator considering he should know this is a mistake based on his own most recent history.
And you will have guaranteed that a failing offense will continue to fail.
    It's unrealistic.

I'm not taking you to task on your post stopper, just pointing out that it's simply not feasible in some regards and doesn't address the root problems of the franchise in the other.

  15. Im telling Cousins to name his price....if I cant get him on to plan B....Peppers isnt a playmaker....he wasnt in college and now he cant cover a player in the NFL....Barkley isnt that good...what bout the kid from Stanford(Love)

  16. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

    No, you said:

I forgot the last time a team with the best DT prospect won a playoff game.

    And...

So let's ship out the young talent we have and package draft picks as well for vets who either (1) want a payday, (2) don't want to be here - hence a trade, or (3) are too old to be effective.

    And...

Sign a middling-QB to the largest contract ever in the sport?

    Is Jason Trusnik available?

    That's not a valid bullet/number point.

Remove the fact that I wholly disagree with you about Barkley, going after a defensive lineman at the top of the first when there will be talent that can change the dynamic of an offense that will not sign Kirk Cousins (but may be able to trade for an aging veteran quarterback) makes little sense.
He doesn't need to be an extreme play-maker to be an effective piece of the defense, and dealing talent now for what would be little return does nothing to improve this roster.
If Love is your preferred option, I have no problem with that. I obviously am not taking him at the top of the draft but unless I have a veteran, reliable arm on the roster when my pick is due I am not passing up on the best possible offensive talent on the board. If you don't want Barkley, you better be taking an arm because the most important position on the field still needs addressed.

All the gold in the San Franciscan hills?

    Soooo... Mike Glennon?

So we're going to trick some other franchise into trading a valuable piece for him? Brilliant!

    What about...

    *checks NCAA leading rusher board*

    ...Diocemy Saint Juste?

Seriously, the same school and offense that gave us Tyler Gaffney, Stepfan Taylor, and Toby Gerhart. What could go wrong?

You just picked the guy who leads the NCAA in rushing regardless of scheme/ability/player fit!

I will agree with this. As of now, prior to a lot of film study, I still be Barkley to be the most talented player in this draft. IF they decided to pass on him, it better damn well be because they have determined beyond a doubt 2 things..

    1) There isn't a QB on this current roster that has coach-able talent
    2) They have identified a QB prospect that checks every box

Both of those occur and I am 100% behind drafting a QB instead of Barkley. Until further notice those are my only choices. (subject to change with subsequent film study work later in the year).

For the record, I don't think Kirk Cousins has ruled out any teams just yet. Kirk loves money like anybody else. The problem is, he's certain to have options, and one of those options will be San Francisco. They have a desperate need. A desirable location by most accounts. And most importantly, a coach (Shanahan) that Cousins is very comfortable with...I'd like to think the Browns could lure him, but I gotta agree with Tim that, it's just not gonna happen..

If we had an average QB and two good receivers with some chemistry with the QB, we'd be right in the hunt...We've had the worst QB shitshow I've ever seen, and yet still managed to come within 3 points of victory on 3 seperate occassions...Just imagine what a GOOD QB could do for us. Talking about taking a DT at the top of the draft???That's ridiculous. One of the few things this team is okay at, is stopping the run....Good call. Let's just put QB on the back burner for another year...
