Andrew Miller set to be activated by streaking Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) — All-Star reliever Andrew Miller will likely be activated from the disabled list Thursday and re-join the red-hot Cleveland Indians.

Miller has been on the DL twice with tendinitis in his right knee. Despite not having him, the Indians tied the American League record with 20 straight wins entering their series finale with Detroit on Wednesday.

Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway said the plan is to have Miller pitch in Thursday's game in a "low leverage" situation where he gets one out in an inning. From there, the Indians will increase Miller's workload to get him ready for the postseason.

One of baseball's best late-inning pitchers, Miller is 4-3 with a 1.65 ERA in 48 games. Last October, the left-hander was nearly unhittable while helping the Indians make the World Series for the first time since 1997.

Miller struck out 30 batters in 19 ⅓ innings in the 2016 postseason

Time to break the record against the Royals, then march on and erase any doubts by chasing down the 26 game streak(that included a tie).

    Wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwindians!!!!

Hope they just win out and make it a 35 game win streak.......and of course just sweep the playoffs to make it 46.

Only ten games away from a 100 win season, what seemed like a certainty from the Dodgers..Now, the Indians seem to have a better chance than them to reach that plateau!

Something that hasn't been done by the Tribe since 1995...

Saw a poll on ESPN yesterday asking who they thought had the best shot at winning the WS at this point and The Tribe had an 86% out of 25,000+ votes and nobody else had more than 4%-5%. Kinda surprised me with all the homers in this world.

Yeah, this streak has nothing to do with the WS...I hope their mind stays right. The playoffs will be a whole new season, against teams that really matter.

So that's 21 in a row. That now stands alone as the AL record, and it also ties the mark of the 1935 Cubs. To hear most tell it, that's the all-time record, but it's not quite that simple. John McGraw's 1916 Giants won 26 in a row, but that mark is somewhat compromised by a tie that was mixed in.

After winning 12 in a row, the Pirates-Giants game at the Polo Grounds was called because of the weather after nine innings with the score 1-1. They played a doubleheader the next day to make up for it, which the Giants won. These days, the two teams would just have completed the game from the night before, but that wasn't the policy way back when. As well, ties in those days were not counted in the standings or in the official statistics. It's as though the game never happened, even though it was a regular season contest that spanned the full nine innings. Anyhow, after sweeping that twin bill the Giants would win 12 more before losing again. Via the AP, here's what Steve Hirdt of Elias says about the Giants' mark and its current relevance:

"The Giants' 26-game winning streak has existed since the beginning of time. I do not know why certain people are looking at the 21 now and holding that up as the record or alternately trying to parse language so that they can somehow exclude the 26.

"It's the longest winning streak, it's the record for most consecutive wins, etc., because a tie game breaks neither a winning streak or losing streak for a team because it always gets replayed unless the season ends first."

Hirdt's point is a sound one, but it's not as clear cut and Hirdt wants it to be. Some might interpret "win streak" as winning every game you play during the streak in question. The Giants didn't do that. Maybe call it the longest unbeaten streak. Anyhow, it wouldn't be baseball without ancient nuances complicating the present.

So here's what this scribe is saying: The 2017 Indians and 1935 Cubs share the record for the longest win streak in MLB history. The 1916 Giants have the longest unbeaten streak in MLB history at 27 games. Opinions and interpretations -- including, possibly, your own -- may vary.

What we do know is that the Indians now own the longest win streak in AL history and are on pace to win 100 games for just the third time in franchise history. On Thursday evening, they'll host the Royals and attempt to push the streak to 22 games.

    Edit:
Just found out that way back when, ties were not counted in the win loss standings but for some strange reason individual stats from ties did count. With that in mind, I call BS on the 26 game win streak by the NY Giants.

The NHL refers to the Flyers' unbeaten streak of 35 games, and there were definitely some ties in there (25/10/0). Pre-Shoot Out days, of course. Just top it and everyone will forget about 1916... right, Lyman?

My favorite fun fact from this amazing win streak: The Indians actually have more home runs (41), than total runs aloud (35).....That's mind boggling.

Second fave fun fact: We've only trailed for 4 innings in the last 21 games...The definition of dominant.

and third: That's 8 straight sweeps...(it's hard to fathom)

Oh, and I just realized today, this winning streak started on August 24th....a.k.a. my birthday.
