for how long ? hernandez was in his mid to late 20's.

Was Barry Switzer guilty bc he recruited players that did coke and steroids in the mid-1980's?

Or how about any coach who coached at the U? Are their players innocent? FSU? Baylor?

Nebraska and Lawrence Phillips? So old man Tom Osbourne is now taking the rap for crimes Phillips did?

Sorry I don't buy that. Every man is their own man, not someone else's!

 

Myers just seems to get more of those type players than other coaches.

 

Wait, aren't we having issues in this country about underprivileged black kids and their lack of opportunity being from certain neighborhoods? NOW, it is Meyer who should be fired for giving some of these kids a chance? The back and forth in here is mind numbing....

 

No, I am saying Myers doesn't check out any background on players just their game film.

 

I will say this to you, any kid that plays at a level that catches Meyer's eye, doesn't have time to "gang bang" with much authority because he is working his ass off on the football field and in the weight room. The inference that all kids from the inner city are gang bangers is insulting.

Did Zeke and or Hernandez have juvenile records? If not, and if he could even access them...how in the hell is he going to determine they will go on to be criminals once they left his program?

Zeke Elliot was a 3 sport athlete at an academic high school in Missouri, not a 45 student per teacher player that came out of Compton.

 

Myers just seems to have a much higher rate of problem players than other coaches. Why aren't other coaches having the same numbers of players that have serious off field issues. He just seems to get a lot more than his fair share of problem players.

 

It's an anomaly, he isn't recruiting from the youth correctional facilities...He is someone that people want to fail and that is one aspect that is really unrelated to football that fives him a black eye.

 

^^ bc he's a winner and in the spotlight more. if he was coaching at some tiny DIV III school and was 5-5 with a team full of goons, no one would give a shit. he being a top coach is under the tv microscope of exposure by ESPN etc, so we see everything he does and everyone he recruits. Is the former coach at Baylor so innocent? Hell no. John Calipari in hoops? No. What is Calipari's graduation rate? I'm sure Meyer's track record isn't pretty, but a lot of top coaches are probably in the same boat, but we just don't know about it.

 

I don't know how much he knows about the recruits coming into his programs, but he has to have known about some issues. Elliot wouldn't be one he would know about, as his troubles just seemed to start up recently. But Hernandez was under investigation for a couple of murders in Gainesville Florida where he played ball for Myers, And he must have had some red flags before signing with UF. But with all the cover ups done for athletes who really knows what can be found out before they are signed. Maybe he is just very unlucky with recruits in that way.

 

I'm going to be honest with you, Catfish (and others), I'm in the midst of working 18-20 hour work days while preparing for a hurricane - I don't have time to address an issue that I've tried to address before, and have utterly failed to communicate. There is a sincere misunderstanding on your part of the responsibilities teachers and mentors of all kinds inherently accept, and I don't have the time to fix that right now. I will try to, in the future, but I've got to be honest - I don't think I'm changing minds on this one. If football has proven one thing, it's that its fans will be happy to go down with the ship, regardless of whether or not that ship has proven problems. So maybe we'll get back to this one day, but I'm not in much hurry.

As a longtime teacher and coach, I'm well aware of the responsibilities we assume, and so are those who coach football at the NCAA level. The good ones embrace it. The bad ones slough it off under the excuses of, "Winning", and "Personal accountability". Meyer is the posterchild example of this.

Are any of the people here that are defending Meyer parents, by any chance? Ah, fuck - like I said, I won't get back to it until later. Hopefully that question leads you to think about the kind of things I would've brought up, anyway.

 

Browns rookie defensive end Myles Garrett still has his eyes on sacking Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in his regular season debut, but that task will be made more difficult if he has a balky ankle.

Browns coach Hue Jackson said at his Wednesday press conference that Garrett hurt his ankle during practice earlier in the day and was a limited participant in the session as a result.


Jackson said that Garrett remained on the field “as long as he could” before going to receive treatment on the injury. Jackson also said that the injury is not on the same leg as the one Garrett suffered near the end of their offseason program.

The next update about Garrett’s condition will likely wait until Thursday’s practice.

Not only am I a parent of 4 (ages 25, 23, 14 and 12)..but I have been a coach of kids between the ages of 5 and 18 since 1992. I run the softball program in my hometown and am responsible for approximately 150 young ladies each year. I've coached football, wrestling, baseball and basketball as well. I'm not a parent coach, I am certified in the state of Ohio and attend just as many conferences on social awareness as I do on how to get a catcher out of their crouch faster or cut a .25 second off an athlete's time between 1st and 2nd base.

I understand your argument, but what I am trying to communicate is that there are so many circumstances surrounding the safety of youth, their records are not accessible...even to college football coaches, believe it or not. You of all people should understand this. How on earth are you going to pick and choose who should have an opportunity to better their lives based on heresay of the people in the neighborhood? Are you saying, stay away from certain areas, because they are all thugs and nothing good can come from them? Because that is how it comes across.

 

Irish, that wasn't my argument - that was gidion's argument. I do think it has merit, but it's not the basis of what I'm saying.
Mine is that Meyer spends absolutely no time concerned with making his players better people, or enabling them to become so themselves. You say that you spend time focusing on how to be a better mentor, not just a better softball coach. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. And I think, then, you understand my argument - Meyer has disgustingly shirked that responsibility at every turn, and has no care for it. His track record is so outstanding in that regard that it can't be due to anything other than his influence - it's not a confluence of outside variables that he's a victim to.

I'm saying that Meyer is the epitome of what a coach shouldn't be, and that he's not doing these kids any favors, for the development of their life beyond football (nor, given his players' penchant for suspensions, etc., in their professional world). I would hope you could understand that, given your perspective.

Will, I appreciate the wishes. There's still some hope that this thing moves far enough off to the east to spare us, here in Palm Beach. We're prepared, of course, otherwise.

 

Report: Browns fear Myles Garrett could miss weeks

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett hurt his ankle in Wednesday’s practice, which makes the first overall pick’s presence in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Steelers something less than a sure thing.

According to a report from Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, there’s worry that Garrett’s regular season debut will be delayed well beyond that date. Cabot reports that Garrett is headed for further tests on the ankle, which will likely include an MRI, and a team source told her that the team is “worried the injury could sideline him for weeks.”


It would be more surprising if there wasn’t some concern about Garrett missing an extended period of time given where the Browns took him in the draft and how high the expectations are for the impact he’ll have right off the bat.

Garrett dealt with a foot injury during minicamp in June, but coach Hue Jackson said that the current injury is to the other foot. Garrett was also hampered by an ankle injury at Texas A&M last season.
