I am honestly pissed. PS Game 4 is where you put out 30 players and let them fight for a spot on the practice squad. And yea, maybe there's 2 or 3 roster spots open at this point. So there's always that chance one of them makes it. So... Who are these guys out there fighting on the Browns D? Well... The Browns had the #31 defense in yards last year. And #30 in points allowed. Their overall D was one of the worst in almost every category. Notably, they gave up 143 yards on the ground per game. Why? because when teams went up 3 scores on them in the first half, they went to the run game to kill the clock. This defense is putrid. I'm talking "Mel Tucker Bears" putrid. Every single guy playing tomorrow will be looking for a roster spot. And if they don't get a spot, they will be looking to make a highlight reel play that other teams might see to bring them in. What would be a cool highlight play that will make the ESPN highlight reel rotation? Knocking Trubisky out of the game. Now, I'm not saying that they will be looking to injur him. But will they be looking to put a monster hit on him? Hell yes. We have Sanchez and Shaw. Both should be out there dodging PSG4 bullets. Not our #2 overall pick. Now, the argument is that he needs snaps and reps. And why not get them against Clevelands 4th stringers? I'd argue that Glennon, who has thrown 10 passes in the last 30 months has looked far worse and needs reps even more. So, if you're willing to throw Trubisky out there with head-hunters, why not Glennon? Thoughts?
Glennon won't get any meaningful reps he can't get at practice. Trubisky needs more in-game experience. It's the right call.
This makes no sense whatsoever. The reps that Glennon would get in the game would be exactly the same reps EXACTLY that Trubisky would get. Please tell me how they would be different? Likewise, if the reps for Glennon at practice are just fine for him, why wouldn't they be for Trubisky? And you ignore the potential injury issue altogether.
Glennon has played in NFL games before this year. Trubisky hasn't. Trubisky can use all he can get. For Glennon the reps won't be much more meaningful to him than a practice.
LAOJoe, please point me to the preseason game in which an offense and defense are realistically simulated as to a real game - or, in other words, a game in which the offense and defense are realistically and competitively run. Defenses run simple schemes and plays. Offenses do the same. The QB isn't being asked to audible, change assignments/protections, read defenses changing pre-snap... This is largely a practice situation. You're wanting to see which bottom-roster guys are going to go the extra mile and show out on game day. Which guys can potentially make plays? A play that may include laying a QB out... I'm not saying I do or don't agree with Mongo - I don't really know how I feel about it. But you can't make the case that Trubisky is getting experience akin to a game, or anything similar. It's an aggressive practice.
Trubisky is getting some experience although it honestly won't be much. It will however help him once he finally goes in a real game, especially mid-game. It's less about the difficulty and more about "the" experience (not necessarily experience). Glennon won't need that. He just needs reps, which he can get in practice.
Just so, so wrong. If you take a bunch of arena league bums and put NFL uniforms on them, it doesn't suddenly make them NFL players. Having your players then play against them doesn't make it an "NFL game" either. You seem to think it does which is surprising frankly. There is virtually nothing of value in this game for Trubisky that he couldn't get from practise. In fact the case could be made that if he was working with the 1's, then practise would be more beneficial. Preseason week4 is prob the most meaningless game of the NFL year, it shouldn't even exist. Just a bunch of guys running around the field trying to stand out doing the basic of basics like dline said. In terms of Trubs development, essentially pointless. SM has already highlighted the injury risk issue in terms of the opponents, but how from Trubisky's own team mates? Did you see the hit he took against the Cardinals LAJoe? That could easily have been Trubisky's season and it happened cos our idiot HC had him playing in the 4thQ alongside 3rd stringers and future cuts. So now we're gonna do it all again? Genius!! I'd love to say i'm surprised by this move, i'd love to say that. But im not at all. Fox is a proven idiot who also has less than zero clue re QB's. And the Bears as a whole have been mismanaging the position for decades. Ship 4 draft picks to take a QB 2nd overall then do everything you can to get him zapped in preseason. Its just such a retard Bears thing to do.
I get the injury risk, but I'm not opposed to getting him more in-game reps, even if it is 1) preseason 2) against scrubs 3) against scrubs on the Browns. If he gets injured I acknowledge that I'll completely change my tune and all hellfire will be unleashed on Fox.
Fox seems to do the opposite of what's expected so this is now surprise , no upside to this decision . They were hot and bothered over Shaw last year prior to his injury so run him out there for the entire game . I don't think you should coach to prevent injuries but # 10 has shown enough that he doesn't need to risk it at this point .
Fair enough. So you're in that camp. So based on the pr-season games we've watched, who looks like he needs ore reps - the QB starting against Atlanta or the QB that's starting against the Browns?
One QB has consistently made solid reads and his receivers in stride and seems to have a grasp on the offense in terms of basic philisophy. The other has had a dumbed down playbook and had easy quick release plays called to get him in rhythm. Meanwhile he's thrown into double and triple coverage often and missed seeing wide open receivers. Neither should be playing in this game....but the argument that Trubisky needs the reps more than Glennon is silly.
Whaddya mean 'Trubisky Starting Tomorrow'? Is there a game I should be aware of? This is getting more and more challenging this being a Moderator thing.
Yes why not? I mean if Glennon is going to be the anoited starter going into week one what better game would there be for him to build his confidence than against scrubs of the Browns? It just seems like a no brainer to me he could come out looking like either Glennon a HOFer or Glennoff piece of shit he really is. If he can't put that game together WTF are you doing starting him in week #1 and putting the Bears behind the 8 ball before they even break the rack.
Glennon doesn't need reps, he won't be on the team next year. The other camp I'm in, there is no doubt in my mind, is the "Pace and possibly Fox are tanking the year" camp.
Ok, another camp I'm in is the "preseason don't mean shit" camp. Brady Quinn looked like a god his rookie year in preseason too. Fuck, I'm going to camp more than my 8 year old...
