Well, it is time to start thinking about roster cut down day..What if anything do we have to offer in trade before that day arrives? From other threads these are the hot topics: Joe Haden, it is rumored Sashi is calling other teams aggresively looking to move Joe, what could we be expected to see for such a trade? QBs: It would seem Kessler and Osweiler may be on the trade block as well. What would you expect from these two? Post trade scenarios at will and we can discuss them
Trade #1: Joe Haden to Indianpolis Colts Haden's contract ($14.4M cap hit, $10.8M dead cap) is so large that 21 teams are able to absorb without cutting some fat. Fortunately, there's a couple who ranked near the bottom in pass defense last season who can (Tennessee, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Oakland). You can throw out the Packers and Raiders, both teams rarely trade for players like Haden. Tennessee probably wouldn't either, leaving just the Colts. Browns could pick up a third rounder with a condition on playing time to elevate to a second rounder, which would seem appropriate. With McCourty, Brien Boddy-Calhoun, and Burley on the roster, Haden might be our fourth-best CB. Trade #2: Brock Osweiler to Jacksonville Jaguars Another bloated contract for a below-average player that needs to move. In this case, the Browns would literally be paying another team to take him. Signing him to a new deal this year with a $15M signing bonus and $1M contract hit could make this move palatable. Jacksonville easily has the worst QB situation in the NFL and it isn't close. Unless they want to prematurely end Fournette's career by seeing 9- and 10-men in the box all year, this move is prudent. Browns could recoup maybe a fifth rounder, again with escalators to make it worth a fourth - if they eat $15M of the $16M he's due. Trade #3: Jarvis Landry to Cleveland Browns In a move reminiscent of Jamie Collins' trade, the Browns toss a second rounder (Philly or Houston's) to the Dolphins for a talented player eyeing a contract season and looking to get paid. Landry immediately improves the receiving corp here and gives rookie DeShone Kizer a suitable outlet in the passing game. It's time to admit the Browns missed badly in 2016 taking four WRs that year. A second rounder isn't too costly given the abundance Cleveland has and the fact that the best WR prospect next season is a 5'10" punt returner from A&M (Christian Kirk). Trade #4: Cam Erving to Los Angeles Chargers Pretty evident that Erving can't play in the NFL, but there's no team with worse injury luck than the Chargers. They're already thin at the position after losing starters this preseason. Erving wouldn't net more than a 2019 seventh round pick I'm sure, but it's at least worth a shot.
They had until Saturday though, why do this today first thing? I don't like this move at all....A veteran backup, they cut to save money (approximately $11M)...yet they paid $16M for a future 2nd round draft pick?
I'm guessing there's more to come. Cam Erving and Brock Osweiler can't stay on this roster much longer.
That also isn't the approach of this F/O. They'd rather clear the cap and lose a veteran to give some of the younger players more exposure. McCourty and Taylor should be the starters with Boddy-Calhoun a starter in the slot (as well as an option outside). They've yet to make the team until final cuts, but there is a lot of potential in our undrafted free agents - Najee Murray and Channing Stribling. It's probably not a room that strikes fear into opposing quarterbacks, but they also have Marcus Burley, Trey Caldwell, Darius Hillary, and (although he's shelved for now - PUP), Howard Wilson. Lastly, this is a $14M dollar message from Gregg Williams. Desmond Bryant got the boot a week after playing well into the fourth quarter of a preseason game. Williams wants competitors and guys who are out there earning their spot. He put Haden on blast the minute he got here and obviously didn't let up. It's the cold aspect of the business because Joe was a good dude, but Williams is sending a message to all his players. Put up, or ship out.
Why keep him on until Saturday? Are we gonna give him reps in Chicago Tomorrow night, hoping some team will see him and decide to take on his contract while trading us a 3rd rounder? No. We weren't going to get a trade, so why take him to Chicago? I'm not saying I'm happy about the move, but it's not surprising. Joe hasn't been Joe for a couple years now. I mentioned yesterday that we will probably have to end up cutting him. Erving too for that matter. Who's gonna trade anything for him? Look, I always liked Haden too, but you know how this business works. It's brutal sometimes... I was at Dicks Sporting Goods just a few days ago with my son, and I mentioned how stupid they were for stocking the racks with Joe Haden jerseys. Why the hell wouldn't they go with the freakin #1 pick of the draft???!!! Whose in charge of that operation? lol! They should allow anyone that bought a Haden jersey to exchange it for something else...
Two (possible) reasons: 1) His contract made him untradable. Not only was he due 11M but 4M was guaranteed when he was on the roster on 2/8/17. 2) In the event the contract has offset language they have a better chance of recouping their 4M if he's signed before Week 1.
Dude refused to consider a pay cut, and asked for his release...So we gave him a jumpstart on finding a new team...
It will be interesting to see how the final roster shakes down. Is Peppers going to be counted as a S/CB/LB to free up another roster spot or two? I was thinking due to the lack of inspiring play at WR that we could see 4 RB and 4 TE make the final roster instead of an inflated receiver number. Possibilities like Peppers taking up multiple spots could open up the possibility for both.
I will say this....Haden is a pretty good tackler and lost his 1 on 1 coverage skills so I can see a team taking him and moving him to safety...Rod Woodson type of move
All I can say is, I can see Pro Bowl Joe Haden showing up for 2 games a year over he next two seasons, even if he disappears the other 14 regular season games...That will suck if he ends up costing us a game against the Steelers.
*Ruiter notes that it's actually $13.26 million in a later tweet. Why would Browns pay a division rival to take a player? Ahh... draft picks.
Browns receive a 2018 5th round pick from KC, in exchange for Cam Erving....Wow! I stand corrected. I guess we did get something out of him.
