I don't think it will shock anyone that I am happy to see this. I think he has done enough for me to believe he can work on the job to go through his rookie mistakes and become successful.
Absolutely no denying that he's the most talented QB on the roster. I will try to dig up the quote/tweet, but I saw where basically Hue was *shocked* that Cody and Brock didn't take the starting job. Good for DeShone on seizing the opportunity and making the most of it. Now that we have the starter settled - and ideally it's more than a 16-game try out - we need to begin building a team around him. The playbook is already suited to his skill set, so that's a plus. The newest elephant in the room has to be the absolute wretchedness of our wide receiver room. So keep in mind... Adding a player like Landy makes a ton of sense. 24-years old, very talented and entering a contract year. Trade Philly's second rounder and Joe Haden to Miami for the player straight-out (similar to the Watkins/Rams deal). You've got the cash to sign him to an Antonio Brown-sized contract if he plays well in the system and you get 16 games to make sure he does. Immediately gives Kizer a reliable target, relegating Coleman (#bust) to a deep threat which appears to be the only thing he's suited for. This would be the exact same approach they took to adding Jamie Collins last season. The price is higher obviously because the market was just reset this offseason, but I'm okay surrendering a two and expendable veteran for a guy who gives you 64 yards per game and catches 70% of his targets. The other thing to keep an eye on...
Just imagine trading for Jarvis Landry and getting Gordon back in time for the Bengals game (10/1). The offense goes from gaping liability to potentially something special.
Coleman is making plays every game...not sure what you want him to do...calling him a bust after his preseason performance is crazy
More to do with his crap 2016 one. He's an unreliable target, generates nearly zero separation, and only has success on the deep ball intermittently. He's not a #1 wide receiver. Preseason: 8 receptions, 106 yards (13.3), 0 TD (3 games) Cooper Kupp: 8 receptions, 105 yards (13.1), 1 TD (2 games) Kupp was a guy I really wanted them to draft this last season. Taywan Taylor (8 receptions, 145 yards) was my other one.
Jared Goff/Sean Mannion and Matt Cassel? Probably not. Coleman was billed as a guy who could make his QB look better. Doesn't matter if it's Kizer or Kozar throwing the ball to him... he should be making defenders miss, generating offense himself, and breaking a big play.
Point is: DeShone Kizer is the youngest starting QB in the NFL and if he hadn't declared would be a junior in college. Now, he's going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 13 days. He's got a ton of talent but is going to need help along his journey and I don't feel great about Kenny Britt or Corey Coleman. Spoiler ahead: neither do the Browns. Grossi isn't the only one reporting that the Browns are looking to add a receiver via trade. They still have waiver priority at the roster cut-off, so they get their pick of cast-offs, but a guy like Landry or Allen Robinson (Jacksonville) would be massive upgrades to the position, knocking Coleman and Britt down the depth chart.
I get that @IrishDawg42 is probably nursing a QB-related party hang over and @Lyman is still in his boycott, but where's the rest of the Browns fans at? We got a Steeler's fan posting the thread and a Seminole fan having a chat... but that's about it.
I would actually like to see the minutes played by each as well. I don't think Coleman has had more than 4 quarters worth of game time...Where as both Kupp and Taylor have had extensive playing time. I was not high on Coleman coming out of school, I think I have made that clear since before he was ever drafted. However, I don't gauge a WR until after his 3rd season. Way to early to call him a bust, despite his "lack of effort" in 2016.
Honestly, I didn't want to post anything related to Kizer, based on my appreciation of his skill set...I wanted to see what everyone else thought first before chiming in.
Well, I'll go then. I was probably one of the more (most?) vocal about Kizer sitting due to my belief he was too raw. It's undeniable the guy has talent but I thought some marinading would help him in the long run. With the latest news, we see that will not be the case. I am for the move since the coaches obviously feel strongly enough that it is the right decision. Some of us can point to his stat line (which was bad) but that's ignores the performance, as well as Hue's approach. He could have played it safer for the rookie - as Reid did with Mahomes this preseason, but he didn't. With his back against his own end zone he had him come out firing. I like the test by fire. Overall, I still saw a raw rookie. There were some spectacular throws and his line would have been helped by more reliable receivers, but the flip side is there were also at least two interceptable balls (in addition to the one that was) that he got away with. There will definitely be growing pains this season and I expect him to toss a couple of heart-breakers in games. TBH... I'd guess around 18 turnovers on the year. The flip side is that there is a tremendous amount of potential there, too. So the hope becomes that the offense DeShone's able to produce is more than the turnovers and mistakes. There's already some very subtle things he does exceptionally well - pump fakes and hitches in his throwing motion to misdirect the safeties and linebackers. He seems to be doing a better job reading coverages and knowing where to go with the ball - the next steps will be improving anticipation of throws (currently throwing once guys come open leading to limited YAC). He's obviously not afraid to thread the needle and has the arm talent to get it there, receivers just need to come through with the catch. I still think a winning season is achievable, tbh. We just need to keep the defense fresh and lean on the running game while bringing the rookie along.
It's been a decade since we had a coaching staff last even three years. Forgive me if I've got an accelerated clock.
