Sorry, the other thread was hijacked by the Coleman talk...I figured it would be better to move it here, in case some don't care about reading about this subject...

OK Stopper, I sat down yesterday and went through every catch and this is what I saw:

    Catch:
    1. Right foot looked out of bounds, great catch and he did keep that foot in, but man he needs to be more aware (not unlike Britt who did NOT get two feet in last week). This is being nitpicky though, as he did score one of his 3 TDs on this catch. TD #1
    2. DB didn't have control coming in, yet Coleman went down immediately for 0 YAC
    3. DB was 5 yards off Coleman when he caught it, and only picked up 4 YAC..down first contact
    4. Great catch falling to the ground with defender draped all over him. Very nice tough catch.
    5. Nice catch in traffic...Why does he immediately fall to the ground? IMHO on this play, he could have gotten more yards, possibly even a TD if he doesn't go to the ground off fear of being hit.
    6. PLAY ONE OF MAKING GUY MISS. Good angle after catch, but gets caught from the side by a LB of all people. No one else around, should have run away from a LB.
    7. Caught and ran straight out of bounds near sidelines. This ball should have been turned upfield. Doesn't have good enough body control horizontally.
    8. Wide Freaking Open, obvious misassignment, but I will take an easy TD every day of the week and twice on Sunday..TD #2
    9. Nice catch in traffic, ran backwards to get extra yards but failed because he never adjusted to running North to pick up positive yards.
    10. GREAT concentration over the middle of the field, took big hit and held onto the ball.
    11. 0 YAC
    12. 0 YAC
    13. 0 YAC
    14. Open field in front of him, only managed 3 YAC before running out of bounds
    15. PLAY TWO OF MAKING GUY MISS/BROKEN TACKLE. Nice catch, shifty move put on the defender to push himself into the end zone. TD #3
    16. Open Field, 0 YAC
    17. Open Field 0 YAC
    18. O YAC, ran out of bounds
    19. Open field 3 YAC
    20. Open field 1 YAC
    21. PLAY THREE OF MAKING GUY MISS. Nice move on first man, 5 YAC down on first contact
    22. Ran horizontal, 0 YAC
    23. 0 YAC
    24. -1 YAC
    25. PLAY FOUR OF MAKING A GUY MISS. Great move to make the initial guy miss and was rewarded with 9 YAC. THIS IS WHAT I HOPE HE DEVELOPS INTO CONSISTENTLY!!
    26. Hit as he catches the ball, gets knocked back 1 yard, can't avoid next level defender coming in nets 0 YAC despite having open field past initial contact.
    27. 2 YAC

Only 4 catches did he not either run our of bounds or go down on initial contact...that's out of 27 catches shown and I can only assume 33 catches on the year since the other 6 catches weren't on this reel.

I can show you 100 receivers that can get 4 catches out of 33 to elude a defender and pick up extra yards. This is what I mean by NOT elusive. making the first man miss on only 12% of your catches is being an average wide receiver in the NFL.

Now, did I see some things I like, absolutely, but elusiveness is not something that was on that highlight tape. Maybe injury related..on one side I hope it's injury related, on the other side - one of my main concerns with him coming out was minor injuries effecting him..elective surgery over playing in the bowl game as an example. This kid is in it for himself, this team isn't being built on "me" players. I don't think for a second Myles Garrett is a "me" player, Joe Thomas and Joe Haden (despite what many think of his diminishing skills) are not "me" players. Christian Kirksey is not a "me" player...And I know for a certainty DeShone Kizer is not a "me" player. That attitude will not thrive in this locker room. He needs to man up and play to the top of his ability rather than just flashing on a few plays every now and then.

Irish: *Breaks-down 27 catches, showing overwhelmingly him to be a disappointment*

Stopper: "He's going to be better, I just know it." *qualifies the immediate statement*

  4. Sorry but I didnt find those 27 catches as a disappointment....he will have 60 catches minimum this yr as long as the QB play is avg...I guess it shows how bad Kessler really is :D

  5. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

When you catch 45.2 percent of your targets, 29 of 33 catches coming on short route patterns, no less, it's tough for any QB to look good.

Kudos to McCown who posted a 110.0 rating throwing at him.

  6. SAS, its hard to catch a pass 5 yds out of bounds

  7. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

    Fun Fact!

Coleman missed 6 games with injury, the majority of those during Kessler's playing time. Kessler attempted the fewest throws to Coleman yet completed the highest number (47.4). Six attempts by Kessler (31.6%) were deep throws. He completed two - 34 yards.

McCown (8 deep attempts, 22 total) was 36.4%. He completed four - 116 yards.

Griffin (9 deep attempts, 32 total) was 28.1%. He completed one - 58 yards.

  8. I guess that goes back to your comment of short routes which Cody is decent at so far

  9. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

    Fun Fact!

Kessler completed 66.8% of his passes to his receivers, only two had less than 60% catch rate (Coleman, Ricardo Louis). Removing their totals bring his adjusted completion percentage to his targets up to 76.4%.

    Fun Fact!

Kessler was our most effective quarterback, converting 30.6% of his plays for first downs and sustaining more drives than the other QBs.

    Fun Fact!

Kessler attempted 29 deep pass attempts on 193 targets. This rate (15.0%) is higher than the NFL average. He completed 44.8% of his deep pass attempts. This rate is significantly higher than the NFL average.

Bob Griffin - who's specialty is the long-ball - attempted 23 deep passes on 146 targets. This rate is in line with Kessler's (15.8%). He completed 26.1% of these.

Josh McCown - who was brought in to "push" the ball downfield against Baltimore attempted 34 deep passes on 165 targets (20.6%). He completed 29.4% of these.

    Fun Fact!

In the second Baltimore game, Kessler was benched for McCown for not "pushing the ball" downfield. In his half of play, Kessler attempted three deep passes - one incomplete, defended by the defensive back and two complete for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Josh McCown, in his half of play, attempted two deep passes - one for 18 yards and another for an interception.

  10. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

Kessler completion on short routes - 71.0
Tom Brady completion on short routes - 72.0

  11. I think Coleman showed his separation ability 2nite....no doubt he will b solid

And I think Kizer showed his separation from the QB competition. Regardless of rookie mistakes, he is head and shoulders already above the rest. I don't think it is too early to get him started on his path learning on the job. I originally wanted him to just get the start for the 3rd preseason game to see how he does, but Hue came out and said when he names the starter for that game, it's the starter for the season opener...So regardless of what I said before, I am full force behind Kizer. I am prepared for the rookie mistakes. One that I hope Hue spends a LOT of time on this week is taking unnecessary hits. Get the first down, then go down..it's actually a pretty simple concept. He made a rookie throw to the sidelines that he was lucky to get back on a defensive penalty, but I don't mind those throws because it seems like when he makes a mistake he learns from it.

For me, I'm hoping to hear Kizer's name tomorrow as the starter moving forward..then I hope by next week we have a draft pick for Osweiler, even if it's only a 7th rounder.

I'll go back and re-watch the game because I saw no such separation. In fact, the QB play last night was so putrid that I'll stand by my earlier statement that the Browns' Franchise QB is currently not on the roster.

I don't deny that the most talented quarterback on the roster is DeShone Kizer - but that doesn't mean he's ready to start.

He took three sacks, two of which were directly related to him holding the ball too long (one called back for penalty). He threw an inexcusable interception that was, fortunately, overturned by penalty away from the play. Still a poor decision and worse throw.

Kizer struggled against New York's 1's just like Osweiler did. He moved the ball well against the 2's, as one would expect. As a friendly reminder, Week 1 is the Pittsburgh Steelers. They're pretty good.

If they name Kizer the starter, I'll obviously support it - and would support ABBO (Anyone But Brock Osweiler), but the prudent move is going to be to start Kessler through the first slate of games until Kizer has more coaching under his belt and is ready. There's no sense in wrecking his confidence or forcing him to rely on instincts that become more habit the more they're used.

I don't disagree that Kizer struggled vs their first team..but.. We are talking the #2 overall defense in all the NFL in 2016

We have grown to not only loath, but fear Pittsburgh..however, last year they were #12 overall defense in all the NFL in 2016

    Our schedule:
    Team(2016 defense ranking)
    Steelers (#12)
    Ravens (#7)
    Colts (#30)
    Bengals (#17)
    Jets (#11)
    Texans (#1)
    Titans (#20)
    Vikings (#3)
    Lions (#18)
    Jaguars (#6)
    Bengals (#17)
    Chargers (#16)
    Packers (#22)
    Ravens (#7)
    Bears (#15)
    Steelers (#12)

Honestly, having only 5 games against top 10 defenses and only 1 in the first 5 games, I think this would be a perfect year to start a rookie. The Steelers allure isn't part of the rookies psyche though, it's part of Browns FANS...

I get what you're saying. I think it goes beyond just the defense though. It's three AFC North games in the first four. Sure, their defenses may not be 1,2, and 3... but divisional games are almost always more intense.

We know QBs take more credit for success and blame for failure than other positions. Going 0-3 in the division to start does impact - not just a rookie, but - a teams' psyche.

The inverse is also true. If we go 2-1 or 3-0 with Kizer against the division, this team will be big-time believers. I would feel better about Kizer's chances with a better supporting offensive staff.

You don't face the 2nd overall defense in the NFL in the preseason.

  18. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

I agree 100% and I stand by my assessment that Kizer gives this team the best chance to NOT be 0-3 in the division after week 4. If you have already decided that 0-3 is the only outcome, then by all means, throw away another season. I want to win games dammit, that is the only thing I am looking at. If a player cannot handle the offense, then I agree with you...however, if the player is handling the offense better than any other player on the team, then I'll be damned if that player is sitting on the sidelines watching because I am worried about his delicate psyche.

Again, I think we agree. This is why it's going to be such a difficult decision for Hue to make.

Really Joe? Well, they faced players that made up the 2nd ranked defense of 2016 in that first and second quarter... What the hell do you want to base anything on when evaluating? Holy short hairs, this is getting ridiculous, the arguing over minor things.

Did a player sit out of preseason, I'm sure he did, the same as players are hurt and sit during regular season.

As far as preseason is concerned...here are the rankings:

    FUMBLES
    Team
G PTS/G PTS PLYS YDSG YP FD/G MD ATT PCT MD ATT PCT PEN PENYDS TOP TF L
    Baltimore 2 5.0 10 99 129.0 2.6 8.5 4 25 16.0 1 2 50.0 16 162 24:04 5 1
    N.Y. Giants 2 15.0 30 114 234.0 4.1 14.0 8 25 32.0 0 0 0.0 15 143 30:39 1 1
    New Orleans 2 13.5 27 137 235.0 3.4 15.5 9 31 29.0 1 5 20.0 19 139 31:50 3 1

Giants gave up 234 yards per game (2nd lowest in the NFL this preseason), the Browns had 256 and the Steelers had 248 yards (minus sack loss yards)

So, if you are arguing that the Giants are not preseason #2 defense in the NFL, well you are wrong..If you are arguing they are 2nd in the NFL BECAUSE of the Browns, well then you are saying the Steelers are worse than the Browns on offense...

How petty do you have to be to state they are not facing the #2 defense because it's preseason?
