Agreed. Mack is the lynch pin for any upcoming roster moves. Here's where you an I have a bit of a disconnect. We can't possibly stand at $134.2M for our top 51 because we currently don't have 51 players under contract for 2016. At this moment, we only have 49 players under contract and the total of their cap hits equals $129.6M. (This number includes $8M for Mack for 2016. If Mack walks, the number goes to $121.6M.) Using the $152M for the 2016 cap, current salaries of players under contract of (-) $129,6 and the (-) $8.9M reserve for 2016 rookie contracts that leaves $13.5M. We also have $3.4M in 2016 dead money so the total cap is now at $10.1M. We were also under the 2015 cap by $17.5M. Not sure how much of this carries over to 2016 but, if only $7M carries over, that puts us at $17.1M under the 2016 cap. Agreed. Especially Schwartz if Mack walks. If Mack stays, then Erving moves to right tackle if Schwartz doesn't resign. o I think Bowe and Hartline are no brainers. o Donte Whitner. How comfortable are you with I. Campbell at SS? o Paul Kruger. How comfortable are you with Mingo? o Desmond Bryant. I think Xavier Cooper can hold the fort down for a while. o Karlos Dansby. Karlos is one of only TWO inside LB's currently under contract. The other Kirksey. o Tramon Williams. I think his $3.2M could be better spent. o John Greco. With all the uncertainty surrounding Mack and Schwartz, cutting Greco would be a mistake. o Josh McCown. Only a fool would consider this one.
I thought I read recently that Joe Haden's entire 2016 salary ($10.1 million) was just made fully guaranteed. That's a steep price to pay for a guy who missed 11 games with repeat concussions and who was one of the worst cornerbacks in the NFL during the five games he actually suited up. Guess the only out of those dollars now is a trade.
Oh yeah. The Bowe situation is one of the worst free agent moves in Browns' history. Hartline is a marginal talent who just had the lowest yards-per-target (6.8) of his career. Or Barkevious Mingo. I think they keep Kruger around one more season, after reading Ray Horton's comments. He's the only consistent edge rush we have, when used effectively, and without a guarantee of 10+ sacks behind him, we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot. Statistically, Bryant has been our best defensive lineman since we picked him up, per PFF.com. Cooper had one of the worst grades against the run last year and was the worst-rated lineman against the run in his draft class. Our absymal run defense is only going to get worse with him in the lineup. Honestly, we be better served cutting Cooper as he offers almost nothing outside of a pedestrian pass rush. He was another huge fail on the Ray Farmer draft list. Grandpa Dansby is our only playmaker on defense. We desperately need to keep him and keep him drinking from the fountain of youth. Kirksey, per Horton, is going to be given the shot at starter at ILB and is entering a make-or-break season himself. Better than two offsides penalties that lead to game-winning field goal attempts? Greco's versatility is an asset. Unless they think Cam Erving can become the swing lineman. It's a moot point if Mack doesn't re-sign here and Erving is elevated to OC, of course. Enjoyed the second-best season of his career at age 36. I fully support bringing him back and letting him lead the offense as long as his body holds up.
I not sure why people want Mack back.....this OL hasnt consistently had a run game for yrs....their a finesse unit that struggles w any physical defense...I cant remember the team, but I recall Mack getting bulldozed on a 3rd n short play which caused a -5 yd run...it may have been the Seattle or KC game...thats not an anchor IMO
Mostly because he's an All Pro at a very pivotal spot on the offensive line. With how good pass rushers have gotten, the gap is closing (almost zero in some opinions) between LT and RT and a majority of the success comes from the line calls and getting alignments correct pre-snap. That's the duty of the center. I think the struggles last season had a lot to do with scheme and inexperience at the Offensive Coordinator position. Under the zone-blocking scheme that Shannahan used, the Browns were 17th in yards, 4th in TDs and that was with Mack out half the season. When Mack was in the lineup, the Browns were first in the league in rushing during the first five games.
Like Lym mentioned the salary cap isn't the issue. The new cap is supposed to be in the neighborhood of 156M thanks to a grievance the NFLPA won recently and the Browns can carry over 20+M from 2015 if they choose. That puts their adjusted cap north of 176M. Naturally they can't construct their roster with that number because if they do they will be over the following year but they can use what they need and if necessary front-load some players. Haslam has been reluctant to spend so far. Will be interesting to see if he opens up his wallet a little more with his new team in place.
Where are you guys getting your numbers? We have to wait until March 9th to cut Manziel, because we don't have enough cap space in 2015 to cut him now...We only have about $2M in space in 2015... As for 2016...Here is where I got my numbers: http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/cleveland-browns
According to OTC.com . . . We have $17,751,746 cap space left over from 2015. I suspect they are waiting to cut Manziel because on March 9th, his dead money is lower than if they whack his ass now. Go to that site using your link, then click on the "Cap Space" field in the top banner. {edit} I may very well be mistaken about the timing on releasing Manziel. That was simply a guess on my part.
Yes, that's right, I was not counting cap carryover for 2016... They can't cut Manziel before March 9th because they didn't declare carryover by the end of the regular season, so they do not have enough in 2015 to cover his accelerated money owed him. However, that's right we do have the cap carryover to use in 2016..Have to be careful though, that's a one time deal when used, so the contracts will have to be front loaded.
Not really hard 2 figure out, he was placed there cause Pouncey was hurt, Kalil was in the Super Bowl not cause he actually played well
Mack was All-Pro by default...he was voted the best at his position so they had no choice. lol All Pro designations are not affected by the Super Bowl, that is the Pro Bowl that is, there is a difference. Personally I thought he had an off year, but I would chalk it up to coaching.
I think it was a combination of coaching and having nearly an entire year off due to his broken leg. I think he will be getting back to normal this year and look as dominant as he was prior to the injury.
U are correct...SAS confused me w All Pro but ur right Pro Bowl...I dont see where Mack was All Pro??? 1st team- Ryan Kalil 2nd team- Travis Frederick
He was second team All Pro in 2013 stopper... Just because he is the THIRD best player at his position in the NFL, doesn't mean he is over rated either... 2014, he was part of the #1 line in the NFL until his injury, at which point the entire line, including ALL PRO JOE THOMAS fell apart at the seams... 2015 started out slowly as well with his return, but we also saw an offense that was 100% geared towards passing the ball despite what the coach said they wanted to do... Hue Jackson runs the ball...that is his MO...the run opens up the passing in his offense. The 2016 offense will look very different than the 2015 offense. Mack would be an integral part of that if he remains in Cleveland.
