Sorry, I haven't had much time lately to do a real analysis on the running backs, but LUCKILY, time is running out.

Does anyone on these boards disagree that this team needs to draft a running back?

I like the signing of Ben Tate, but he isn't going to do it alone.

What have some of you done as far as research on the running backs and who wants who and where?

Wow, 18 views and no one has anything to say?

So am I to expect that you all are fine with our current roster of RBs and we should simply cross that position off the list for the draft?

Personally, I want a player that had high output in college and shows a penchant for getting yards after contract.

    Enter Carlos Hyde...

Unfortunately, he is the only one I have had extensive time watching to this point. I will try to get on the other game film in the next couple of days. I was just hoping someone had done some research on these guys...

    LOL...

It's not that I don't have any thing to say regarding this topic Irish.

I really Haven't watched enough film to say who I'd want and in what order. :p

There are a number of good RB's in this draft, Irish. However, if you're looking 3rd round or later, Carlos will be long gone along with a few others (Tre Mason, Auburn and Ka'Deem Carey, Arizona to name a couple). Bishop Sankey (Washington) and/or Jeremy Hill (LSU) may make it to the top of the 3rd.

One guy I'm planning to learn more about is Lache Seastrunk out of Baylor. 5'10" and right around 200# might a bit small for what we're looking for and he tends to run East - West on occasion.

I'm interested in finidng out more about this "small" school prospect.

    Terrance West, RB: Towson : 5-9 / 225 lbs.

Hyde and Sankey are my top two

also like Jeramy Hill quite a bit...And I definately agree that we need to draft at least one RB. I would be thrilled with any of the 3 mentioned. Got a good feeling about Sankey especially. He does it all. And he's under-rated runner between the tackles. I think he has some Emmit Smith, Darren Sproles, Doug Martin type qualities....

Ok Irish now that we?ve sufficiently beaten the QB horse are you ready to discuss what we should do at RB *WRITE*

In order for me to get a more reasonable sense of what the RB situation is I started with the players currently on the roster.

Tate, Ben ? Reportedly the ?best? FA RB this year. I am unsure how many shared my fear that Farmer would end up severely over paying for this guy to sign him, but am pleased at the reasonable size of the his contract. Should easily be a day one starter and provide a veteran presence at the position.

Lewis, Dion ? Had many of us excited about what he could do last preseason. Then he broke his leg. I see him as more of a 3rd down / situational RB, and not an every down back. I still think he will have a significant role in the offense.

Baker, Edwin - Ogbonnaya, Chris - Whittaker, Fozzy ? I think Ogbonnaya would be better suited at RB than FB so I?ve put him in this group. Ok I?ve lumped these three together for the sake of time and space. All we?ve really seen of these guys is flashes. Some good some not so good. I don?t think that any of them really is much more than a change of pace, give your starter a rest type of back, at this point. Maybe we?ll see more during training camp and preseason that will change my mind. In the end I only envision one of the three on the final roster.

Cook, Jamaine ? Cook really is the odd man out and I know very little about him. In the end I don?t see him on the final 53 man roster, maybe not even a practice squad spot.

Pressley, Chris ? With his signing it makes it look as if Shanahan will go back to some ?old School? running.

Tier 1 ? These backs could easily be a franchise workhorse and are not likely to fall past the second round.

    Carlos Hyde, OSU, 6'1", 230
? Appears to be the #1 back on many boards. Can?t say as I have much argument to that. By all appearances Hyde fits the mold of the prototypical workhorse RB. His combine #?s while not impressive are solid.

    Tre Mason, Auburn, 5'9",207
? Decisive runner though smallish in size. Good hands. Could easily see him teamed w/ fellow alum Tate as a solid 1-2 punch. IMHO the best RB of the class despite his stature. Reminds me of another small back that has terrorized the Browns and AFCN for years.

    Bishop Sankey, Washington, 5'10", 209
? Productive RB with potential to work into a featured back role. Another good all-around back that is close to a complete package.

    Ka'Deem Carey, Arizona, 5'9", 207
? Productive dual threat RB that could work into a featured back role. Smallish in size. Lacks breakaway speed.

Tier 2 ? Solid backs with potential to become the franchise work horse or be a solid #2 guy that would not limit the offense. Each has some issues(questions) here or there that may make them available in the third rounds or later.

    Jeremy Hill, LSU, 6'1", 233
? Ideal size for a feature back. Maturity Issues may keep him from going higher.

    Terrance West, Towson, 5'9", 225
? Think Tre Mason of the FCS. Responsible for half of Towson?s offense last season yds and TD?s. Not asked to catch many passes.

    Devonta Freeman , Florida State, 5'8", 206
? He is a quick back who also has some strength to him.

    Charles Sims, W Virginia, 6'0", 214
? He illustrated that he is a well-rounded back who runs well, yet can block, receive and even be able to contribute on special teams. Sims has quickness and is a physical runner. He could be a nice value pick.

    Lache Seastrunk, Baylor, 5'10", 201
? The big question around Seastrunk will be his receiving skills as he didn't have a single reception in 2013.

Tier 3- RB?s that I feel would be more of a situational role player than a featured back.

    Andre Williams, BC, 5'11", 230
? Struggled against tougher opponents lacks skills in passing game. Doesn?t appear to be a dual threat type RB more of a situational runner.

    James White, Wisconsin, 5'9", 204

? White will probably do his best work as a situational or rotational back. Has a solid all-around skill set yet I don?t think would fit into a featured back role.

Jerick McKinnon, Georgia Southern, 5'9", 209

? Probably the biggest dark horse RB in the draft. Combine #?s are off the chart. Started as an option QB moving to RB his senior season. With some time to learn the position at the next level he could end up being a steal if taken in the 5 round or later.

I haven't looked at all the RB's in the draft and it is a deep class this year. I think that there is good value to be found at the postion especially later in the draft.

    *DRINK*

If Devonta Freeman can be had for the pick that was garnered in the Steelers trade I believe it would be a solid addition to the Browns backfield and he has potential IMO to be a quality full-time NFL back.

Follow that up with James Sims if he is available in the 6th and the RB situation in CLE looks totally different than last season.

I have 5 bucks that says "someone" wearing Garnet & Gold goggles stop(pers) by pretty soon. :D

  10. Lym, I tell it like it is....no goggles on here 4 me w FSU...I told Irish last yr EJ wuldnt b a great QB in this league cause he drops off everything underneath....C. Jones will not b an effective LB unless he lines up at DE/OLB and rushes the passer....not good in the middle and Freeman can b a weapon but gets tripped up a lot when there is a hole and lacks the initial burst to explode through the hole.

That just happened to be right after I said that Manuel was the ONLY QB I would even consider in that draft...weeks before the draft actually occurred, and well, how many were taken in the first round last year?
