Re: LAOJoe & RTTRUTH's 8th Annual "OFFICIAL" Mock

Pats draft

3(8)- Chris Wormley DL Michigan- Pats have looked at him a couple times in real life. Athletic near 300lbers with scheme versatility don't grow on trees.  Seems like a Patriot type of player on the field and in the locker room.

3(32)- Ethan Pocic C LSU- This was the double snipe pick. Very frustrated I just wanted to trade out. As my head cleared and combed over trade offers. I recalled that I really liked Pocic's game.  Another big man with position versatility this side on the other side of the ball.  He'll be an instant upgrade behind Andrews at Center with the physical ability to be coached up @ other positions early in his career.

4(24)-Deashon Hall DE Texas A&M-  Went with measurable and potential on this pick. If the Pats have any true needs it would be the edges of the front 7. However I still think I drafted Hall in the right area and it wasn't a true reach.  Like I said he has the physical attributes of an NFL 43 DE, combined with that he seems to go hard on every play I watched on tape.  Good coaching could create a double digit sack guy.  Real Pats have also shown some interest

5(19)- Jonnu Smith TE FIU- Dwayne Allen was a good pick up for the Pats. Still, Gronks back is one hit away disaster and Allen has had his injury issues as well.  Smith had a hell of a combine and is an ultra athletic guy for close to 250lbs.  Should be a real nice move TE, not the best blocker but he seems to at least put the effort in.

5(32)- Harvey Langi LB BYU- Pats need depth and talent at LB after trading Collins away during the 2016 regular season.  It was essential to hold on to Hightower, still they need to fill a little more youthful athleticism around him.  Langi had a much better 2015 then 2016 for some reason BYU had him out of position all year.  The Pats coaching staff may be a little smarter than the Cougars if I was to guess and will move him back to LB in the pros, where he can roam sideline to sideline and make plays.  This may happen in real life as it's been reported that Belichick likes this kid.

6(6)- Brad Seaton OT Villanova- One more year left on Nate Solders deal, so it isn't a bad idea to bring in a developmental tackle at this point in the draft.  They could use a little depth at the position right now as well. Seaton has good Offensive Tackle traits and has been scouted by the Patriots a couple times during the draft process.

7(21)- Brandon Wilson CB Houston-Looking for late round gems at this point. The real Pats are pretty good at it.  Wilson crushed his pro day running sub 4.4 forty.  Butler signed his tender and hopefully will be around for a championship run this year before he cashed in big next offseason.  If it's Butler/Gilmore at CB that's pretty good. However the drop off after those is pretty significant and Wilson could have an opportunity to compete for the nickel corner and overall depth at the position.  Has played a little bit of RB also and we know how old Billy boy loves that stuff.

UDFA(1)- Sean Harlow OL Oregon St- Like Underdog said on the thread, a legacy pick.  I didn't only pick him because his Dad was a Patriot twenty some odd years ago. I also think he has traits to develop into a decent OG and even possibly a swing tackle with some work.

UDFA(2)- Chris Carson RB Oklahoma St- I was looking for a big back all draft.  I didn't say it at the time but I really covet Foreman, I just think he's going to be a stud at the NFL level. I even almost chimed in that Mixon wasn't even close to the best back coming out of the Big 12 but things were getting heated at that point and I wasn't in the mood to instigate(this time) Anyway back to Carson.  If the Bills allow the Pats to sign away Gillespie then this would be an even better move, stick the kid on the practice squad and let him develop. He's big and he doesn't fumble.  Bill likes those things.

COLTS Draft

Our Top 3 Priorities

Impact Defenders for 2018 and Beyond
Dynamic Runningback to Pair with Luck
Improve Competition @ Interior OL and/or WR

2 (2) Jarrad Davis, ILB - Florida
2(14) Dorian Johnson, OG - Pittsburgh
3(16) Blair Brown, ILB - Ohio
4 (2) Elijah Qualls, NT - Washington
4(14) Marlon Mack, RB - South Florida
4(30) Damontae Kazee, CB - San Diego State
4(37) John Johnson, FS - Boston College
5 (2) James Conner, RB - Pittsburgh
5(23) Ejuan Price, OLB - Pittsburgh
7 (9) Eric Saubert, TE - Drake
7(33) Stacy Coley, WR - Miami
UDFA Des Lawrence, CB - North Carolina
UDFA Corey Levin, OG - Chattanooga

Recap: Defense was my focus. I had a plan going in to find extra picks somewhere and get players that can vault our defense to the top 15 by the year 2018. I had a tough time getting good value back in my trades. That said, in a deep draft I did improve my position in the 5th round and gain two 4th's moving back from 15 to 34. And even at 15 Jarrad Davis was a top 3 name on my board. It was between Davis, Humphrey, and Charles Harris. So to gain picks and land Davis was a win for me, even if it wasn't obvious. Also added two more picks between trade-backs in the 5th and 6th.

I love landing Davis, Dorian Johnson, Qualls, and John Johnson where I did. Truth be told, we are likely still a draft away from Superbowl contention. But that was a reality I knew would exist going into the draft. Just not enough picks to fix what Grigson left us. If I knock myself for anything it's not adding a more immediate force at OLB. But at the same time I applaud myself for staying true to my board and not reaching for guys I felt should go one round lower than where I found myself picking. I don't think I ever had a chance at feeling 100% satisfied with this draft. Too many holes on the roster. BUT....

Overall Qualls, Davis, Brown, and Johnson give us a solid foundation going forward up the middle of the defense. Dorian Johnson at LG and the combo of Mack and Conner should help this offense find the balance it needs based on week-to-week opponents.

RAMS Draft

Our Top 3 Priorities

Help our Young QB Succeed
Physical NFC West Capable 3-4 Defenders
Swing for Upside at CB/DL/OL

Draft Recap: My main goals for the Rams were to find a center of the future to pair with young signal-caller Jared Goff, as well as adding receiving threats around him. I really like the athleticism of Orlosky's game. He gets to the spot quick and leverages well. They signed John Sullivan as an FA, so Orlosky can play backup year one while he adds overall strength to his core and refines his game. Adding Zay Jones, Trent Taylor, and Elijah McGuire ideally gives Goff a big weapon for the redzone, a quick reliable chain-mover who runs excellent routes, and a decent receiving or running option to spell Gurley for a whole 8-10 plays per game. (3rd to Gurley and FA Lance Dunbar)

My secondary goal was to add muscle to a defense with a few weapons that is not only playing in a very physical division, but also transitioning to a 3-4 under new DC Wade Phillips. I swung for upside later on with Lorenzo Jerome, Bryan Cox Jr. and Ezra Robinson. Two of them were turnover machines in college. Hopefully at least one surprises in camp and steals a starting gig going forward. If I were to criticize myself in this effort it would be that one could argue I got no guaranteed impact players on defense. That said, there's a lot of upside and physicality among this group. I feel like if even half of them pay dividends at least one will hit big and there will be another couple solid special teamers in the group. After criticism comes praise.
In hindsight I think my favorite part of this draft is that without having a first round pick (lost in the Goff trade in 2016), I still managed to come away with 9 selections this year, AND traded for future value, adding a 2018 3rd rounder (ARZ) and 6th rounder (OAK). It gives the Rams added ammo going forward.

2 (5) Zay Jones, WR - Eastern Washington
3(17) Tyler Orlosky, C - West Virginia
4(35) Eddie Vanderdoes, DL - UCLA
5 (5) Tanzel Smart, DL - Tulane
5(11) Connor Harris, ILB - Lindenwood
5(35) Lorenzo Jerome, SS - Saint Francis (PA)
6 (9) Elijah McGuire, RB - Louisiana-Lafayette
6(13) Ezra Robinson, CB - Tennessee State
7(16) Bryan Cox Jr., OLB - Florida
UDFA Brandon Bell, ILB - Penn State
UDFA Trent Taylor, WR - Louisiana Tech
*2018 3rd (ARZ)
*2018 6th (OAK)
